Felger and Mazz - Creating False Naratives one day at a time

It’s actually kinda funny, I just tuned in for laughs and we’re at the thirty minute mark when Felger goes ‘AHH, let’s get to their issues, they have them.’ Maybe I missed it, but I expected him to play it something like ‘BLEHHHH Felger was wrong, Chaim Bloom and the NERDS are right, Felger is wrong BLEHHHHH. Let’s move on.’

They just aren’t about providing a platform, even for just a day, for listeners to enjoy a huge win. Ironically, their formula is similar to what they decry with sports teams, namely they’ll never do anything that doesn’t maximize profitability like some kind of soulless robot, in their case by attracting their listeners and callers through negativity and snark.

Mazz is a legitimate baseball guy (Felger clearly does not care about baseball), but you can just feel he’s shackled when on F and M because he actually knows baseball but I suspect he feels he can’t really voice his thoughts in an unvarnished way without sacrificing needed hot takes.

Felger is an incubus with his co-hosts, he sucks them dry until they're husks. He did it with Bertrand, he did it was Mazz and Murray is devoid of any original or interesting thought, so it doesn't matter with that dunce. I rarely listen to sports radio but I heard a bit of the Baseball Show last night and Mazz sounded down-right giddy talking about the game. I haven't heard him that excited in years. When he's free of Felger, Mazz isn't too bad on baseball. But when he's paired up with Felger, the same old takes come out.

Felger is predictably negative. You shouldn't listen.

The Baseball Hour is by and large a good hour of radio every night. Mazz is much better on there than he is on F&M. Murray is less terrible, but when Matt McCarthy is on there he adds a lot. He is a hot take artist at points, but he is clearly passionate about the sport and loves the Red Sox. Between that, The Hockey Show, and the Over/Under Show there is some good radio.

I got youtube TV so I could watch this series and the next and figured I'd tune in to see what they had to say. They STARTED the show talking about how lucky the Sox were, how TB gifted them the game last night, and how unclutch the Sox were late in the game. I get that they don't need to wave pom poms but Jesus. That this is the #1 rated show in Boston by far is embarrassing.

Their behavior reminded me of Dennis and Callahan back in 2004. I'll never forget the morning after the Sox beat the Yankees in the ALCS. The biggest Sox win of my lifetime at the time. Of probably their lifetime too. Instead of celebrating they were bitching and moaning about how Francona put Pedro in the game for an inning.

Oh, and also this week:

Chris Gaspar: Anyone who portrays anything in a positive light about the Patriots, like Mike Reiss, is biased and has an agenda.

Chris Gaspar: Listen to my unbiased takes about how JAG Jones sucks

Amazing.

Gasper’s stance on Mac is so ridiculous. He decided before the draft that he is a JAG and won’t accept anything to the contrary. He’s usually very good, but on this topic he’s insufferable

If there was a team in the league that I would have put money on to draft a qb it was definitely Denver. To this day I’m amazed they passed

Have you listened to him recently ? Not being a dick but he's made a billion comments about how he regrets "JAG Jones " and wishes he never said that.

He's also said several times he thinks Jones' ceiling is Kurt Cousins, who is a 2x pro bowler.

Yes, he said, "I should have called him good-but-not-elite" Jones, citing Cousins as a comp. Which frankly is not much of a distinction from JAG given all the ensuing "discussion".

He's take-committed and shouldn't be let off the hook on this one. He is an unabashed Brady fanboy (like many), but that doesn't make his stance on Jones any less irritating.

"I wish I hadn't said JAG Jones. Not because I didn't mean it, but because it is an easy way to encapsulate how against him I am from before he played a snap in the NFL."

"Now excuse me while I cherry pick stats to show you why he's the worst QB in the league."

Felger and "Jim was right again" Murray going to be eating some crow today.

Just kidding, they'll just move the goalposts again.

Did he have a point or was it dinosaur non-sense? I've found the MLB playoff games to be extremely accessible and I recently pared down my TV-related packages all the way down to like 60 a month. Sling blue, netflix only etc. I see every game easily.

Didn't hear the rant, but it's because the Bruins are exclusively on ESPN+ tonight so if he wants to watch it, he has to subscribe. It is the most predicable Felger rant ever. He's always outraged by technology and social media. He hates doing anythmg more than turning the TV on to find a game (he may not necessarily be wrong with this take).

Yeah but who wants to pay for ESPN+? (or anything ESPN for that matter - they're already a huge slice of your bill if you get cable, and they get strong armed into being a bottom tier network so if you want cable at all they're getting paid)

The Bruins being on ESPN+ is what brought it up today, but he has been holding it in since he tried to order the Fury/Wilder fight two weeks ago. He says it took him 45 minutes to figure out how to subscribe to ESPN+ and order the fight. Kept being prompted to enter a username and password, but he entered the wrong password and had to reset his password. Misses the days when you could call a phone number and order a fight.

