Miguel has numbers on Wise, Bourne and Mills.

39542

39543

39544
Miguel claims the cap space (top 51) is $56.6 MM before accounting for Agholor, Anderson, Brown, Bethel, Davis, Godchaux, Henry, Judon, Jonnu.

I expect Bethel's number to be ~$1.7MM

There is also JC Jackson who remains tendered as a RFA, a gaping hole at C with Andrews still unsigned, and a K contract to be signed. Any guesses on the 2021 cap numbers for the new acquisitions?

My total spitball guesses:
Agholor $9MM (reported 2/$26)
Anderson $2.5MM (2/$7)
Brown $9MM (1/$11)
Davis $0.9MM (??)
Godchaux $6MM (2/$16)
Henry $8MM (reported 3/$37.5)
Judon $10MM (reported 4/$56)
Smith $9MM (reported 4/$50)

Keep in mind these 2021 numbers will replace 0.75MM cap numbers from the guys they replace as the 51st highest-paid players. They will also need ~$2.9MM for the draft and a slush fund for NLBTE and in-season acquisitions.

My guesses have to be way off, because that leaves $13MM in cap space. Where did I overestimate the new signees?

Assuming good health next year with all per game roster bonuses earned, those cap hits jump up pretty meaningfully in 2022. Judon goes from ~$6.4mn to ~$16.6mn and Smith from ~$5.7mn to ~$13.8mn. Cross your fingers the NFL makes out in the TV deal!

Ton of guys will be coming off the cap too though:
Gilmore, Hightower, Both McCourtys, Jules, Brown.
Part of some of this year's deals is replacing those guys with the next group of top paid guys a year early.

Seems like players are being "reasonable" in big signing bonuses, low salaries year 1 with the lowered cap.

Do we have any idea how many “easy” restructures there are? Seems like we’re backloading everything and there is still room for another big-ish deal.
I think they can buy a decent chunk by converting some of the Hightower and DMC salaries to bonuses, though to do that it’ll result in pushing some cap money into 2022. As it is, they’ve already got 6M plus for DMC on the books for 2022 because of a void year they included in the extension he signed last year. If you push another 3M or so into 2022, then you’re looking at a pretty high cap number for him unless he plays for a very low salary, or you’ve got useless dead cap. Hightower makes more sense, but I don’t think Bill goes there unless absolutely necessary.

$36.6MM of space with DT Henry Anderson (2/$7), ST Justin Bethel (3/$6), OT Trent Brown (1/$11), DL Carl Davis (1/$0.9), TE Hunter Henry (3/$37.5) unaccounted for.

Also, thanks for the correction on the expected cap hit for draft picks.

Okay, I know Miguel is the person to listen to. Based on his above tweet, is there possibly any truth to this? At first glance, I thougt no, but then I realized Watson is only making $15.94M next season. Of course that balloons in 2022. I suppose part of the equation would be what is going back the Texans' way and coming off our books. For example, Gilmore has a $15M cap hit and a $7.67 dead cap hit.

(There is obviously a thread to talk about the feasibility of a Watson trade from an asset perspective. I just wanted to know if it's realisitc financially, and this seemed like the right place.)

Let’s see.

Wild ass guesses:
Anderson-$2.5
Bethel-$1.8
Davis-$.75
Brown-$10
Henry-$5.25
Rookies/UDFA-$3

total: $23.3–Leaving around $13M

Still need a C though and I don’t see how Howe’s take that they have $35-$40M makes sense. Miguel has them at $36M before those 5 guys and rookies hit.

overthecap (I know, not miguel) seems to put us at 21 million in cap remaining....if accurate, def enough for the draft, a few more small pieces, and maybe a medium sized one if it makes sense. but i feel like if we were to really go all in on a big piece, like a watson or something else, there may need to be another restructure or two for some more breathing room.

overthecap is at least high on Trent Browns' contract. They have his Raiders # of 14M, but it was reported he reworked it to 11M and a bunch of that is probably NLTBE so his cap hit will likely be even lower.

Edit: They also aren't assuming a RFA tender for JC Jackson. I'd guess a 2nd round tender, but Miguel has them at a 1st round tender in his calculation, so that's 3-4m in space that will get eaten up today too on overthecap's page.

That's still plenty of room, even after accounting for draft picks.

Unless BB plans to roll some over, they should have more than enough to sign Andrews and more DL/RB help.

This morning Miguel has the Pats with $29M in cap space, without accounting for Brown, Bethel, or Davis. But including $3M for 2021 draft picks.

View: https://twitter.com/patscap/status/1372190339625328641?s=20

Waiting on the details for three contracts 1.) Trent Brown 2.) Justin Bethel 3.) Carl Davis
He went on to add that overthecap has Brown at a $14M cap hit, but he doesn't buy that.

Over the Cap has Trent Brown on the Patriots roster with a $14M cap hit. Doubt it will be true. Expect to be lower since the Patriots use active roster bonuses and he was only active for 5 games in 2020. How much lower? We will see.

$29.1MM in space.

Bethel should subtract a net $1MM or so.

Just need to account for Trent Brown and Carl Davis and $3MM for the draft.

They can definitely fit another big contract.

That assumes they utilize their draft choices. If they're traded out for futures, or an established player, that could affect that number, couldn't it?

So $29.1 available:

Brown: maybe $8?
Karras: maybe $3?
Bethel: maybe $1.8?
Davis: maybe $1?

So, that's around $14M. Still leaves in neighborhood of $15M.

So he doesn’t do estimates...but he does assumptions
Yeah, that's weird. I appreciate being able to go there and get the actual info easily, but you can find that other places. Using his knowledge to estimate, I think, provides more of a service.

You have to think BB is holding some of that back to match JC Jackson's potential offer sheet, no?
Sure--and he knows what his limit is. The way some of these are structured his actual deal could be cheaper against the cap than the tender.

Doubtful. I think he’d take the second round pick.
Maybe. And then the restructure Gilmore.

Yeah, I find that odd.
I'm assuming (uh-oh) he means that, for tangible contracts that have been signed, he's going to go by the actual data instead of the estimated info reported in stories. For hypothetical draft picks, it's safer to assume we'll fall in a certain range barring a significant trade due to slotting. The error band for FA contracts is much wider than for draft picks.

How would the remaining cap suit a Gilmore extension?

[I'm Mugsy's Jock, and I do estimates.]
Well, I’d assume if something gets done it likely lowers this year’s hit unless they know they’re done spending.

Disappointed in the Lee news. Was hoping he could be part of the solution

Seems like the 2 net about 2 1/2 mill in cap savings
I'm more bummed about Beau Allen, who I think could have been super helpful. Oh well....
