New & Improved: The 2021 Pats Draft Contest!

Hey, draftniks – it’s that time again! And this time, @SMU_Sox has helped define a better-than-before draft contest approach, one that plays out in two parts.

As in past years, you get to pick 20 players for the Pats. Please submit these as last name, first name, position, school. There aren’t any official points for adding comments on why you think a player would be a good fit, but I always like reading them…

With respect to the contest itself: Part 1 gets settled on May 4. At that point, all the draft choices will have been selected (from Apr 29-May 1), and the Pats will have had 72 hours to sign UDFAs. In a twist, this year, points are being weighted towards the top of the draft, to reward SoSHers who see best-fit prospects who can contribute immediately the same way BB does:
  • If you correctly pick a Pats first round draft choice: 4 points
  • If you correctly pick a Pats second round draft choice: 3 points
  • If you correctly pick a Pats day three draft choice: 2 points
  • If you correctly pick a UDFA who signs with the Pats: 2 points
  • BONUS! If you are one of only one or two people who pick someone who the Pats select/sign, you get an additional point for being uniquely clued in.
$50 to the Jimmy Fund in the name of the person who scores highest in Part 1. If two SoSHers tie, the first person to submit final picks is the winner.

Now – the all-new part 2! Sticking with the “best fits matter” theme, in Part 2, you get 5 points for everyone you picked who makes the initial 53 roster. Again, $50 to the Jimmy Fund in the name of the winner, with ties going to whoever submitted their picks first.

Looking forward to exercising my credit card for a good cause, and to making y'all feel better with my own picks and score...

Living proof that my reading skills are better than my comprehension skills...
I have my big board up. I added projected role and a scheme fit from 1-5. I did my initial 234 players. I will fill in another 20-30 as we go but they will most likely be day 3 guys.

Darden is one of my favorites. Big fan of a lot of the same guys you all mentioned. Rashad Weaver is another. Landon Dickerson is one of my favorite players in the draft from a tape perspective.

Of the guys I have a day 3 grade on (6.49 - flashes starter starter traits) I love Cameron McGrone. He is a home run swing on an athletic linebacker who loves crashing downhill. He can stack and shed well. He's young and somewhat inexperienced but if you gave him a year to develop he has dominant physical traits. Rhamondre Stevenson and Michael Carter would make a nice day 3 backfield duo. Carter would make a perfect White replacement and would offer more as a runner. I also like Kylin Hill for that role. Jimmy Morrissey if he can add enough functional strength is a really good athlete and excels at making blocks at the next level. KJ Britt and Derrick Barnes could be late day 3 STers and downhill thumper LBs. Joshua Kaindoh, Elerson Smith, Shaka Toney, and Jordan Smith could be day 3 pass rushers who have better than a snowballs chance in hell for working out. I also really like Marvin Wilson as a run stuffer. There are some NTs they might want to double-dip on too. Oh last one is Charles Snowden. I think he is going to be a quality 3-4 OLB/ILB hybrid player.
I went through @SMU_Sox list, and picked none of the guys (except Dickerson, tbf) that he highlighted. Instead, I went for the seldom-used 'pick 20 guys from 20 different schools!' approach.

Sure, that's probably not a great selection filter. But heck, it can't hurt my overall success, based on past results.

Here's what I've got. Looking forward to seeing what those of you who are way more clued in than I am think!

