I did not know about the statues, so my first reactions was "What?" Finding out about the statues makes me think "Alright. Maybe." We'll see how it grows on me.

Would have loved Spiders.

Drum guy and friends need to start showing up dressed as Peter Quill, Groot, Rocket, Drax, and Gomorrah.

They will always be the Indians to me
Yeah man, I still call our local nine the Americans too.

Guardians is... fine. The statues feel like a bit of an obscure reference when there's a lot to work with in Cleveland.

The font is good, but that G/baseball logo is not great.

Is this change applicable now? As in they are NOW the Guardians, or will they finish this season as the Indians and then change for next year?

In the tradition of Mr. Met, they have designed a lovable mascot with a giant round head.

I'm just glad they didn't make some lame reference to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the team name. Guardians is a bit Arena Football-sounding, but the logos and wordmark are all pretty nice.

Spiders was just there for the taking, though. There are so few professional teams that use bug/arachnid/insect-based team names.

It's lame, and I like it. Most good sports nicknames make no fucking sense and are usually tied to something incidental or regionally quasi-specific. Like the Dodgers, it would confuse even folks who were actively dodging trolley cars at the time wonder what it is, but it works. Or you can be super lame and just try to identify it with something that nobody would question, like the Rockies. That's like a nickname an intern came up with on their job application. Same goes for the Nationals. Then there are names like "The Kraken". Not come up with an intern, but a marketing company who tries to justify paying them 20 million dollars. The absolutely correct team nickname is one that you kind of figured that the team owner came up with after 7 beers with his buddies. This one fits the bill.

The Rockies is a fantastic team name and a nod to the former NHL team that later became the NJ Devils.

The Nationals is an old reference to the former Senators, as teams had many nicknames 100 years ago.

Some of the best names are nods to long term minor league teams, like Padres and Marlins.

This is exactly where I'm at. I would've preferred the Spiders, but this isn't too bad.

I had no idea about the statues. It's pretty cool. But those designs need a change.

I was getting used to the possibility of Spiders, but Cleveland already deals with people around the country treating it as a loser city. I wasn't a fan of reconnecting to the biggest loser in MLB history. Besides, it's also confusing to people who don't realize it was a completely different franchise.

By the Cy Young connection is cool. And the logo possibilities are endless.

The Cleveland version would be what, the PawPaweaters?
Pierogieaters. I'd be surprised if any of my friends around Cleveland even know what a paw paw is. They don't really grow in northern Ohio and they're also associated with our neighbors to the west ("Indiana bananas").

At the end of the day, any name is better than the old one and any logo is going to be better than the Native American caricature they used for decades.

That's what I wonder, because the Twitter account is still labeled the Cleveland Indians, not the Guardians

Personally, I don't mind the flying G and I like the new block C as well

For those hating on the flying G logo, that will be a meme used to say "GG" in about a week. Merch with that flying G is going to sell like hotcakes

My nerd dad joke response to the news was that Arizona should've changed their name to the Guardians so they could be the AZGuardians.

I am Groot.
They need to have Groot throw out the first pitch.

As mentioned above, they could have sold a ton of Spider merchandise, particularly for the kids. Plus they could have had a cool Spider mascot.

I generally like it. Cool little inside local tie-in, not that dumb by team name standards.
I mean, MLB has 2 different colored socks as team names, CLE has a team named the Browns.

Edit- also I'm a fan of having a local tie-in that means something locally instead of "this is what people who have never been to Cleveland think CLE is about"

Do you think people associate the New York Highlanders with the Yankees? I mean the Highlanders didn't exactly set the world on fire during their existence. I think you vastly over exaggerate the association people would have between the 1899 Spiders and present day team if it was named the Spiders.

@Guardians is held by Disney/Marvel, so either they’re trying to work a deal or trying to find an alternative.

Is this satire?
Can you explain why, @jsinger121 ? I mean, you volunteered this. I'd like to hear your reasoning behind it.

That said, I like the name. I like the uniform and the C on the hat - It's a nod to the previous typeface used - but I absolutely HATE the logo. For me, it's too similar to the Angels' uniforms from the 1990s, where the "A" had wings. It doesn't make a heckuva lot of sense to me. But hey, things can change in a few years, just like the Rays.

GuardiansMLB probably

I'm not a Marvel fan, how big is the Guardians IP? I'm guessing huge, like anything Marvel right now.

It’s pretty big, especially for what was a fairly obscure comic before the movie came out. They’re remodeling a lot of the area around Epcot to be Guardians themed.

This is pretty much where I am. I was on board with Spiders but I won't judge this until there's been time to get used to it and see how it feels. In my experience it's really hard to predict from first impressions how something will feel over time. Knowing there's a local tie-in makes it cooler, IMO.

I do wonder if there was a conscious desire to keep the 'IANS" ending to the team name. Not sure why you'd do that on purpose, maybe just a coincidence.
