Jaylen's vaccination status is still up for debate. It's more likely than not that he is, but Celtics Reddit/Twitter are worrying because he's never confirmed that he was and they did not use 'breakthrough' language like they did with Udoka's COVID.

Considering how many pro athletes, many of whom are vaccinated and are surrounded at work by a vast majority of vaccinated people, get asymptomatic COVID, and probably only know they are positive because of the frequency of their mandatory testing, I wonder how many vaccinated people in the general population live thru a bout of asymptomatic COVID without ever knowing it, simply because there is no obvious or required reason to get tested.
Or do this many athletes test positive for other reasons perhaps related to their work environments?

For context, my main client (in Midtown NYC) has had 50 or so people going back to office since July. They have mandatory weekly PCR testing and only vaccinated people are allowed in the office. There has only been 1 positive test (and the person tested negative shortly after) in 3.5 months from this group.

I watch these athlete positive test cases closely with interest because it seems to be much higher than what we’ve experienced. Like you, I’m very curious about the cause of it.

Athletes do encounter a lot of people in their day-to-day, between private workouts, team workouts, appearances, and general social interaction. With the bubble rules relaxed, it's conceivable that Brown had some contact with someone who may have had an asymptomatic breakthrough, or with someone who is simply unvaxxed. People in their 20's aren't staying isolated anymore, and I have to believe that applies to NBA players as well. I have trouble putting any blame on an vaxxed athlete at this point (and I'm assuming Brown is vaxxed, because taking the opposite stand of reddit noise is normally a smart play).

Jaylen's grandfather has cancer. I would be very surprised if that alone didn't push him to get vaccinated.

Could it be that there is a higher rate of faked vaccination among the athletes? They do have more money and entourages/gophers to get shit done.

Well, there's precedent for this thanks to Evander Kane, but I have a hard time believing that there's a meaningful number of athletes faking vaccination. It's a completely stupid thing to do, potentially career-altering, and not worth it when the alternative is just getting a shot or two. 100% anecdotal, but I have a close friend (27 and in good shape) who is a fully vaccinated asymptomatic positive right now. I tend to believe that there are a lot of asymptomatic cases in the <35, healthy, vaccinated, physically active population and athletes are the best example of that.

All true. And yet we have a huge number of anti-vaxxers, especially in AA communities.

To get caught doing something like that is potentially career ending seeing as how it's a crime and not a very good PR move by the athlete or the organization. You would think that the consequences of fines and lost wages should outweigh the nonsense of lying.

I am not a medical professional, but I have seen a few discussions on the difference between "infection" and "colonization". The PCR tests are so sensitive that they can detect the remnants of a Covid exposure that failed -- the vaccine succeeded at invoking an immune response that shut the virus done.

I wonder if this explains the frequency of covid occurence. The alternative explanation (that JB etc are indulging in the worst of woke hippness) is just depressing.

A reference:
https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210713/Colonization-by-SARS-CoV-2-not-synonymous-with-infection-screening-study-highlights.aspx
"In the current state of knowledge, it would seem that SARS-CoV-2 can establish its presence for a short period on some individuals, while not being able to infect the tissues or cause-specific adaptive immunity. Strangely, scientists seem to have missed this obvious pattern so far, despite its being present in over a tenth of positive cases. This is inferred from the point that retests are rarely ordered after a PCR test comes back positive. "

Yes, sure, I understand this. However, someone asked why it's seemingly more common among professional athletes than the general population, when they are also regularly tested. I was just offering one possible explanation to that broader question, and not singling out JB or any specific athlete, who very well could be vaccinated. I'm not sure that I even believe it myself, but we do have evidence of at least one professional athlete going this route and money talks.

If you go a few threads away from this one you can read about 18 ex-NBA players systematically committing insurance fraud for a small fraction of their career earnings. Punishable with prison time.

You really don't have to be young to be dumb

Based on the people JB hangs out with at MIT & his deep thinking on multiple issues, including lauding the WNBA & NBA for their vaccination rates, I would be pretty shocked if he wasn't vaccinated.

This sucks but Langford and Nesmith are going to get a lot of playing time as a result.

First victim of Coach Ime Thibodeau's early season rotations, feels like. I hope he learns from this and backs off a bit. I know overtimes and all, but the Jays have been ridden heavily to start the season.

Agreed.

TL/Al are also not built to go 30mpg in October/November

Playing your All-Stars 40mpg (then calling them out for not playing 100% on defense in Oct/Nov) instead of playing #9/10 in the rotation consistent minutes is my biggest beef with IME so far. Even Thibs isn't close to running his top 6 as hard as IME is driving his 6.

Also of having Covid during training camp.

Jaylen's play style is also conducive to hammies and quads, as his injury history shows. He's a player that relies on and uses explosion as a big part of his game. A couple of weeks off will do him some good.

This would be a nice time for JT to sort his shit out.

I’ve questioned Ime as much as anyone but when you eliminate the overtime’s Jaylen is actually playing fewer mpg than he has the past two seasons……and he even had a game off in there. Pinning an injury on Ime after 8 games due to overuse is quite the stretch. Jaylen’s durability issues are becoming the norm around here.

Didn’t Jaylen on an already tweaked hamstring try a monster dunk making it worse in the ECF against the Cavs the year Kyrie was on the team but hurt?

I don’t think this guy can help himself with the explosive moves and his hammies cannot handle it. He needs TB12

Though, I suppose the title could also include: "Jaylen's hammy whammy!"
