In the "boom goes the dynamite" video, at one point the kid goes "...oh no." This is like that transformed into soccer.

That's hilariously evil, but I think the headline overstates it a bit -- the article says Mexico is seeking clarification from FIFA as the sanction didn't specify that the matches had to be men's games. Since the second match scheduled to be hosted is a women''s match, Mexico could technically be accused of not complying with the sanction if they sold tickets to that match.

Out-of-favor Columbus forward Kevin Molino struck first for the Soca Warriors, but French Guiana ties it at 1-1 right before halftime in what I’m sure is the most compelling international match happening now.

Melrose’s own Frantzdy Pierrot has scored a first half hat trick for Haiti! They lead 3-0.

Guadalupe leads!
Guatemala quickly equalized and now we’re going directly to a shootout after 90’.

This could be a pretty big upset. Guatemala doesn’t really belong in the play-in, but FIFA essentially gave them the death penalty and they’re more or less starting from scratch in Concacaf’s eyes.

I think Guatemala might have wound up in a play-in anyway. They only qualified for two of the four Gold Cups prior to their suspension — and Central America got five slots! Once they finished behind Nicaragua, another time they finished behind Belize.

They started a guy who plays in NISA in this game. Not a great indicator!

Wow, I didn’t realize their qualification record was that poor, although the tournament has recently grown from 12 to 15 Concacaf nations (plus Qatar). They’ve also missed the hex more times than I realized, despite this thread’s namesake holding a record for World Cup qualifying goals.

Looking at the clubs of some of the team in the qualification groups is a fun exercise. Cuba has a player in the Sanmarinese league. Guyana has two on Bournemouth FC (in the English ninth tier, not be confused with the better known AFC Bournemouth) as well as a community college player.

FAS and Forge are playing the second leg of their Scotiabank Concacaf League preliminary round tie. Forge couldn’t play their home match in Canada, so their home leg was played in El Salvador. The away goals rule still applies though. So far we’ve had a power outage and a weather delay and the playing surface is still pretty waterlogged.

Tata is freezing out Chucky Lozano for some reason. Also, apparently Tata clearly didn’t have to promise David Ochoa a roster spot.

Edit: no Hector Herrera either
as one of 4 keepers. Good luck with that!

Sounds like Jimenez, Corona, & Lozano weren’t released by their clubs. The former 2 die to COVID quarantine rules and Chucky because he’s just fresh back from that horrific looking neck injury. Napoli want to keep him in training with their physios.

Mexican commentators say Lozano and Herrera weren't available due to injury recovery (also I bet Herrera would have been blocked by his club anyway).

Big break for Mexico is that Jamaica is hit way harder by the lack of releases for Bailey, Antonio and Gray

I think it was because of a friendly, but you're right, and I haven't been able to figure out yet why there are people there. WTF?

Ah, just found it - FIFA reduced it to one game. Awesome. Fitting that they did it again tonight.

I read somewhere on Twitter that in the history of the Hex/Ocho, Canada have just become the first team to get points at the US and at Mexico in the same cycle. Canada won't be thrilled by their home draw against El Salvador in September, but they've made up the two points they "lost" by getting two points they "weren't supposed to get". And Canada's position, along with the position of the other teams at the top, has been strengthened by the multitude of draws, which lower the point threshold for qualification.

Welp!

Congrats to Canada on a 4-1 drubbing of Panama. Seems key mistakes let the game get out of hand.

Was not expecting this (not so confident that I thought they coukd actually win even though they led at the half but at least a respectable result).

Let's see what Christiansen does now.

Yeah, it was a fairly dominant performance by the Canadians (words never said before this year!), and better for them going forward that they had to come from behind to get it. I'm sure Panama can and will be better, but they looked slow, and coughed up possession repeatedly. Canada also had 2 good shouts for penalties turned down.
I'm definitely hopeful for this Canadian side. I think they can do it, but must continue to get draws on the road while winning their home games- easier said than done. I've heard about windy nights in Stoke, but what about a sweltering day in San Sula?

