VORP's starting the May game thread directly led to the Rays going 22-6 with a +72 run differential, so I figure someone else should start the June one. :)

James Karinchak allowed as many hits tonight (4) as he did over his first 22 appearances, but managed to hold on for the save.

Madison Bumgarner gave up hits to the first six Mets batters today: single, single, HR, single, single, single, lucky to only give up four runs.

His roller coaster season continues. Dating back over his previous 3 starts and the 1st inning today, he's allowed 17 earned runs in his last 14 innings.

I knew letting a Yankee fan start this thread was a bad idea

Baltimore may have just gotten a lot worse. John Means gave up home runs to two of the first four batters he faced today and then called for the manager and trainer... walked off with an apparent injury.

Rich Hill has transformed into an Ace. Had the lowest ERA in the AL for the month of May, 0.79, and threw another 5 shutout innings today in 3-0 win over TEX.

He's gained 4 MPH on his fastball and changeup from his age 29 to 33 seasons. At the very least he's using the high end sticky stuff everyone else is.
Is that impossible? I’m unaware of the historical context of prime seasons gaining MPH.

A few years ago, didn't they change the way velocity was measured, which artificially bumped up pitchers by a few MPH?

This is old, but velocity tends to drop off fairly linearly after age 26-27.

Pitcher Aging Curves: Introduction | FanGraphs Baseball

Given that context, a significant gain in velocity from 29-33 would be an outlier. As for sticky stuff, I assumed an increase in spin rate would be connected to a speed increase, but maybe that's not the case.

I guess it's possible deGrom is able to get better at an age he should be declining because he got into pitching late and got hurt. There's much less wear and tear on his body than your average 33 year old pitcher. Or he's the pitching equivalent of Barry Bonds, who's cheating in the same way everyone else it, but it just works a whole lot better for him.

Cedrick Mullins is up to 9 consecutive hits. He did make an out this time, as he was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple on a bang-bang play upheld by replay. That means he still needs a triple for the cycle today instead of a double.

The netting behind home collapsed in the Phillies-Nationals game. It’s a real debacle.
Wow, interesting, Gio Urshela has been jumping into the netting when he would pull up otherwise and it's been completely supporting his weight, I wonder if he'll see that and stop doing it.

Only the Tigers have scored fewer runs than the Yankees among AL teams

Rays come back from 5-3 late to tie it and go to extras against WAS. Give up 2 in the top of 10th, score 2 in bottom 10 to tie then give up another 2 in top 11. Get runners on 2nd/3rd in bottom 11, but can’t get them in and lose 9-7.

Since May 13, they have 5 losses. All have been either by 1 run or in extra innings.

The Zach Wheeler contract really starting to look like a good one. 8 IPs, 12 Ks, 0 ERs against the Braves today, dropping his ERA to 2.29 for the season

Aaron Civale with 8 shutout innings tonight, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, 11 K's. The hit led off the game and all 3 base runners were in the 1st inning. He retired the last 22 batters he faced.

Burned . . . Blacklisted
Fuck, that isn't good news at all.
Trying to downplay it in this quote, it feels like this is a teen in a slasher movie saying they aren’t much concerned about Jason Vorhees pursuing them because they once took a 6-week karate class and ran a mile that one time.

“My level of concern is not too high," deGrom said of his elbow injury following the Mets' 3-2 win. "I'm pretty sure it's going to be something that we can treat and hopefully not miss any time."

DeGrom doesn't plan to seek an MRI or other imaging, and he expects to proceed with his normal routine in preparation for his next start, with a little extra treatment mixed in.”

It feels like we have all seen this movie and have a sense of the rest of it. Hope not, but…

I gotta say, the Indians game was spectacular. What a fantastic comeback, down 4-1 with 2 out and no one on in the 9th. They tie it up and go to extras, where the pitcher blows a 30 foot force out throw to home and the Indians win.

That was a really entertaining finish

So I was going through boxscores / how scoring innings went in the games as I usually do, and I found myself very surprised to see Mookie had a fielding error. Checked out MLB.TV, he broke back and was completely fooled on a shallow flyball. He recovered and the ball went right into his glove, but somehow he never fully squeezed it and it popped out.

He also grounded into a DP, which he very very rarely did in a Sox uniform but he didn't seem to be running super fast. His AVG at this moment is a Davis-like .248, and OPS .794. He's had nagging injuries this season, but something to watch as his numbers continue to hover way below his usual level...

CWS are +108 on run differential. Next closest is TB with +85. That just seems crazy.
Sox are a paltry +29.
of course 3rd place Tor is +51. So who knows.

Stunning road woes for 4 teams right now.
Arizona has lost 20 in a row. Balt has lost 16 in a row. Rangers have lost 17 of 18. Rockies have lost 27 of 32. That a 6-80 record over those stretches of ineptitude.
