EDIT: Already covered above.

I'd be thrilled if Kiper is correct and Lance is still available at #9 and the Pats trade up.

For s&g, in his mailbag today Kyed was asked to rank these 10 quarterbacks in order of most likely to be on the Patriots next season. here's what he came up with:

1. Marcus Mariota
2. Jacoby Brissett
3. Cam Newton
4. Mac Jones
5. Jimmy Garoppolo
6. Trey Lance
7. Ryan Fitzpatrick
8. Mitch Trubisky
9. Justin Fields
10. Zach Wilson

No Kyle Allen or Minshew in Kyed's top 10? Mariota at #1 seems way off. He would have to be signed post-release, and even then I bet another team would pay Mariota more than the Pats.

Which begs the question, why is Stidham even taking up a roster spot at this point?

Has Minshew been rumored to be available? He seems like he could be a solid Top 15 guy you could get a WC spot with.

He's cheap, knows the system and has a few skills. He fills a backup slot at worst. I'm fine dedicating resources to other positions of need instead of a potential upgrade to that spot.

I can't imagine the Pats have a high opinion of Jacoby considering the trade. Brissett was still super young, and the return wasn't great.

I don't think it's even that its.... he's under contract, why bother cutting him now if he has no upcoming bonuses and you have no need to open the roster spot. You'll need 3 QBs for camp anyway so if you don't add 3 this offseason worst case you can have him there to throw to guys before you cut down to 2 QBs for the season.

Not sure it has much to do with him---Kyed was asked to rank 10 QBs not on the roster. That doesn't mean Stidham as a cheap backup isn't in their plans.

Yeah, it was mentioned in the Globe today that Brissett did not mesh with McDaniels or BB. Does not seem like he would be an option — thankfully.

I remember the story the day of the Falcons Super Bowl that the team allowed Brissett to dress pregame even though he was inactive as a sign to show how happy they were with him. I guess things could have gone sour the next offseason and training camp preceding the trade.

I recall that the Pats coaching staff was at first quite happy with how Jacoby handled himself being pressed into service after JG got hurt, and how he plugged through the Bills game when he played with a broken throwing hand.

During the subsequent training camp, there was some chatter about how the Pats coaches were disappointed in his lack of progress, as the team really focuses on the 2nd year as being key to their ultimate success in their system. And they were quick to trade him for a depth receiver at a time when Garappolo was playing out his contract and unlikely to be around by the end of the season.

Jeff Howe's The Athletic piece about the state of NE's QB search. Essentially just confirms that Bill's been hunting, but prices are sky-high and there's not desire to overpay at the moment.
This is the only thing that makes sense for them. In this year's market you grade the guys and group them by tiers. For all of the reasons outlined in this thread it is highly unlikely that the Patriots get a top tier guy like Watson or Lawrence. The question then becomes what happens in the draft. Do they view one of these guys as someone they can build around? And if not, you look to guys like say Minshew after the draft.

The Patriots won't set the market here. Prices will come down when things get real at or near draft time. They are not going to be the market setters here. Chips will start falling and then they pounce.

As much as it would be an offensive disaster for Cam to be the guy again, it makes all the sense in the world for the Pats to imply that they are fine with it.

John Clayton has report out that Fitzpatrick leaning towards retirement.

This is not good news for the Pats as the QB supply withers and the tumblers seem to be lining up for Cam Newton's return.

I doubt the Patriots were even considering Fitz, he seems the exact type of player Bellichick doesn't like at QB.
I am guessing Fitz looked around, his agent made some calls, and there wasn't a team willing to let him start and so now he's got to decide whether he wants to be a backup again or call it.

Whether the Patriots would consider him or not, it's one less potential starter on the market and it hurts their search. He's not a longterm starter, but he is a viable part of a stopgap starter/draft project QB pair.

Rapsheet throwing cold water on Clayton's report...

For whatever it’s worth: Former #Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, 38, does plan on playing in 2021, and he should have a solid FA market for his role. There’s been some public debate about his future, but he does intend to play this year.

Sounds like some agent spin gone bad.

"These offers are too low. We'll let teams think retirement is an option! That will get them motivated!

...

Shit. Teams think hes not committed to football anymore and pulled their offer. Better right the ship..."

Between here and everywhere.
Don’t know the source, but DC radio this morning mentioned WFT having interest in Newton.

I wasn’t paying super close attention, so I didn’t hear much more than that.

A few days ago, an article in the WaPo sports section mentioned WFT’s possible interest in Newton, but I don’t think it was anything more than due diligence on the writer’s part. Teams without an identified starting QB will be linked to most available free agents, if only to gain clicks.

Kyed, who's clearly bored, runs through roster scenarios for various QB options

https://nesn.com/2021/03/patriots-offseason-blueprint-potential-qb-options-free-agency/
I was interested in Samuel but holy shit is it just me or does this projection seem enormous for a guy who's more of a gadget piece?

The Patriots need wide receiver help, so let’s add Curtis Samuel on a four-year deal worth $50 million as projected by Spotrac.com. He could carry an $8 million cap hit in 2021.
I think I'd rather have John Brown or Agholor in a vacuum on more reasonable projected deals.