Fields Justin QB Ohio State Okay, chances are slim, but I'm hopeful
Horn Jaycee CB South Carolina If the Pats stay at 15, Horn might be BPA
Jenkins Teven OL Oklahoma St. In case BPA comes with a "…who can crush other large humans" qualifier
Dickerson Landon OL Alabama Better than hs QB, and nobody is trading up to 3 to take him
Collins Zaven LB Tulsa I really wanted to type 'Micah Parsons' here, but I don't know about the 'character questions'
Parsons Micah LB Penn State On second thought, John's got an 8.25 on him. Git 'er done, Bill!
Meinerz Quinn OL Wisconsin-Whitewater Hedging my 'nasty interior OL' bets in case Jenkins and Dickerson go early
McNeil Alim DL NC State Upgrading Butler
Odeyingbo Dayo DL Vanderbilt Pressure from the edge is good - so is the prospect of singing "Day-o!" at my TV
Joseph Kelvin CB Kentucky Chance to be a factor on ST and maybe work his way into the defensive rotation over time
Cisco Andre S Syracuse On the theory that tackling is easier to coach than range
Mills Davis QB Stanford The Pats need to draft a QB, right? And Fields won't make it to them? I get this wrong every year.
Brown III Bobby NT Texas A&M I think the biggest gap on the Pats D is a very large human in the middle of the DL
Rumph II Chris LB/ST Duke I'm in my "Roman numerals" phase. It will pass.
Stevenson Rhamondre RB Oklahoma I had never heard of this guy until I read John's writeup. Now, I'm sold!
Shelvin Tyler DT LSU Another 'larger person in the middle of the DL' pick
Collins Nico WR Michigan The Pats need WRs, and Collins is a WR who will still be on the board when they look for one
Wiggins James S Cincinnati Like Kelvin, a guy who might stick on ST as he works towards a spot on D
Camp Jalen WR Georgia Tech Like Wiggins, a chance to make the club on ST and then develop into a pro WR
Hufanga Talanoa S USC Great name, and completes my '20 schools in 20 picks' thing

Think this is my final. Had to put in Fields and Lance because one can only hope!

1) Robert Rochell, CB, Central Arkansas: He has the measurables they like including a 6.84 3-cone and 4.08 SS. He is a press-man type he just needs coaching. Great in run support.
2) Eric Stokes, CB, UGA: Press-man type. High level of competition. Has speed for days. Needs to add strength.
3) Benjamin St. Juste, CB, Minnesota: He has the 3-cone and length they want. He is a good tackler and willing and able in run support.
4) Trey Lance, QB, NDSU
5) Zech McPhearson, CB, Texas Tech: He can play inside or outside in any scheme. Has elite athleticism but not top end speed. Great STer too.
6) Stone Forsythe, OT, Florida: He is a... stone wall in pass pro. His issues are he is so tall that he lacks leverage in the run game. Might not ever be good there.
7) Spencer Brown, OT, Northern Iowa: He is a superb athlete with great length and size. He reminds me a lot of Vollmer. He just needs a ton of technique work.
8) Larnel Coleman, OT, U-Mass: Was a basketball player and D-end in high school. He is long, tall, strong and athletic. Huge ceiling but needs to develop. Intangibles out the ass and a real film junkie. Still relatively new to the game and will need a year.
8) Brady Christensen, OL, BYU: You want to meet Joe Thuney 2.0? Look no further. He can also, likely, play center. I absolutely love Christensen.
9) Landon Young, OT, Kentucky: Big, long, and strong. He's the bargain basement version of Forsythe.
10) Trey Smith, OG/OT, Tennessee: He played LT as a freshman but needs coaching to really cultivate his excellent athleticism. He is huge, tested off the charts, and oozes power. OG/OT type.
11) Tre Brown, CB, Oklahoma. He’s a smaller guy who probably plays slot but handled guys on the outside. Great tackler and good in the run game. Will be a core 4 STer. Nice ball skills.
12) Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
13) Michael Carter, RB, UNC: He is the lightning to Harris' thunder. He is also our James White replacement but an even better runner. Michael Carter is one of my favorite guys in this draft and a perfect fit.
14) Trey Sermon, RB, The Ohio State: Sermon/Carter/Harris is a fantastic trio.
15) Khalil Herbert, RB, Virginia Tech: Electric back who is deadly to the outside and reminds me of Dalvin Cook a bit. Would be another lightning and flashed as a receiver.
16) Jermar Jefferson, RB, Oregon State: He is an outside compliment to Harris and would excel in a gap scheme where his speed will show.
17) Marlon Tuipulotu, IDL, USC: Amazing run stuffer and 3-4 base end type who can do 3-tech too.
18) Marvin Wilson, IDL, Florida State: another very good run stuffer and who has a ton of power.
19) Levi Onwuzurike, IDL, Washington: explosive 3-tech who would replace Butler. Still learning pass-rush moves but plays a lot like Adam Butler.
20) Osa Odighizuwa, IDL/Edge, UCLA: He is an explosive guy who could be a smaller base end, edge, 3-tech, or IDL.

