This summed up everything: NHL chief content officer Steve Mayer, the one overseeing the spectacle, was talking on the phone outside around 8 a.m. PT when he slipped on a patch of ice and hurt his right leg. He kept working through it all until 12 hours later, when he finally visited the X-ray tent.

Diagnosis: spiral fracture of the fibula.

In hockey terms, it was just a lower-body injury. He pulled his boot back over his swollen foot and hobbled to his station in time for the second period. Between the second and third, he was fitted for a walking boot and given crutches. He finished the game without missing a shift, and he'll be back Sunday too.

"It's unfortunate," he said, "but it's part of the game."

The capitalized "US" gave me a nanosecond hearth attack. Thanks, reg. :)
He did beat yoU guyS A lot.

Canadian College hockey is really good as good, or probably better than NCAA because the players are older. Almost all are guys that played major junior and either didn't get drafted by the NHL or saw the writing on the wall that the NHL was not calling. Guys play CHL for 4 years then go play college. The CHL pays one year tuition for each year they play. They are not eligible to play NCAA so virtually all that money is spent in Canada. To see the difference age makes, the Canadian World Junior team with Taylor Hall, Eberle, etc was beaten 7-1 by the Huskies in pre-tournament game. Babcock is a local guy and the Leafs made him rich, so I think he sees winning a national title here the ultimate local boy makes good thing to do. He has been pretty active helping coaches, working in the community, so it should be interesting. The recruiting certainly heated up.

Wow. That is a strong statement from the team. I'm going to assume (for now) they and Artemi have pretty solid proof that the accusations are false, because that statement is something that could come back to haunt them, and one that they probably could have held off on making.

Tough to prove the negative, but the source—his reportedly pro-Putin former KHL coach speaking out 10 years later?—is certainly enough of an eyebrow-raiser that they must feel pretty comfortable with the statement. Really tough situation for Panarin with family there still. We know how easy it is for people to fall out of windows in Russia.

Certainly a risk for the org though. I say that as someone who watched the Chris Benoit tribute episode of Raw.

Binnington pulled in San Jose tonight after giving up his 4th goal midway through the 2nd. Hard to blame him on two of them (a fluke deflection and an A+ screen), but he picked up a childish minor for unsportsmanlike on his way out for reacting to the Sharks chirping him. He's going to be great in Seattle.

No surprise, the Flames followed up that warm up session with a 5-1 loss to the Sens.

The Canadian Division is full of tire fires. Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary are all disasters.

And then the Oilers proceeded to get shutout for the second straight game by a shitty back up Leafs goalie.
