I think something like this makes a lot of sense. However, I worry about kids being exploited by their parents and others. I'm going to feel pretty terrible reading the inevitable stories of hot-shot 16 year-olds who gave up their HS eligibility and washed out of this league after a year with the $100,000 they were paid having gone "missing."

This is the money quote. If the players' education, living conditions, training, and preparation for something other than basketball have a prominent role in OTE's business plan and budget, then I don't really see this as a completely horrible idea. Especially given the continued fiction of "student athletes" clung to by college programs. On the other hand, the cynic in me sees OTE's pockets being the primary beneficiaries of its business plan and I wonder what will happen to the kids it spits out at age 18 who have no future in the pros.