“Just tell me the game is on channel 49 and I’ll pay for it, but don’t have me create a username and password, then I have to reset my password to watch the game because I can’t remember all these stupid passwords.”

"The game has gotten past Belichick! He's too old! He has to adapt for the modern game but has failed to do so! Are you really comfortable with such an old dinosaur who can't understand the current way the game is playing coaching your team, caller?!"

"Learning how to download the ESPN+ app on my Roku and entering my credit card number is too hard!"

Announced at the end of today's show that Billy Lanni is leaving as of Friday.

Bummer, dude is spot on Masshole fan. He's had some brilliant unapologetic takes during his run that started at day one of 98.5.

You mean in addition to being on network TV or as the only way to see the games? I highly doubt they ever make it exclusively that way; it immediately shrinks the audience massively and there could be massive pirating of it.

NFL just signed an 11 year $113b tv deal and is the most watched content on tv every week. No chance they're giving that up to try to sell to people individually.

It won't be exclusive, but I agree somewhat in that some aspects of the season are going to be PPV/subscription based.

I had it on for about 20 minutes. The Patriots had their biggest win in 2 seaosons, firmly placed themselves in playoff contention, and these guys had their pants off over Bill's "That was my fault" comment about the holding challenge. They just ran that sound byte over and over.

Did they offer an alternative as to what he was "supposed" to say?

No. They basically said it was a bunch of BS and he was just covering for someone on the staff (likely Patricia) and that if it was actually his fault he'd never admit to it.

Then they giggled and made up statements like "Bill, there were a million good receivers in the draft and you chose N'Keal Harry?" and then run the sound bye of the "Yeah, that was my fault" over and over.

Stuff like this is why Boston sportstalk (and a lot of the media) is a wasteland... but people keep lapping it up or hate listening...

Flipped on this show for 2 minutes to hear Felger and Mazz focusing their segment on the fact that the Pats are NOT playing "mistake free football" or something. I don't know why I even bothered. (Click.)

In fairness to them, it's a fair criticism. They have been sloppy even during this winning streak. Turnovers, bad penalties, etc.

It's a reasonable take. I mean, the committed 3 false starts and 3 delay of games yesterday. They had to burn timeouts for operational mistakes against the Chargers. They have won 3 straight but there have been mistakes.

Also, both Felger and Mazz have opened by saying they're starting to believe the Patriots are on to something. Felger is wondering if they'll get a home playoff game now. Mazz is more curmudgeony saying his faith in Bill has been restored.

Murray is the turd todaty, as per normal. Boy does he suck.

Murray is an irredeemable piece of garbage that brings nothing to the table. They really need almost a fanboy type that will push back against Felger and Mazz' negativity, almost like Beetle was when he was in that position. Having someone like Murray there just makes the show a pit of negativity that isn't worth listening to.

Assuming that is because of the play where Mac grabbed the guys ankle is “similar” to the dirty plays Grayson has done in the past. Just a guess though
That makes sense. It's also pretty fucking dumb, but that's Jim "the toughest guy in any room -- but also sensitive enough that he needs to wear sunglasses in that same room because the lights are too bright and they hurt my widdle baby eyes" Murray.

Murray sucks because he isn't even funny. I don't know what purpose he serves. Maybe you could insert him in a show that had two hosts who were all sunshine and rainbows all the time, but even then he'd just be a dick and bring nothing to the table.

They couldn't wait to agree with Bedard last week that Mac Jones had plateaued...let's see what they say about that this week.

I’m guessing it’ll be four hours of goal post moving, and trashing the opposition. SOP for these guys. “The Browns are a joke of an organization, wait until the play a real team”, followed by cherry picked examples of how a better team will take advantage of Mac’s mistakes that he got lucky on because the Browns are a joke.

where I was last at
Mini hijack only because this is sort of the de facto sports talk radio thread

Steve "Schmoozer" Sommers, a FAN regular since day 1 (generally the overnites and non-prime time) is hanging up the mike after almost 35 years (sounds like he was forced out) is doing his last hour now on WFAN.

He was a one of a kind corny funny verbose poet of the FAN, with elaborate show opens. He seemed a very decent human being.

In his last hour Jerry Seinfeld, Bernie Williams , Mike Francesa and several other guests called in to give him kudos for a career well spent.

I don't listen much to F&M but often watch the evening show that he does with Michael Holley and I must say that I find that, on that show anyway, Felger has an entertaining, interesting and non-homer approach to commentary that I appreciate. He's willing to praise the Pats. He might dismiss yesterday's game as one in which the opposite team just didn't show up, but he'll give Mac the praise he deserves for a very good game.
