Who did the team just hire as a GM? You think experience matters?
I mean even more than that 80% of the list of people being interviewed have no head coach experience. Unless McMillan jumps ship from the Hawks they are likely hiring an assistant with no head coach experience.

this is a lot closer to morse code than semaphore signal.
More like flashing neon lights. It's going to be a black coach because it's what the star players want (regardless of your feelings about making hiring choices based on skin color). Hammond and others are de facto eliminated.

Why do people keep saying this. Brad has been heavily involved in personnel decisions with this team for years now.

Of course experience matters.
Why? Experienced doesn't mean good.

Is Theo a better example than Brad? Sometimes new is good.

I agree. Experience is hardly the only factor. But it matters. Some people bring novel approaches or high energy or whatever. I'm sure as hell not rooting for a retread because experience. But it would be a surprise to me if the new coach doesn't have either years of head coaching experience at some level or years of NBA assistant coaching. Someone with a year or two (or less) at those things isn't impossible, but would be a surprise.

So it seemed like Beal and Westbrook really liked Scott Brooks. Beal even called him a 'true player's coach'. If you're looking to court Beal soon, does this make sense to consider?

It still seems the only path for a black coach is to be professional player. There are not many black coaches who can follow the path where they coach above a level they played in. While around half the NBA coaches followed the path of being college players, some at low levels, worked there way up. Only two black coaches took that path. Dwayne Casey (who was widely praised as as an assistant for years) got his head coaching job at age 48. It seems this path is almost closed to black coaches who do not win at the college level. It seems a female coach will get more buzz from the press taking this route.

Looking at the 7 black coaches and white (including Stotts and Stevens) coaches

Black Coaches
5 of 7 former nba players all with 5+ years in NBA
Other 2 are former college players
1 coach with Family connection to coaching that may have helped get foot in the door.

White coaches
6/21 former NBA players
13/21 former college
5 at low level colleges
1 with no playing expereince

Black Coaches
Former NBA Players
Larry Drew 10 years NBA player
Nate McMillan 12 years NBA player
Tyronn Lue played 12 years NBA player
Doc Rivers 13 years nba player
Monty Williams 6 years nba

College Players
Dwayne Casey College player, became NBA assistant at age 37 major dues paying
Stephen Silas worked as assistant under his father was a very young assistant at age 27.

White coaches
Former NBA players 10 years Nash, Kerr, Walton, Brooks
Former NBA players with brief (< 5 years) Donavon, Carlisle,

Played College but not NBA
Borrego
Spoelestra (pro player in Europe)
Vogel (Div 3)
Mike Malone
Mike Budenholzer (div 3)
Chris Finch (div 3. pro in Europe)
Stan Van Gundy (div 3)
Tom Thibodeau (Div3?)
Steve Clifford
Popovich (USAF Basketball)
Quin Snyder
Nick Nurse
Stotts
Stevens

Did not play College Basketball

Does Spoelestra count as white or Asian?

And that's 28 coaches. There's 2 missing.

edit: Borrego is also Hispanic.

Wow, Rick Carlisle is out in Dallas. I'm not sure how star players view Carlisle, but I've always thought he was a magician as a coach. It's probably the wrong time to bring an old white guy to Boston, but I do think he's the most qualified guy available, and he's going to get a job somewhere.

Does Luka really like him? If so Carlisle can be pink with purple polka dots for all I cared. Maybe he'd take a GM job in Boston?

The question is whether the timing of this decision is related to the situation in Boston. His comments certainly gave no indication that he is through coaching.

He immediately becomes the most qualified candidate available. I've got to believe he will at least be interviewed.

Yeah, in his statement he said he was looking forward to the next chapter in his coaching career.

I think the thing on Carlisle has always been some players kinda like/respect him, some guys hate him (he and Rondo despised each other from day 1), but he isn't a guy players are going out of their way for.

He's a good coach, but I doubt he's on the Celtics' list.

I first sensed that Luka hated Voulgaris from the reported screaming matches. Then I sensed that Luka hated Nelson. Then I sensed that Luka hated Carlisle. I’ve always sensed that Luka hated every single referee.

I’m not sure Luka likes anyone. He has the real potential to piss off a LOT of people in this league at a very young age.

The timing of the Haralabob hit piece combined with both Donnie and Carlisle leaving indicates there was a lot of disfunction and unhappy people in Dallas.

In fairness, does anyone like Voulgaris? I mean aside from Dean Demakis.

Carlisle to Indiana seems too obvious given his close friendship with Larry.
Carlisle has already been coach there, so not sure he’d want go back. Plus Bird stepped down in 2017, and while he still has an advisory role, Prichard has the power there.

Adding to this, Carlisle clashed a lot with Jason Kidd as well, apparently. And it sounds like Nelson was fired primarily not due to issues with Doncic but since Voulgaris basically took over his job. I am not sure its fair to label Doncic a malcontent.

Also, doesn't every young star seem to hate the refs? Learning how to whine excessively is part of the growth curve for a superstar in the NBA.

I didn't realize Dean was a thing here. Played basketball with him in Vegas several summer leagues ago. Good screener.

He gets dunked on a lot around here, definitely could work on his verticality.
Yeah, I just did a search lol. On the + side, Luka as rich man's Larry Bird hasn't aged awfully as a take.

Enjoyed talking hoops with him back in the day, but then he got carried away with the TAKES culture.

I expect we'll find out pretty soon, since I doubt Carlisle would have stepped down without having something else already lined up.
Not necessarily. Once Nelson left the party it seemed like Carlisle’s party was over as well. Nobody knows the inner workings better than Carlisle and he surely knows the direction the organization was going did not include him. It isn’t like he won’t have a job next year so best to get on the market ASAP.

Yeah that's how I read it too. Rats leaving a sinking ship of some kind. Something is up.
Listening to Zach Lowe and Tim McMahon right now and my takeaway is everyone hated each other in that organization. They need a top to bottom house cleaning if they want to salvage the Luka thing before it’s too late.

The rumors are Luka hated Haralabob and Carlisle but had a good relationship with Donnie Nelson.

I haven’t listened to The Lowe Post on this yet but it seemed like everyone thinks Voulgaris has way too much influence (which makes sense because he’s extremely unqualified and the things he did in the early 2000s that were ahead of the curve are commonplace now).

Carlisle would be a nice fit in Milwaukee, who seems to be outschemed every big game.

Carlisle is an old teammate of Ainge. Maybe they both take a year off, then team up somewhere.

That makes quite a bit of sense. Utah would be the most obvious place for Ainge. If the Clippers finish off the Jazz, could Snyder be on the hot seat?
Snyder’s Jazz had one of the best regular seasons in franchise history and was at the top of everyone’s Coach of the Year ballots this year. I’ll eat a log of Rich Kelley’s sh*t if Snyder is fired this offseason.

If they go with a 1st time HC, I wouldn't mind if they added an asst coach that was a former HC (ie Stotts, Carlisle, Brooks, even Brett Brown)
