There's now reverse pressure not to be the last one out so that they can claim they listened to the supporters.

I would've thought the Serie A teams needed the cash the most.

But Tottenham puts Juventus, Inter, and Milan to shame.
Most of that for Spurs is their brand new stadium, and given their revenues, plus who the loans are from etc, I think they aren't in as bad shape as the Italian clubs. Barca is the sneaky one... they want/need a new stadium (or significant upgrade) but that debt level they have is already closing in on unsustainable. They need an influx of cash to shore things up so they can take out loans for stadium related matters. Without it, they are stuck servicing that debt, and having growing costs from an aging stadium

The writing was on the wall last night when Perez was warning his co-conspirators about backing out.

This was a pretty fragile coalition from the getgo and they knew it.

Another indication - how many of the team owners came out and have PCs to explain their motivations for this? FSG has taken huge criticism for hiding in its bunker and letting poor Jurgen Klopp go in front of the cameras instead
The Globe article today on fan dissent on the decision said that the FSG declined to comment to The Globe on the criticism LFC fans have had for the proposal. That to me is really embarrassing. It said something like "FSG declined to comment on the story, and referred The Globe to the release the club put on its website yesterday. FSG chairman John Henry also is the owner of The Boston Globe."

I wonder if some owners put their clubs up for sale. I could see some of them wanting out if they can't get their own way.

Total debt is not the relevant metric, a lot depends on the structure and the stress it puts on cash flows. Tottenham's is mostly stadium-related and the average maturity of their debt is something like 20 years. Meanwhile Barca were reported to have 700m in debt coming due within the next 12 months.

Yep the owners are all complete cowards. None of them were available publicly after the announcement, leaving the players and coaches to face the press.

I'm assuming most of that is from their shiny new stadium?

Thanks, y'all. I'm fascinated by this story, but I'm not as knowledgeable as most of the folks here.

I'll hang up and listen.

Woodward probably got fired for not getting this over the finish line more than the fan backlash. It's still pretty funny, though.

I mean they basically tried to stage a coup. Perez is probably fine because he just won re-election unopposed for Real Madrid, but I assume there will be continued significant fallout from this.

And well-deserved.

This might be it for me and the Sox too. John Henry and the other American owners have been despicable here.

How can something with this many VERY IMPORTANT AND RICH PEOPLE involved crumble after 1 day of backlash? What did they expect? It's stunning.

EDIT: I don't mean "rich" means they're smarter, but they should have enough money to pay smart people to give them an educated guess.
A lot of my day job is helping clients think about and respond to potential events in the future including through scenario planning and war gaming. Remains surprising to me how many major firms and leaders don’t get people to plan and game out potential countermoves when they announce a major action

Wondering if UEFA is thinking of reworking it’s CL revamp given the SLs collapse ? It made all those concessions to the big clubs only to have them shoved in their face.
The may (at minimum) pull the 2 wild-card spots for 'elite' teams that don't qualify any other way.

Some day someone needs to do an oral history of the past four days. The behind-the-scenes maneuvering must be amazing.

Graham Souness wasnt mincing his words during the Sky TV pre game a few minutes ago. (He got a bit Rule Britannia during the broadcast, but he was Rangers manager.)

I find the idea that an Oligarch with questionable ties to Russian mafia and oil rich arabs who have been proping up City being dragged into anything pretty amusing. But he is right about one thing, Liverpool ownership were absolutely spineless in letting Klopp have to field questions about the SL yesterday. If I'm a Liverpool fan, I want these cowards gone pronto.

Wouldn't a possible idea be to have some form of play-off legs for 'elite' teams that didn't qualify? Cash out with a big game(s) early in the season between big clubs, and at least have some form of merit be involved with UCL qualification?