How is he a ‘gadget’ piece? Cordarelle Patterson is a gadget piece.

Samuel catches a lot of passes as a conventional receiver, can run the ball if needed (40 carries last year), and is entering his age 25 season. Kyed’s projection is absolutely reasonable for a guy his age, production, and explosiveness. He ain’t Tyreek Hill, but who is?

On John Brown, a speed guy coming off a down year and entering his age 31 year carries some risk that the guy may be near the end, and for a team like the Pats who desperately need long term solutions (in addition to any solutions, granted) at WR that kind of ‘bargain’ might not be the right play.

Looks like a real breakout candidate to me (if last season wasn't one already). Has trended up every season and managed to rack up 1000 YFS despite playing alongside two 1000+ yard receivers..

does this change much? We need a backup QB, he's better than Hoyer and Stid. Cam wasn't going to get a starting job anywhere. Maybe we will still be in on "every single available" QB and let Cam compete for the job. I'm guessing the cost is nothing and we can cut him easily
Hopefully this means they'll be going strong on a QB in the draft.

Trey Lance pro day on NFLN right now....
My pipedream is one of Wilson/Lance/Fields and in particular Fields is my guy, hence my SOSH avatar.

But let's say they don't grab one of those guys. After I have a good cry or two I would direct my attention to: Mac Jones, Kyle Trask, Jamie Neman, Kellen Mond, or Davis Mills. That is the next tier or two of QB. Personally I am intrigued the most by Newman as the athletic true dual-threat QB and Kyle Trask as the old-school pocket passer. Trask's biggest issue is his footwork. His below the waist mechanics screwup his ball placement and accuracy. He generally makes good decisions and reads things well. Trask though is a battleship and has even less mobility than Jones. That lack of mobility might sink him in today's NFL. Newman, OTOH, doesn't have any mobility issues but is slow to get the ball out. He seems like he is a slow processor. He has the arm and accuracy though. He also had a shitty supporting cast.

Mond is just inconsistent and he's an older prospect. He will have a few highlight throws but I am not sure his accuracy is great outside the numbers.

When I saw the news that Cam would be back my first thought was that Newman would be the perfect understudy. I watched a lot of his games at Wake and I think he would florish learning from Cam, Josh and BB. I don't believe Newman did well at the senior bowl and after opting out last season his stock has fallen. Do you think he will last until round 4 or might he be worth the 3rd round comp pick for the Pats?

Newman looked rusty because he has not played since last year. But Newman always looks like that. That’s half kidding and not. The rumor was that he wasn’t going to win the Bulldog’s starting job so he opted out. Not sure how true that is but I could see it.
Either way I think Newman goes end of the 3rd to early 4th. Predicting where QBs go is the hardest thing for the non first round crew. I think he slides into day 3 right now but who knows.

A guy who didn't play well at the senior bowl, always looks kind of rusty, and is rumored to be unable to win a starting college job might go end of 3rd round? What does he have going for him to compensate for those negatives? On the plus side, if he went to the Pats, I'd be very happy to mutter a Seinfeldian "Newman" after each completion...

He has a cannon of an arm, he is accurate to all levels of the field, and he’s athletic and a dual-threat as a QB. I think his processing issues were partly because his supporting cast didn’t get open but he has a ways to go with anticipation throws.

Quick note: I don’t know where Newman goes. And in general this year everyone’s boards are more all over the place than even last year. COVID has destroyed a lot of scout group think. So while I think he goes somewhere between 87-140 it is hard to know. Impossible even.

He's 6'4" 235 can run and has a huge arm.
Also, not being able to win the starting job at UGA doesn't necessarily mean much, since Fields lost out at UGA to Fromm, Burrow transferred when he couldn't win a job, Baker Mayfield, Russell Wilson, etc.

I mean... Tom Brady struggled to keep a starting job in College... like whether someone was the bonafide starter isn't really the be all end all of NFL QB play evaluation.

Brady also went in the 6th round, not the third. But the other examples make it clear that not starting at a big time college doesn’t sink your chances to be a high pick.

Thank you for the helpful replies. Clearly, I (should) plead the fifth on college ball, so the insight is much appreciated. So a tools guy perhaps lacking the ability to read and react quickly. The run/accuracy skills are interesting. Intriguing enough for me to hunt down some vids. Late pre-draft is just fascinating.

Yeah, I’m pretty much with you.

Thinking/hoping the target at this point is Fields or Lance and I slightly prefer Lance (coin toss, really). Because of their styles and how the money lines up, I can’t think of a better mentor for either of them than Cam Newton. As I said in the Cam thread, a nice ancillary benefit is that you don’t have to install another offense like you would if you got a traditional pocket passer.

Lance looked awesome yesterday. I went to Ohio State, so I’ve seen every snap Fields has taken. I’m a big fan, obviously.

Mike, I'm a complete college idiot. I havent watched a snap since the Leinart/Young bowl. What does Lance do well that you see translating to the next level?