Both Canada matches in the next window will be at home, so they don’t have to go on the road until January 2022. Six points could take a lot of pressure off for those road games.

Canada already announced the November qualifiers will be played in Commonwealth Stadium. What do they usually say about snowy nights in Edmonton?

I love to give Gregg shit, mainly cause it's easy to give him shit. Realistically though the US are a showing against Panana away from a great first 6 games out despite the adversity. The bigger problem for the US is the midfield teams are also putting up some points as well with everyone having at least 2 draws. Canada has done well to get on 10 points ditto Panama on 8 when they've both played US and Mexico and each other.

If you look at the points per game the US just being under 2 is fine. That would extrapolate out to about 25 points. Which would make it hard to end up on the outside of the Top 3. But there's still 2 matches with Mexico at a time when they cannot take their foot off the gas. I think after November window we would have a clearer picture where everyone stands.

Costa Rica has Honduras and @Canada
Panama has El Salvador and @Honduras
Canada has Costa Rica and Mexico
US of course has Mexico and @Jamaica
Mexico @US and @Canada

I think there is a chance Panama is ahead of Canada after the window as I can easily see them pulling 4/6 points home to El Salvador and at San Pedro Sula but if they don't get at least 4 their top 3 chances take a huge hit as they would still have road games at US and Mexico in the new year. 4 or 6 for them though would certainly make for some interesting holiday headlines.

Mexico has a chance to put some real pressure on the US and/or Canada with a road win or 2. Canada and US really need points from Jamaica and Costa Rica, Costa Rica looked disinterested last night, but then again they keep getting results from the bottom of the table so they are a decent mid table team.

With 4 teams 3 points apart for a playoff spot, each game is important from hear out. About the only team that I think is pretty doomed is Honduras, but if they beat Panama at home well then they are vaulted right back into the mixer.

Is it too early to start looking ahead to 2022 Champions League? I didn’t realize this, but the current season Mexican champions and runners-up qualify for the 2023 edition, so we already know the four Liga MX participants. Stunningly, neither Super Classico side qualified, nor did the Monterrey clubs, who have recently dominated the tournament.

As we all know, the Revolution are the last MLS club to win a continental tournament, but 2022 seems to be our best chance in a long time.

Another ticket punched for Champions League. Forge FC came back from a 1-3 hole to win the tie 4-3 to become the first CPL team to qualify! I hope the Revs draw them, because Hamilton is a much easier road trip than pretty much anywhere else.

The Mexican team apparently asked to use the same facility tonight. The facility, allegedly—I don't have an official source on this—told them to stick it, because there are local youth leagues scheduled to play. Viva la CONCACAF!

Full thread at the link, but Canada moved their practice indoors because of the snow, and took photos with the prime minister... then denied usage of the facility to Mexico.

Also, it looks like Edmonton may be getting up to 10in of snow. I'm almost more excited to see how this plays out than USA-Jamaica.

Playing a game in Edmonton in the middle of November is pure CONCACAF shenanigans. Since it is happening to Mexico, I choose to just laugh.

The weird aspect of this is that Canada is probably good enough to aim for the full three points at home. The conditions probably favor a stalemate and a happy single away point for Mexico. The CanMNT might be better off using the plus-size CFL pitch and allowing their talented players like Davies, David, or Tajon to show off their skill.

They're going to have Shoresy from Letterkenny chirp at the Mexican team over the PA system at this rate.

This is a point that's being undersaid in the understandable delight at the ridiculousness of it all. It seems like this all makes it harder for Canada's fast and incredibly talented guys to run at Mexico's depleted backline.

Quoted for truth. Was kind of hoping for cold , but otherwise good weather. Davies and Buchanan can run these guys ragged - bad weather levels the advantage.

No 15 for Canada is a shithouse artist supreme. Flattened El Tri winger and perpetual Everton target Hirving Lozano with a shoulder to the temple, and then just leg whipped some other dude. That’s got hurt when you’re playing on a goddamn glacier.
