Still blown away that Liverpool didn't draw Pep Guardiola's 2010-2011 Barca squad. I thought they were contractually obligated to play top teams in early rounds.

Maybe Sepp Van Den Berg can beat LFC with a header. Apparently, the team has agreed he can play despite being on loan.

that was a really strong City squad that lost to West Ham...I'd be worried esp since Liverpool and Chelsea have remained strong early on this season

Mahrez and Sterling have been so off form that any match they start is liable to end without a goal. City also had 25 shots and 23 chances.
I agree though that not getting a striker may cost City like this 4 or 5 times this season and that could be the difference in a title race. Glad it happened in the cup and not a league match.

it just feels like Pep has been grooming Foden to take that striker spot for a while now

The next round draw was this morning

Liverpool vs Leicester
Spurs vs West Ham
Arsenal vs Sunderland
Brentford vs Chelsea

Its getting to the round where more first 11 are involved. I always wonder about this sort of thing … does Brendan Rogers ring up Klopp and they agree on a gentleman’s agreement ? Klopp has kind of insinuated he was still going to play the kids

Entertaining start between Leicester and Liverpool. 2 quick Vardy goals followed by an Oxlade Chamberlain goal. The Koumetio-Gomez CB combo looked slow and lethargic on the first two goals.

Leicester up 3-1 on Liverpool.
Spurs up 2-1 on West Ham.
Chelsea and Brentford are 0-0.

If Liverpool hadn’t started Koumetio, they’d probably be winning. Not sure what happened there. The guy has been out of mind for nearly a year. Lots of pressure but Liverpool can’t seem to tie it up.

California. Duh.
I can't believe they are still doing a 2 legged tie for the semis.

Also, why in the hell didn't Vardy take a penalty?

That is odd. Bertrand took his second of his career (now 1 for 2) while Vardy had taken 34 (making 28).

Luke Thomas took his first non youth league penalty too (was 2-for-4 as a youth).

Liverpool have requested that the Arsenal first leg semi-final on Thursday be postponed.

It seems like a somewhat borderline request that is motivated more by injuries, fixture congestion, and AFCON than a truly high number of Covid cases. They had three reported and now say there are new ones but clubs have definitely played before with 4-5 cases in the squad.

As has been the case throughout, the fact that there is no clear policy on when a request is granted is just totally insane.

It would seem a bit crazy to cancel this match but then have Liverpool's FA Cup match on Sunday go ahead, as surely their player availability will not be much different. But if both matches are postponed, I don't know how Liverpool would get them in. There is basically one available mid-week spot (around Jan 18/19) when both Liverpool and Arsenal could reschedule this match. But that would leave Liverpool without any available spot midweek or on a weekend to reschedule their FA Cup 3rd round match prior to the 4th round. So it seems to me that if the League Cup match does get cancelled, it will involve Liverpool then playing in the FA Cup a few days later with much the same squad or perhaps with 1-2 of the players back who tested positive late last week.

Play both semi matchups 1 leg at fuckin Wembley and move on to the final. And if Liverpool can't field a senior team for Thursday, that's their problem. Field your kids. This competition doesn't mean anything, just get the fixtures over with.

With all of these postponements, it would be a welcomed change if there were some changes to league rules re squads. The return to 5 subs would be a start, but also just some recognition that you can either have (A) the best players play only so often, or (B) significantly increase their rates of injury, in which case you've ruined goal (A).

No indication yet that any other Liverpool player has actually tested positive, only the assistant coach.

I understand trying to make these decisions early out of respect to match-going fans, especially those planning to travel. But unless I've missed something they're postponing the match with only three Liverpool players currently confirmed as positive Covid cases. Arsenal and many other clubs have carried an average of 2-3 Covid cases at a time for nearly a month now.

It's OK - Liverpool will use a COVID test from the kitman to get all of its games put off while Salah and Mane are at AFCON.

There's zero consistency. The melodramatic move of announcing the closure of the first-team training facility seems to have pushed it over the line.

The 'solution' is mutually destructive anyway given there are still going to be two legs, so fixture congestion will be exacerbated.

1st leg now at Anfield on Jan 13. 2nd leg now at Emirates Jan 20.

Other games on the 9th (Shrewbury), the 16th (Brentford) and the 23rd (Crystal Palace).

Universal reaction from rival fans (sorry couldn't resist when I saw this on Twitter).

The babies in this scenario would be the club crying for postponements when they have enough players to field a team but okay