Interesting - I'll have to check with 'the judge' to see if we pay off 10x if a player is named ten times and picked once...

Kind of a placeholder. Didn't feel the need to add any TEs with what we already have. So, weird to say after the last couple years.

Fields, Justin QB OSU: Watching tapes of his pocket awareness is a little frightening but the talent overall is undeniable.
Mond, Kellen QB T A&M: If they don't go QB in the first I see them going with Mond. I think his arm is better than he's given credit for.
Gainwell, Kenneth HB Memphis: Electric football player. Might be redundant if they're all in on JJ Taylor.
Collins, Nico WR Michigan: Big athletic WR that was underutilized in college.
Imatorbhebhe, Josh WR Illinois: Has size, strength speed and ridiculous athletic ability. Needs coaching.
Fehoko, Simi WR Stanford: I think you're probably seeing a trend in my WR selection.
Adams Jr., Jonathan WR Ark St: See above.
Jenkins, Teven OT OK St: We've all seen the tape.
Forsythe, Stone OT Florida: Swing tackle who could develop into a starter on either side.
Hoge, Tristen G BYU: Strong, mean and versatile. His chin alone could take on oncoming defenders.
Barmore, Christian NT Alabama: Disruptive interior defensive linemen. Exactly what this defense needs.
Tufele, Jay DT USC: Everything I've seen and read about this kid he plays like he gets shot out of a cannon every snap.
Rashed Jr, Hamilcar DL Oregon: Athletic and relentless. Needs coaching to refine technique.
Toney, Shaka DL Penn St: The forgotten Penn State pass rusher. Undersized for DE/EDGE but not LB. High athleticism and motor.
Collins, Zaven LB Tulsa: Can literally do it all from the LB position.
Moses, Dylan LB Alabama: Read a review that called him a heat seeking missile. Yes.
Brown, Shakur CB Mich St: Tough corner with great ball skills.
Samuel Jr, Asante CB FSU: His dad was one of my favorite players. Oh, and this kid is pretty good too.
Thompson, Tariq S SD St: Ballhawking safety. Would be great mirroring TE's as he's quicker than he is fast.
Breeze, Brady S Oregon: Pretty much just the name. Reminds me of Larry Izzo.

2 pts this year in "part 1,' plus another 5 in 'part 2' if (as was the case with Asiasi) you pick makes the initial 53. Asiasi got you 3 last year, but @SMU_Sox (rightly, IMO) wanted to shift focus on the guys who are most likely to have a real role with the team.

Edit - sorry, responding to @Mugsy's Jock . @Eck'sSneakyCheese, thanks for your comments. Another Larry Izzo would be great!

I know you love Fields. Would you rather trade up at greater cost and get Fields or trade up at slightly lesser cost to get Lance?
I think there is an argument that there isn't that big of a gap between Fields and Lawrence and I am prepared to die on that hill for my Fields. Like Lamar he has become my favorite player in the draft. Now he won't be my top ranked guy... but Fields is my adopted son.

Depends on the greatness of the cost and what you mean by slightly lesser. I see both guys as potential top 5-10 at their position so I would give up a future 1st to get one of them back. I think though I would rather give up more to take Fields. You can't teach that kind of accuracy. You can't teach that kind of build and ability as a runner. Oh and unlike other dual-threats you could make an argument he hung in the pocket too much and could have scrambled more!

With Lance I think you can improve his accuracy enough that combined with his processing and ability to run he can be like a Cam Newton in his prime.

Don't get me wrong - these are QBs. They are fraught with risk. But not many QBs coming out have their talent and skillsets.

So I guess the right answer is to pay less for Lance and to have resources to spend at other positions like OT, IDL, RB, and CB. It just depends on how much is greater cost and slightly less.

For example if I can get Lance for 15, 46 and a future 2 and I can get Fields for 15, 46, and a future 1 I would just take Fields. However if it is 15 46 and a future 1 for Fields vs 15, 96, and a future 2/3 for Lance I would take Lance.

