I'm guessing he might be going somewhere ... not necessarily to Boston
Hope not, but can’t think of who else might afford him or even have PA available for a 1B.

FWIW, the Baseball Trade Values site has Hosmer’s negative value almost canceling out Abrams’ positive value, and he’s certainly blocked at this point. Not sure it’s worth the hassle for Gore, Hassell or Campusano.

And Clevinger back next year.
Not to mention Lamet who finished 4th in the Cy Young last year but is hurt.

And then they got Weathers, who has a 2.73 ERA and is only 21 years old, Chris Paddack’s been struggling but is still only 25 and looked like a future stud just a few years ago. Morejon and MacKenzie Gore. That team is so stacked for ‘22.

I wonder if Paddack is headed back to Washington.

Cross-posting from game thread, but perhaps they're going to get a starter and have decided to make Houck their eighth-inning guy for the remainder of this season. Better to have him make that adjustment in the minors, then come back up afterwards
Forcing Houck into a bullpen role when Garrett Richards is still being gifted a spot in the starting rotation seems beyond wrong-headed. One pitcher is clearly better than the other; that's the one you should be giving many more innings too. And sure, with Sale coming back you already have one spot in the rotation reserved (unless you're willing or wanting to go to a six-man rotation for some reason), but there's more than one below-replacement-level reliever in the bullpen at the moment that can be yeeted to make room for Richards and Perez.

So I don't think that's what they're actually doing, Bloom seems too smart for that.

I think it is pretty clear that Houck is in the rotation, Cora said he is coming back up to make the TOR start. This is simply making room for a position player between starts.

Am I crazy? Haven't the Rays always hid a stud pitcher in the minors/pen all season long only to break them out in the playoffs when no one has at bats against him yet? (Price, Archer (that was the plan in 2012 anyway), McClanahan, feels like I'm forgetting some others). Feels very much like what Chaim is doing with Houck here.

Not here
Kimbrel and Rizzo for I don’t know and I won’t make a prediction because I don’t want to look dumb. We need a first baseman and we were reported to be sniffing around on Craig. Make this shit happen.
Honestly, Kimbrel and Rizzo have always sounded to me like the best combination of filling needs and not giving up too goddamn much. As fun and exciting as it is to make the big trade, what I really want is for them to take advantage of this season without sacrificing the next five.

I am a little surprised that if we are talking a Rizzo/Kimbrel package why not call Miami to see what an Aguilar/Alcantara package deal might look like

I think that Miami would, justifiably, want more for those two than Chicago would get for the other package. Rizzo is a pending FA and Craig is a 33 y/o reliever with a 16m option for 2022. Aguilar is under control for next year and Alcantara is a starter, who’s 25 years old, with 3 more remaining ARB years.

IMO with the way Houck has been pitching (and with Sale coming back) I dont think a SP is that high of a priority anymore

Yeah, it's not as though Sale-Eovaldi-Rodriguez-Houck-Pivetta isn't a very, very good rotation. It's really just 1B that's a position of desperate need.

Have we had our first Mystery Team sighting this year, or will that come sometime later?

Boras says drive up the price.
I've seen this like three times in this thread. Why does Boras care what he's traded for? I could see an argument for "give him a big extension or he'll veto and go to one of the other interested teams" but I don't get why he'd be driving up the trade price through Heyman.

Boras is extracting concessions to waive the no-trade.

Those teams are believed to include the Dodgers, and perhaps the Giants, Red Sox and another team.

That's the one to keep an eye on. Every time.

Yes. This would be true and if it was competition for a free agent, and a percentage of the contract would be going to the agent. Other than creating a little buzz for their client, which won’t matter anything compared to how they perform in the postseason, I’m not sure how the agent benefits.

I think we all know Friedman, Preller, and Bloom are just endlessly hitting F5 on Twitter to gather information on what they should do.

Really, the Sox should just trade for Story and move Bogaerts to first base. Nobody'd see it coming (and it might actually be a really good move).

Oh yeah, that's exactly what you do. Move your franchise player from his preferred position to a brand new position in the heart of a pennant race.

Can we keep the EEI-level fantasy talk out of the thread?

The NBA draft and MLB trade deadline happening this close together is making me lose it. I think I just read that the Dodgers are trading Kyle Kuzma to the Nets for Max Scherzer.

I don't think acquiring Scherzer is as binary a GFIN/Build for the Future move as it might seem. You're only guaranteed .5 years of Scherzer, so the return the Nationals get is not going to be huge. A top 100 prospect (maybe someone like Jeter Downs) and a few low minors guys seems like the appropriate return. The idea that you'd have to give up multiple significant pieces seems not to track with the recent history of these types of deals (there's a Ringer article about this right now, in fact).
This largely depends on how many teams want him. WHO those teams are, what sort of resources they have available and how much they believe Scherzer is the one guy that can deliver a championship.

Gotta be honest, none of the names we’ve heard do much for me personally. Honestly just starting to think standing pat is the way to go.
At the absolute very least, the lineup needs a 1B bat that's better than Dalbec/Cordero/Marwin. Even marginally better will do.
