Like I said in my post as a rule I agree, so not sure why you think there's a debate. No doubt Kyrie had an obsessiveness to him in developing his b-ball skills, as well, even if I still would doubt that he's currently "monomaniacal" about basketball given the rabbit holes he goes down and his general desire to take off from the game regularly.

But, in any case, I'm not in his head and don't really much care.

No, we need to change this attitude that getting a shot is caving - this is the kind of thinking that has caused people who've staked out a public anti-vax position to be stuck. And this is part of why mandates are helpful - it gives people a face-saving way to change their actions without having to say they changed their minds ("I didn't want to get the shot, and still don't want to, but I had to if I wanted to do my job.") We should celebrate if Kyrie changes his mind for whatever reason, not call him attention-seeking.
Moving to V&N, because I think that's a better place for my response.

That same BallSack Sports (wont link bogus info) is now saying he has informed the Nets that he will retire.

He is a dick to everyone and will never change. He isn't unique in that aspect, but man, I am having trouble finding a comparable player in any sport.
Didn’t someone on this board have a run in with Kyrie that confirmed he was a complete asshat? I feel like it had something to do with Duke too

Why doesnt Brooklyn just trade Kyrie to a state with no requirement? The team seems good enough to work around that and it would eliminate the distraction
Who would want him? Yeah he’s great when he decides he feels like playing, but he has been a major distraction everywhere he goes.

Im sure theyve tried or are in the process or trying to move him. But as others have noted, who wants to deal with him?

If it isnt vaccination, it'll be something else.

I dread Kyrie BUT I recently played golf with the Producer (my best friend growing up) and the Director for NBA2K. They said hands down Kyrie was one of the best players to work with. Didn't show up with his agent, manager or pals. Worked hard, wanted to get it right, comfortable reading lines, stayed longer than scheduled, and was easy to work with. Dame Lilliard was also great to work with.

They had the opposite experience with many other players. My best friend negotiates the day rate and some of the nonsense that goes down with their agents/mgrs is astonishing

The personalities that celebrities project to the media can be very different than the ones that they project to their teammates and co-workers, which, in turn, can be very different than their actual interpersonal skills. One of the Celtics assistants had nothing but good things to say about Kyrie.

I honestly don't care all that much about Kyrie one way or another, except for this one vaccine issue that he is fighting. Given his stance, I hope he loses badly in his fight for his "personal freedom".

Nah.

As someone with mental health issues who has studied other mental health issues, this seems like a much more simple case of a guy who is an asshole being an asshole and having the money to afford continuing his asshole behavior.

He's not depressed, he's not bi-polar, he's not schizophrenic; he's a dumb person doing dumb things and being enabled because he's talented at something and has money.

Sigh. I have no clue if Kyrie Irving has mental health issues or not and neither do you unless you actually know Kyrie Irving.

Besides that, narcissistic personality disorder is a mental illness.

Google Search has this definition:

Narcissistic personality disorder — one of several types of personality disorders — is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy.

How many times have people in this very thread have said this about Kyrie basically verbatim?

Do people really believe everything SAS says? They could get a lot more than a box of cookies for him right now. As much as we like to talk about how much of a PIA Kyrie is, there are teams in need that would be happy to take a chance on his talent...or swapping headaches for a fresh start at least.

They're laying the groundwork and allowing Kyrie to force their hand. The ball is in his court.

This guy is unbelievable.
“Multiple sources with direct knowledge of Irving’s decision have told The Athletic that Irving is not anti-vaccine and that his stance is that he is upset that people are losing their jobs due to vaccine mandates. It’s a stance that Irving has explained to close teammates. To him, this is about a grander fight than the one on the court and Irving is challenging a perceived control of society and people’s livelihood, according to sources with knowledge of Irving’s mindset. It is a decision that he believes he is capable to make given his current life dynamics. “Kyrie wants to be a voice for the voiceless,” one source said.”

“The Nets have preached “sacrifice” across the roster this season as the franchise pursues a title run, and that has extended off the court with the vaccine. Both Kevin Durant and James Harden received the first vaccine shot in the lead up to training camp, understanding the New York City requirements, and expected Irving to do the same. Ultimately, the Nets did not want to deal with the distraction of Irving being a part-time player and wanted him to fully commit to the team — or stay away. The organization made the decision also based on the fact that Irving is the only member of their Tier 1 personnel (players, coaches, top front office officials) not to be vaccinated, thus prioritizing safety of a fully-vaccinated group.”

“Rival teams believe the Nets would be open to a significant trade offer for Irving, but his openness to playing for other franchises is unclear. Irving will be fully eligible in all markets except New York City and San Francisco. Brooklyn is on a championship chase, wanting the commitment of every player on their roster, now dealing with the cloud of uncertainty regarding a member of its big three.”

The vaccine has been available to the general public for, what, six months now? And in more controlled circulation for 10+ months, almost a year. As far as I'm aware, the vaccine mandates are a relatively new thing, outside of specific circumstances and professions. So, he really fucking cannot frame his refusal to get vaccinated over the course of the last six months as some sort of protest move against things that have only existed for a fraction of that time.

Also, it strikes me as really dumb to frame vaccination as a "sacrifice." It is literally a free thing that dramatically reduces your chance at suffering, dying, or causing other people to suffer and/or die. There ain't nothing sacrificial about it.

