That phrase has been around for as long as I can remember (e.g. playground pickup basketball). It just means to play it again with the same team members (or mostly the same core group in the case of a large NFL team). Whether you can repeat as champions - or even won a championship in the first place - is irrelevant. But it is used more often with teams which have had past success, for obvious reasons.
Right, 'cause per Julian Edelman it seems the NEP will be doing some "running it back" this year, too:

For those bemoaning what the Patriots did at WR ... beyond Corey Davis, no one else is off the board. The contracts are either going to be nuts, or the player/agents aren't likely what they're hearing

Depends on how you view "biggest". I would say K is up there. Unless you're counting on Rohrwasser. But there's basically crap for free agents. May have no choice but to bring Folk back.
Folk was 26/28 last year and perfect inside 40, plus 30/33 XP. Nothing wrong with bringing him back

Lawson is a very good pass rusher, and you gotta pay good dollars for that.

Note: Insert your daily ‘sacks are a mediocre barometer for pass rushing success’ PSA here.

Q. Why in the world aren't the Bengals focusing on the offensive line?

A. Because they're the Bengals.

So that means the Pats could also have gotten creative like that and still have a good chunk available depending on how they structured some of the deals today?

But why would they want to? They have the space now, I would think they would go the opposite way and front load stuff so they will also have cap space in the future.

You're probably right. But maybe they think this year presents a special opportunity in FA and they want to load up as much as possible.

Since this is a game thread, I would like it known that I am being placed on IR tomorrow with blisters due to refreshing all of the threads in this forum today. I. Can’t. Get. Enough.

Going into today, I was expecting the Patriots to sign a bunch of players to one or two year deals with the idea that the players would want a chance to be a free agent again when the salary cap went back up.

I wonder if, instead, the Patriots took advantage of this year's outlier salary cap to sign players to three or four year deals, with the idea that when the salary cap gets reset in a couple years, the contracts they signed this off season will not be as onerous.

Everyone they signed is young, too. So they are not selling out the future for this year.

Yeah, Mike Reiss made a similar point earlier

Remember, the cap dropped to $182.5 million this year. It was $198.2 million in 2020, so this marked the first drop since the collective bargaining agreement of 2011.
Because of that, it thinned the field of teams the Patriots were competing against for free agents because many teams were scrambling just to get under the cap. That sweetened the free-agent pool, making players in the prime years of their career available who might have otherwise not hit the market; consider that Smith and Bourne are 25, Godchaux and Mills are 26, Agholor is 27 and Judon 28.
So with an abundance of salary-cap space to work with, and knowing the cap is going to spike in the coming years because of new television broadcast deals, Belichick and the Patriots went all-in like never before.

So which national reporter has already* made the "Belichick knew/created Covid to help with his cap shenanigans once he knew Brady was gone?" article without tongue firmly planted in cheek?

* just assume it's already been written considering how often the Patriots get blamed for everything

Was the Thuney thread deleted / merged? Seems like the Chiefs better win it all in 2021 or 2022 because they are going to be in cap hell soon.
Nah. The Saints had arguably the best roster in football 4 years running and everyone said the same thing. Now all they're doing is letting go of some good-not-great players and combined with some restructures they'll be compliant this year and probably have more than enough room to rebuild after Brees with the cap increase, all while keeping all of their best players. If Brees were still Brees and hadn't retired, they'd contend again in 2021. As long as Mahomes is there they'll be fine and the roster around him will likely be good enough, there's no real precedent of a team with great QB play not contending because of cap issues, is there?

As a Raiders guy I’m fucking lost on this one.
This is exactly how I felt when Mookie Betts was traded.

It’s gonna hurt twice when he signs back in KC.

And yes, I know it makes sense to pay Andre James $2M to be 85% of the player they were paying Hudson $13M to be. And yes, they had the most expensive OLine in the league that was rated 18th by FO.

Fucking Gruden and his ten year contract.

They better be spending the offensive line savings wisely on WR and defense. And sign Long.

Damian Williams released by KC following his 2020 COVID opt-out.

Potential budget White replacement?

The saints were up and down during the Brees era, and it was arguably cap related. The chargers and falcons have both spent a lot of time as average teams despite having top five or ten QBs--and had persistent cap issues.

I feel like Sanders has taken more punishment than any receiver this side of Anquan Boldin. Anytime I see him play, he’s getting rocked in the head. Tough dude I wish we’d gotten years ago.

I think they may have done that with Mankins, too. Hightower was lucky and got cupcakes from the Jets as a sweet bonus.
