I'm having a really hatd time deciding what to do with this one.

On the one hand, it's Aaron Judge.

On the other hand, it's kind of cool to be one of only 5 people on the planet with something.

I was poking around looking at prices a little today. Why is the Randy Johnson Upper Deck rookie seemingly so relatively cheap? I started looking and expected it to be $1000+

I figured that but Griffey’s is 10x his. Griffey may have been a better player but not that much better.

Mickey Mantle is arguably not a top 10 baseball player of all time. There are certainly better players than him. And yet, his card is iconic and much more expensive than other cards of better players.

I’m 40 and that Griffey card dropped when I was 9. At the time I came of age, it was THE card that everyone wanted. Upper Deck packs were expensive as shit when I was 9. Like 4x the price of Topps. So Griffey was hard to obtain.

And people my age and + or - a few years have some emotional attachment to that card that’s not there for Big Unit.

Which is to say cards are more like art than stocks whose value is tied to fundamentals.

Truly, if I were buying cards I would buy the shit out of Ortiz, Nomar, Pedro, and Pedroia. Because in 10 years kids who were 9 when those teams were winning will be 40 and have disposable money - also from Boston a place with money - to blow on the heroes of their youth.

And if I could stomach it I would buy the shit out of Jeter and Rivera. I mean I would rather eat my dogs’ food but from an investment position a strong bet for the future.

Imagine when the Rock becomes president. I’ll regret not buying his U football cards.

Jeez. Topps Inception is like $140 retail a box for seven cards with one auto. I swear it was a lot cheaper even last year. but maybe my memory is faulty. The auto checklist does have some great names on it and the cards look great, but it's a big boom/bust box this time. That's kinda disappointing. Like if I put $140 bucks down and walked away with some of the autos on that list it'd ruin my day. Kinda wish if they were gonna jump that price up they might put two packs in the box or maybe a second exciting card in the packs.

I did throw one of the Heritage blasters in with a Target order I was gonna do today anyway. At this point I can't rely on just grabbing a pack at Target to scratch the itch so feels like it could be fun.

I don't know anything about anything when it comes to modern stuff but I was curious on this so took a look. It seems the autographs are on stickers, not on the card, and they've downgraded the patch cards from "Game Used" to "Player Worn". Not great Bob! The cards look pretty cool though...

That's one of the less fun transitions of the hobby for sure. A lot of these relics are just that: worn at a press event, possibly worn in game but who knows, completely fabricated in some extreme circumstances, given to a player to put on and take off and chopped up, etc. I do think some products still offer game used relics and it'll usually say game worn (premium products more often than not) but a lot are just that or even purely manufactured relics like coins.

I am having trouble finding it but a few years ago there was a picture going around of some NFL prospect (I think) with 9 jerseys on during one of these.

Considering the current market, Heritage is a hobby product that isn’t insanely priced.

im guessing it hasn’t experience the same inflation since it’s a product that’s never been about the big hit and has been geared toward set collectors.

You're 100% right, but Target already sold out. Resale prices won't be as crazy on these, but it was nice to see something at MSRP for once for sure.

Agreed. I mentioned a while back that walking into Target and finding anything to buy at this point feels like a win...getting something at msrp feels like a hit.

I miss not having the occasional box to open. I may have to pre-orde some Allen & Ginter. I noticed, like Heritage, that isn’t too insane. I tend to enjoy that product.

Good news, bad news! I dug through more of my old cards and found a few that are actually worth something. Bad news? The best is probably a Topps Gold Jeter rookie card. It seems to be minty new but unfortunately slightly off center.

I also found a couple Bowman Chipper Jones rookies and an Ivan Rodriguez as well. Not worth much because so many were printed but the Chipper is a decent looking card:

Always loved this card, and grabbed one the other day for a $1. Probably not even worth the dollar but Raines was one of my favorites and I just like the card.

2021 Donruss blasters and megas in stock at Target.com

I opened a box of Donruss over the weekend, and it was a lot of fun. Wish the cards were MLB licensed. The lack of logos really takes away from the cards. They've got some goofy insert designs, but that's part of the fun. When you hit on a "Big Sexy" Bartolo Colon name variation, it's actually kind of cool.

So I could use some help. I received my subscription box yesterday and I pulled two cards I would like to have graded (e.g., Herbert patch/auto numbered and Bobby Witt Jr auto numbered). I did some research on the PSA site, but I also wanted to post here.
One basic question I cannot seem to find answered is how do I find graded sleeves for larger cards (e.g., 260 pt.)?
I had purchased some Ultra Pro card holder sleeves, but they did not say "graded", is that still fine?

They don’t hold their value?
Yep, gorgeous cards but don't hold their value and it's super hit or miss based on the autograph you get which is always tough. Granted half the fun of this is just ripping packs and trading 150+ to open one pack with one hit is just not viscerally appealing. Like you get a hit great, but then you see a box where the signature is Daniel Johnson (Orange went for $29 on Ebay) and you just lost a hundred and change for 30 seconds of fun.

Edit: My bias of course. People buy up things like Signature Series or Dynasty which are single card boxes all the time.

Yeah, it's free. The $100 box is too rich for my blood, it's also $7 on the $20. (you can't get 2 $20's and the other cheap boxes are s/o)

oh ok. I have been trying to buy my kids some cards since Christmas and have gotten nothing so didn't feel bad about getting the hobby box

Yeah if you have plural kids, and either are getting the CTC or make too much to qualify for the CTC, this is a no-brainer, great parent, idea.

Yeah definitely makes no sense for the $20 box.

My kids, 8 and 10, are super into the idea of slowly amassing at least the 500 card set of Heritage, so it will be something we work on for a while. It helps that I love the look of the 1972 style.

Also, my kids still have more interest in the commercials during a sporting event than any sporting event itself, so hoping this piques their interest in baseball a bit, and just a fun tail end of covid project.

If anyone hears about any more Heritage boxes for sale, please post, it's been very helpful!

I picked up a Heritage Hobby Box today at my local as well. Will open it next week most likely.

Went against my better judgement and bought a Topps Archives Signature Series box as well. Ended up with a 1/1 Yuli Gurriel Rookie Auto, so it could have gone worse.

I held onto some select cards from my youth so that it wouldn't bite me in the ass like it did my Dad. I didn't even look at them for years, but with sports card becoming en vogue again, I decided to see if I owned anything valuable.

I have a few cards that seem like they could be valuable, but much of their value is tied to a PSA rating (?). For example, this Michael Jordan Hologram I own could be $1250 or $95. This Shaq rookie card could be $500 or $45. I don't know enough about collectibles to understand why there is such a drastic difference between the two prices

I kind of want to sell while the bubble's hot as I don't have a lot of sentimental attachment to these things. Is it worth getting them appraised? If it's impossible to get that high PSA rating, should I save the money and try to sell for the lower value?

Anyone know where I can get a printed price guide (not ebay/last 2 months online) for Leaf '91-94?

I checked the Beckett huge Annual and they only have '90, '49, and '60.