Hilarious. The people who are anti-vaccine mandate are voiceless. Okay, Kyrie. Right.
But haven’t you seen all the stuff he’s been saying with his platform to really get the anti-vaccine message out?
I mean, he said “no comment” and “please respect my privacy”….he’s really out here speaking for those who can’t

Really? I couldn't give a rats ass if we ever saw him play again. He's not so good that the league would miss him or that fans should have to put up with his crap. Just imagine an NBA where Kyrie never existed - we wouldn't know the difference.

Well, except for being deprived of these nuggets of wisdom:

"“Mask off” means You stop being something you’re not and stop lying to yourself. It’s the moment you discover the real you and can walk around with NO FEAR in a society that shows a lot of the masks people wear to hide who they truly are. *nothing COVID rule related!! Relax"

I enjoy watching him play. I mean, sure, if he never existed we would never know the difference, but that is true of nearly every single player.

I was first in line for the vaccine and think anti-vaxers are the worst. So this is not a political take. I just really enjoy watching him play

The Nets need to focus on getting Harden to sign an extension, and creating an environment where he would want to stay. If trading Kyrie pisses off Durant, so be it. He already signed on the dotted line.

What do you think the odds are NYC ends the mandate by the end of the season? Maybe Kyrie thinks it will end eventually and he will be able to skip the regular season while still collecting $17M.

If they traded him, what team would you like him to go to for the highest comedy potential. I vote for Philly or the Lakers.
Can't be LA, they have the same mandates now, don't they?

And therein lies the crux of the problem. Municipalities are free to impose their own rules, and so there's no guarantee that the mandates will be limited to NY and SF in the future. Philly, Boston, LA, Sacramento, Portland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Toronto, Detroit, Washington, and Denver are possible future adopters. Some groups do have more power than Rich Paul.

That leaves a lot of teams, especially in the Western Conference. Miami is probably out, since they just redid his position. There are three teams in Texas alone.

Random thought: I wouldn’t be shocked if in the end we find out Kyrie has already been vaccinated and this is all another Kyrie stunt for whatever Kyrie minded reasons. It sounds ridiculous but I wouldn’t put anything past this guy.

The Kyrie experience didn't cause me trauma, I am happy for all sides that he moved on and I generally find him more amusing than annoying. That said, I am incredibly thankful that he didn't resign here - not for the almost certain distractions he would have caused - but for this issue alone. I cannot imagine having to discuss this third rail topic in the context of a new C's season. We are so fortunate that Kyrie didn't feel that Boston was a good fit for him long-term.

Is narcissism a mental illness? Because that appears to be what Kyrie's got.
Yes, Narcistic Personality Disorder is a recognized diagnosis, at least in the DSM. It's not seen as what are commonly referenced as an Axis 1 condition but is one of the many personality disorders classified among Axis 2 conditions. Axis 1 disorders are typically mental illnesses that present clinically in acute episodes, and they often respond well to medication treatment. These are conditions like Schizophrenia, MDD and Bipolar. Axis 2 diagnoses, on the other hand, deal with things like developmental disabilities, personality disorders, and other conditions which arise in childhood and have a fixed and more permanent effect on functioning. These disorders are seen as less responsive to medications and highly resistant to most treatment. Specialized long-term psychotherapies are the recommended approach, primary for the development of healthier coping.
And yeah, he does come off like someone with NPD. To give people a sense of what an exaggerated version of NPD looks like, you only have to look at our 45th president. Who knows, maybe Kyrie's angling to become a candidate for VP when the inevitable happens and Trumps makes another run at the presidency...:(

I hate SAS a lot, but I think he's dead right here.

First of all, how many teams in the league have the salary cap available to bring in Kyrie on a trade? How many teams would willingly trade for a guy that could be shut down at any time by the governments in their state/city? What would you give up for a player that, at any moment, could derail your season by getting COVID and giving it to everyone in the facility/locker room?

Kyrie is the human equivalent of the third rail when it comes to winning basketball games, since the day he left Lebron James. He's got no serious trade value to any team that would want him, and he would probably refuse to play for any team that could afford him. There are a lot of folks inside the NBA media bubble saying the same thing SAS is saying.

On Monday, Woj was reporting that Harden, Durant and the front office were going to make a group decision on how to handle Kyrie:

View: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10014604-woj-kevin-durant-james-harden-to-be-involved-in-deciding-kyrie-irvings-nets-status

On Tuesday, the front office announced Kyrie wouldn't be playing for the Nets anywhere, unless he played everywhere.

https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/kyrie-irving-wont-play-or-practice-nets-until-full-participant/gyi4o2d2jnud1va5l2i8fu4uo

He has next to no trade value.

I don't get it either. Unless it's merely intended to lean on Kyrie's decision process even more. If it's true, then they kind of have to trade him eventually, don't they?
A trade has to happen soon. He still will have a ton of value to someone.

I find it hard to believe that there's a team with sufficient cap room and confidence in their coaching staff's ability to handle a malcontent to trade for him, but you know the NBA better than I do.

Maybe KD and Harden finally tipped management they're interested in actually winning a title above being Kyrie's friend.
