I think it’s Luke Fickell or /ducks Lane Kiffin. But they’ll let the in-house interim team try it this year

I know Fickell and the AD have a relationship, but sure seems like you would want someone who was a known entity out west. I think Peterson is the first guy you call.

Dumping Jacksonville in September of your first season would by far trump any of the other "big time college guy goes to the pros" failures/abandonment.

What issues with sexual assault?
USC agrees to pay $852 million in latest settlement involving gynecologist accused of abuse

The University of Southern California has agreed to an $852 million settlement to resolve lawsuits from hundreds of women alleging that the university failed to respond adequately to complaints that a gynecologist sexually abused patients at its student health center, according to terms disclosed Thursday.

USC and attorneys for the plaintiffs made the terms public after a hearing in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The magnitude of the settlement — about one-seventh the size of the $5.9 billion endowment USC reported in 2020 — made it a landmark case for higher education.
Previously, the university had also agreed to pay more than $200 million in a 2018 federal class-action settlement involving women who were patients of former USC gynecologist George Tyndall. Counting Thursday’s developments, USC’s total bill for legal settlements now exceeds $1 billion.

As long as he puts out good teams at BC, his name will always be mentioned. Simply the nature of that job.
Calling BC good is a stretch but they are def outperforming what you would expect from a team in the Northeast.

Maybe a better phrase would have been "As long as BC's program is seen to be on the rise".

Reggie Bush said his pick for the next USC coach would be Deion Sanders. He was 100% serious and spent 3-4 minutes explaining “why.”

If I were going to put money on a longshot, I would put money on Jon Gruden. I could see Mark Davis looking for some type of "mutually agreed exit" for Gruden to move on from the Raiders without having to eat that ridiculous contract. They've got the stadium now, they don't need Gruden to attract the fans. USC wanted Gruden in 2013 but they couldn't make it work.

My GF’s best friend’s child is a scholarship athlete at USC. She tells us that the Athletics Department there is a giant soap opera/dumpster fire/shitshow all rolled into one. Constant political infighting and internecine battles for power and influence. It‘s going to be a challenge for them to make the right hire in that condition.

Honestly I think this can sum all bluebloods over the past 20 years.

I dunno. Besides USC and tOSU, I don’t think there has been a ton of drama surrounding the top football programs. Probably because sustained greatness is partly a product of not getting ensnared in those things.

Imo, the lesson of the Pete Carroll years is that the natural advantages of USC are such that if they manage to hire a great football coach, the other stuff will be largely taken care of, especially in the brave new world of NIL money. Finding a great football coach isn’t easy, but it’s easier than finding someone who can build a program; this particular blind squirrel has a better chance than most of finding a nut.

The NIL stuff is going to be huge going forward. I suppose it's hard to figure out how the random Phil Knight style billionaire skews things for a few programs, but it's hard to imagine too many schools better positioned long term than USC to have wealthy alums buying talent.

At least they eat up a lot of money that could go to faculty pay and educational infrastructure!

When I was on the faculty Academic Senate, there were members who wanted to pass a resolution calling for the football team to be disbanded so the resources could be reallocated. That, uh...didn't happen.

Here’s a speculative list of potential candidates the LA Times.

https://www.latimes.com/sports/usc/story/2021-09-13/top-13-candidates-for-usc-football-coaching-job-clay-helton

Some names on this list don’t belong imo. I don’t think James Franklin would leave Penn State for USC, and I don’t see any college hiring Bienemy because of the allegations that got him banned from the CU campus for a time years ago.

BC fans will be disappointed to see Jeff Hafley mentioned.
Disagree about Franklin. He's shown he can run a big ship in Happy Valley, but PSU and everyone else in the Big 10 East are perennially going to be chasing OSU.