@mwonow I dropped both Fields and Lance. I know this is stupid but I feel like I have to keep my expectations in check and not list them. But yeah... love those two and you all might need to send a medic to my place if they draft either guy (especially Fields) because I might die of happiness right then and there.

Pats offering a signed jersey if you can guess their first pick right. LOL good luck. I chose Horn.
I love how it's who they will "pick first" ...just in case they trade out of the first round

So obviously I am paying very close attention to your list (not for the contest - to better understand who they might pick), but I don't think I see a single first round guy on your list and maybe only a couple of second round guys. Given the structure of the point system, I would have expected you to list a couple more top prospects, but maybe you're going for the quantity over quality approach?

I might swap Fields out, but I'm keeping Lance (& my new avatar until someone else drafts him).

I think my list had a filter on when you looked at it. I don't do grades but if you translate my evaluation grade to a round valuation:

8+ = 1st Round. I have 21 first rounders
7.99-7.75 = 1st-2nd Rounders. I have 16 of those.
7.5-7 = 2nd rounders. I have 18 of those.
6.99-6.5 = 3rd rounders. I have 40 of those.
6.49-6.0 = 4th or 5th round grade. 59 of those.
5.99-5 = 6th or 7th round grade. 50 of those.
4.99-4.0 = PFA. 26 of those.
3.99-0 = UDFA or undraftable. 13 of those.

I still put guys I think could start even into the 5's especially if they are scheme dependent. Once you get into the 4's it's PFA and PFA's get drafted as high as the 5th, 6th, and 7th rounds.

No, I meant in your 20 picks for the contest

Edit I realize my first post was confusing - I meant I was paying attention to your list of 20, not to poach names for the contest, but to help me understand who you think they might pick, especially in round 3 and beyond.

I think they need at least one and possibly even two offensive tackles, one or two CBs maybe an inside and outside guy and an outside guy, at least one and potentially 2 RBs, and one or two IDLs. Maybe a 3-tech penetrating type and maybe a true base end. Trying to hit on those 4 positions. Going day 2-3. Also... I like the challenge of it.

They might also go OG/OC depending on how they feel about Onwenu and given Karas is only under contract for one year.

Spreadsheet now includes all entries since the last update. Zaven Collins is the runaway leader as most popular pick, included in 11 of 17 (!) submissions. Jaycee Horn (9), Justin Fields (8) and Teven Jenkins (8) are also on about half of current entries, and Barmore, Eskridge, McNeil, Elijah Moore and Parsons have each been tabbed six times.

If you're still thinking about entering - please do it soon! The draft starts on Aril 29, so we'll cut this off on the 28th at midnight. Good luck to those who are in, and those still lurking!

I'll give this a try for the first time. I tried to take a couple of shots at each slot. Let me know if the format is too annoying, I can edit it:

Round 1 (15)
1. Parsons, Micah, LB, Penn State - I've realized that I overrate character concerns.
2. Collins, Zaven, LB, Tulsa - makes too much sense

Round 2 (46)
3. Onwuzurike, Levi, DL, Washington - A DT who doesn't get a lot of sacks. May not have enough run awareness, though
4. Samuel, Jr., Asante, CB, Florida State - Come on! Two generations of Samuels!
5. Marshall, Terrace, WR, LSU

Round 3 (96)
6. Adebo, Paulson, CB, Stanford - not sure the Pats would take someone so inexperienced
7. McNeill, Alim, DL, Texas A&M - weight room fiend, short and stout

Round 4 (120, 122, 139)
8. Tonga, Khiris, DT, BYU - good testing, good tape
9. Odighizuwa, Osa, DL, USC - He's a wrestler!
10. Jaeleon Darden, WR, North Texas - going to be so great to watch wherever he ends up
11. Brown, Shakur, CB, Michigan State - has the right attitude, reportedly
12. Deablo, Divine, S/ST, Virginia Tech - @MuppetAsteriskTalk first with this pick, might be a consensus Board Binkie

Round 5 (177)
13. Bynum, Camryn, CB/S, Cal - football guy

Round 6 (188, 197)
14. Ehlinger, Sam, QB, Texas - can't resist the idea of the Pats taking him, even if Benjamin Solak calls him "not a prospect" as a passer.
15. Mitchell, Elijah, RB, Louisiana - his cousin (Brandon Mitchell) started at DT for the Pats in '01. Has ST experience.

