Also, who is the front runner for ROY atm? Barnes or Mobley? I can see Cade making a run for it. His team sucking won't help but he'll be able to put up numbers. Franz probably has an outside shot too.
Mobley is the betting favorite (Even) with Barnes (+250) second. Which seems right, Mobley should be the odds on favorite.

Sixers beating up on the Spurs, as most NBA teams other than Boston tend to do these days.

Lakers were up 19 with 7 to go in the 2Q…..it’s now a 3-pt game at the half. 3-pt shooting variance makes 20-pt comebacks more the norm than ever before. It’s a 7-possession game…..that’s like 2:30 of game time.

Lakers finish it 134-118 with one of the shortest starting lineups in recent memory, LeBron at center against Capela and John Collins, 6’9”, 6’6”, 6’3”, 6’3”, 6’3”.

Giannis the best player in Brooklyn's easy win over Milwaukee (and Durant played really well). 31-7-9 in 26 minutes; just cruising through Brooklyn, who has no answer for him.

It's the passing that really has taken him to the next level. He recognizes the weight he throws at defenses who are frantically organzing to build a wall to stop him and is making quicker and quicker decisions to get good shots for his teammates.

This is the kind of decion-making the Jays need to make to take the Celtics to another level. Giannis understands that when he gets the ball in this position, defenders will naturally cheat towards the paint to stop him from attacking the basket. Without even really thinking, he insticatively passes it to Nwora, who is open because Harden has already started to drift into the paint to help on the drive. He doesn't even have to think for a second what decision to make; he just KNOWS.

I've always assumed it was because Monk wanted to play with LeBron, one of his idols, and so was willing to take a huge pay cut.

This would be normal for a veteran on the backside of his career curve. Has there been a player coming off his rookie deal who has built himself a fairly defined role in this league to sign a league min contract (or close to one)?

Since he’s been inserted into the starting lineup next to LeBron he’s avg 22ppg on 48% 3-pt shooting. Granted, his last two big games have some against playground level defense….that Hawks team barely competes at that end right now on top of being physically challenged at the guard positions.

I thought there wasn't that much interest either? It was only a 1 year deal with the Lakers so it's going to workout to his benefit. He's a flawed player and will never be great defensively due to physical limitations, but the dude can score.

Last 7 games: 34.4 mpg, .563/.482/.900, 21.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.9 steals.

This will all work out really well for Monk.

Somewhere
One reason why Monk signed with the Lakers has to be that he saw their roster and knew he’d get opportunities to play. Long run, that might make him more money.

I believe this is correct in that there wasn’t interest for the deal his agent was looking for at the time. Schroder wasn’t the only guy who got caught up in the FA squeeze. It happens to guys every summer but the Lakers got a steal.

Likely what the GMs who passed on him focused was his defense, or lack thereof. Monk was a real negative for the Hornets on D, and I think was seen just as a good 3 point shooter who'd hurt more than help. But this year he's active and pretty effective for the Lakers on defense (backed up by, say, RAPTOR defensive stats) even if obviously he can still be bullied by some guys. Maybe that's just a contract hustle now that he sees what he needs to do to get paid. The other thing about Monk is he's very well rounded on offense, way more than I would have expected -- not just a 3 point shooter, but can score from 3 levels and has good handles, too. He and LBJ play the 2-man game very effectively.

I don’t catch the Lakers very often, or Hornets for that matter, but I wonder how much of Monks performance this year is about demonstrating existing skills vs having those existing or latent skills develop further playing with Lebron. I’m sure the answer is a little column A and a little column B, but in my mind it’s further evidence that the Js should be playing and developing with a play maker beyond Marcus’s skills: proper ball movement can be contagious.

Monk is another Rozier type exception, so if you want to hold out hope on RL and AN, there's that.
Monk and Rozier are athletic, explosive highlight reel guys who can shoot……neither RL or AN have this skillset. They can still develop what it is they have, although I don’t feel AN will, but they won’t ever play like Monk and Rozier.

Klay Thompson with 17 points in just under 20 minutes in Dubs win over Cleveland at home. SRN should do the deep dive but Klay even dunked.

I just love watching Cade play. Something about his smooth glide, the way he's under control even if he's not an explosive Westbrook type gives me confidence he'll end up being one of the top 2 players from the last draft.

This is a current chart of "Estimated Plus-Minus". I haven't looked at the results in detail - they may be garbage. But regardless, check the picture out and see if you can guess who rates the lowest using this metric - the hint is simply the fact I am posting this in this forum.

Semi! and at ~18 minutes per game at minus 7.9, he is lapping the rest of the players around him by playing about 3X as much while being considerably worse using this measure...

I was saying last year that he’s such a complete player without any holes in his game. Plus to great at everything with the sole exception of lacking explosiveness. His BBIQ and competitiveness defensively offsets the one area he is mediocre. Mobley is fantastic too but Cade has plenty of time to overtake him for ROY and (wrong thread but…) is over +400 to win the award.

IIRC, Estimated Plus-Minus is a well-respected metric, if not as accurate as Bowiac’s metric (unless it *is* Bowiac’s metric?)

That’s Jokic at the top, followed by a trio of Steph, LeBron, and Giannis. Seems to check out.

It loves my offseason "Jarrett Allen is good" take, he's 7th.

Watching the Warriors run an offense is wicked fun. Cuts and running the offense around the foul line.

It doesn't appear to be rocket science, so I don't know why the Celtics can't run some of these plays.

I mean, the Warriors bench runs them, not just the starters.

I agree with your sentiment but Steph Curry and, to a lesser extent, Draymond Green makes what the Warriors do look easy. If you watched parts of last year and/or the season prior, they were just as bad and often worse than Boston.

Talent is everything. And if you the Warriors who have a lot of rotation talent in addition to their top end players, the results are this style of hooping.

Yeah why can’t Smart and Grant Williams do what Curry and Draymond can…….aside from the enormous different in skill levels.
