Hey! Someone I know about.

Godchaux is a very solid 2 gap DT. Plays the run very well. Doesn’t get a ton of TFLs or sacks, but he’s stout. Miami let him walk because he was a bit redundant with Wilkins, Sieler, and Davis all taking those snaps once he went down.

His Wikipedia picture is him batting in what looks like a celebrity softball game. I’m a fan

He was the Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee from the Dolphins in 2019/2020.
Godchaux should be an example for others to follow. In other places, you will see Godchaux giving time and money.
  • Girls Flag Football Jamboree that was presented by Nike.
  • Hope to Dream Sleepover which provides 100 beds to youths who do not have beds.
  • His House Children’s Home back to school shoe shopping spree.
  • Partnership with Microsoft to provide computer coding opportunities for at-risk youth.
  • Boys and Girls Clubs and TruPrep Academy where he mentors kids about making positive choices.
  • Special Olympics youth football clinic.
  • AMI Kids, a school for at-risk kids who’ve been kicked out of schools.
  • Thanksgiving meal and holiday toy distributions.
  • Mentoring program for teens 13-19 in his home town of Plaquemine, LA.
  • Mentors a youth football player at Miami Carol City High School
  • Play 60 Virtual Field Trip.

Is he a guy that could play Nose Tackle in a 3-4? Or does this indicate more traditional 4-3? Or just not mean shit in general for either?

Me too - I think they come back with a new front 7. I like this signing a lot. They need DTs who can stop the bleeding with the run + they get younger there.
If Beau Allen finally gets healthy, we're in business.

Draft a young DL with the 2nd rounder and there's your revamped front 7.

P. S. Bringing back KVN would be bonus.

Not when you couldn't stop the run.
I'm not saying he's a bad fit, or that the Pats don't need a guy like him, just that there are a lot of run stuffing DTs out there, many who likely end up getting less than $8 million per given cap challenges around the league. Godchaux has been a solid, but not spectacular player through his career thus far - is he that much of an upgrade over guys who will make $3-4 million next year?

Belichick has signed plenty of guys in the 3-4 MM range to be run stuffers through the years, so clearly he does think there's something about Godchaux to make him worth twice that.

He's not getting $16M guaranteed, so thinking about what his cap hit is without knowing the specifics doesn't really get us anywhere yet.

Never would have guessed the guy handing out the contract thought he was worth it. Just saying from the outside, it strikes me as somewhat expensive for a guy who appears to be an above average run stuffing DT with no pass rush to speak of, that's all.

unless the extra $7M is highly unlikely incentives, this feels like a significant overpay looking at the DT signings around the league in recent years I mean... DTs who don't rush the passer usually don't get paid much, and Godchaux shouldn't be considered anywhere near the top tier.
2/12 with 5-6M guaranteed seems more like what similar players have gotten recently. $9M guaranteed is pretty high.

If Shelby Harris - a better run defender who can also rush the passer - is only getting 3 years, $27 million then I certainly hope the base value for Godchaux is well below the stated 2 years, $16 million.

Harris at the nose? He’s giving 20 plus pounds to most guys at that position, which is probably why Denver didn’t line him up there. Godchaux can play over center.

Different varieties of apple we are talking about here.

I'm not saying that Harris was an option for the Pats, just that he has a much more valuable overall skill set and signed for only $9 million/year which again makes me question the price tag for Godchaux. Kenny Golladay can't play TE, but if he signed for 5 years and $70 million I would question the value on the Jonnu Smith signing...

You keep taking the AAV and assuming that’s actually what we’re paying. Do you think Tayson Hill is really getting $140M over next 4 seasons?

There's not a ton of money to hide in a 2 year deal. I'm fully aware we don't know the details on contract structure which is why when making the comp to the Harris deal I specifically said "I certainly hope the base value for Godchaux is well below the stated 2 years, $16 million."

He only played 5 games last year. It would be easy to structure a deal with NLBEs based on roster bonuses. They can probably get this year's cap hit to under 5 million easily and have a decision to make next year.

Edit: I forgot the guaranteed money was released. I'll wait for the exact details but 5 million is probably unrealistic. 6-6.5 year one is probably about right.

$9M vs. 14.4M in guarantees would make the same point though, $9M is a big guarantee for Godchaux.
Now maybe the way it's structured he basically has the same floor and ceiling, and the other $7M are really unlikely incentives, but $9M is a big guarantee.

They can certainly get the 2021 cap number down, my point was that you can't have a lot of fake money in a 2 year deal. If they cut him after next season, they will have paid $9 million for 1 year. More important than NLTBE incentives for cap purposes will be the actual performance based part of the deal.

Were picking nits. $7m a season is outside the top 25 for defensive tackles. If he cracks all his incentives, he'll have been well worth the $14m, and he'll be underpaid. If he doesn't, his contract isnt sinking the roster, and it's over next season.

$7m a season for 2 seasons? People are making mountains out of mole hills.

Hopefully he can afford a new tailor. That jacket is wrong on like three different levels. And I'm not happy about the red, but that seems to be an intentional choice, so god bless.

And then maybe an interior designer.

Clearly he's 100% focused on football, just the way Belichick likes it.

I can't argue with the jacket, but my guess is that that picture was taken in some generic mini-conference room at Gillette. I can't imagine Godchaux would have an enlargement of a wide shot of a sold-out Gillette, and a book called "Patriots United," in his house already, no matter how much he might have wanted to look like he was sucking up.

'New tailor' was my first thought too. But another is, is 311 really heavy enough for a NT? The guys who have been great at it in NE - Ted Washington, Big Vince - were *a lot* bigger than that.

Yes, Mills or one of the other FA signings had a pic from the same room.

That's how much Covid has changed my life, that I just assumed the contract signing was remote.