Round 7 (242)
16. Williams, Avery - CB/ST, Boise State - special teams star

UDFA
17. Groshek, Garrett, RB, Wisconsin - walk-on HS QB who catches the ball, runs tough, and blocks well
18. Dunn, Isaiah, CB, Oregon State - surprisingly good testing numbers (8.92 RAS)
19. Anderson, Zayne, S/ST, BYU - special teams star in the making
20. Nwangu, Kene, RB/KR, Iowa State - quick and agile, KR experience but a backup RB

Edit: my goal is to get a point.
Second edit: I guess I can't get 1 point. Not the first time I ever set an impossible goal.

Thanks for this, I always like the explanations. And if I counted correctly, you picked 6-7 guys who are new to the list - not easy to do, with a total of 170 now named!

I went heavy on OL, DB, slot WR, and 3rd down back mostly because that's what I'm hoping they do. I tried to pick players that are versatile enough to play multiple positions and schemes and also shine on special teams, because BB values those types of players. I also don't want them to pay the price to move up at QB so I ignored the position completely. And I also ignored LB because I think they can wait until next year to add some new blood there. I'm hoping they take 6-8 players and add a bunch of picks in 2022 and 2023.

Thanks to @SMU_Sox and the other BBL draft experts that have posted so much interesting player analysis.

Deablo, Divine, S, Virginia Tech, Possible future starter with special teams chops
Hamlin, Damar, S, Pittsburgh, Depth piece with special teams chops
Holland, Jevon, S/CB, Oregon, Versatile can play multiple positions and schemes and has special teams chops
Joseph, Kelvin, CB, Kentucky, Physical and defends run well and possible skills to be a starting CB
Robinson, Aaron, CB, UCF, Slot corner versatile enough to play in multiple schemes
St-Juste, Benjamin, CB, Minnesota, Physical and defends the run well
Carter, Michael, RB, North Carolina, seems too obvious as the future premier 3rd down back
Gainwell, Kenneth, RB, Memphis, Probably a riskier choice for future 3rd down back
Horn, Jaycee, CB, South Carolina, Seems like he might be the best CB to fall to Pats at 15
Jenkins, Tevon, T, Oklahoma State, Everyone loves this guy so why not
Vera-Tucker, Alijah, T, USC, Athletic and versatile
Eichenberg, Liam, T, Notre Dame, Seems ready to step in as starting T in NFL
Christensen, Brady, T, BYU, Versatile enough to potentially start at G and viable backup T
Dickerson, Landon, C, Alabama, Along with Jenkins everybody loves this guy so why not
Green, Kendrick, G, Illinois, Versatile and can play C as well
Elijah Moore, WR, Mississippi, Premium prospect at slot receiver
Johnson, Cade, WR, South Dakota State, I think he can be the Pats future at slot
Darden, Jaelon, WR, Texas, Another potential future slot receiver
Brown III, Bobby, NT, Texas A&M, Possible future starting NT that could possibly start in different schemes but might have "motor" issues
Tonga, Khyiris, NT, BYU, Possible starting NT but seems less versatile than Brown III but has a much cooler name

Reassured by the above, I’ll stay on the sidelines this year as I’ve spent precisely zero hours thinking about any player other than which QB we need. Even if I had spent 20 or 30 hours on it I would still have no chance.

...but man, draft day can’t come soon enough!

Every year I get fooled into thinking that because I live in Australia the Patriots will come up on the clock sooner, but it’s always more than halfway through my workday. And I get sucked into believing that Bill will actually do something interesting - pick a player I have heard of - in the first round. And every year I’m disappointed. I really hope this year is different.

And thanks @mwonow for all your hard work every year. Good luck everyone!

My half-assed eyeballing is that at this point about half the lists include Fields or Lance... and I didn’t notice McCorkle (though easily could’ve skimmed past him)
