Looks like for now Bruce is moving DeBrusk up to the #1 line and putting Pasta down on Krejci's right side.

"On Feb. 10, after missing five games because of a lower-body injury, Jake DeBrusk returned with a thunderclap. DeBrusk let loose with 14 pucks, seven of which struck the net. On Jan. 30, David Krejci assisted on Nick Ritchie’s power-play goal and recorded six shots of his own.

To Bruce Cassidy’s eye, these have been isolated spikes more than game-over-game consistency.

So in Monday’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena, the Bruins coach went to his break-glass-in-case-of-emergency maneuver: He busted up his No. 1 line.

DeBrusk moved to right wing next to Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. David Pastrnak moved down to the No. 2 line with Krejci and Nick Ritchie. The moves, Cassidy hopes, will nudge DeBrusk off his zero-goal output and express a more robust 5-on-5 presence out of Krejci.

“They tend to push whoever’s with them,” Cassidy said of Marchand and Bergeron. “So it could be a good arrangement. Krech has played before with Pasta. So it’s just a little bit of a different look. We’ve talked about doing it in the past. I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes.”

Lines would be
Marchand-Bergeron-DeBrusk
Ritchie-Krejci-Pastrnak
Bjork-Coyle-Smith
Frederic-Kuraly-Wagner
I hate this. Why screw with the lines? They aren’t struggling to score(outside of scoring first), there has been no consistent combination that has looked bad. And obviously why break up one of the top lines in hockey just because you can? Chemistry is so much more important here than any sport and they have it in spades.

But if you have to do it, I would so much rather see Pasta with Coyle and Smith. That line would be so much fun to watch

edit: yes I know Pasta is on the same side as Smith, but if we are going to get crazy let’s go all in

I think it’s worth trying. We’ve seen the results of only having one line going in the postseason.

I get it, but this isn’t the same team. Ritchie seems much more comfortable. I love the energy and skill Smith brings. Fredrick and Miller give them more teeth. If anything the Smith/Coyle pairing to me seems more like a second line most of the time. I view this team much deeper.

It’s also the timing. This team has lost twice in regulation. If they were on a 3 game skid sure shake it up for game or two. But no line has stood out as needing a boost

Then again, they are cruising so it might be the best time to experiment. But really shake it up then. Personally I really want to see what Coyle and Smith would do with a high end line mate.

I have successfully argued for and against myself

This sounds like a message to Debrusk. Bergeron and Marchand might be able to motivate/fix him in ways that Krejci and his other-wing-of-the-week can't.
I don't know enough about nuts and bolts hockey to know what Debrusk's "problem" is, but my sense is that, for better or worse, Cassidy is about out of patience.

It’s too bad that he has a Foxwoods ad on the facade of the first balcony, considering that Foxwoods opened in 1992, 7 years after the Garden shut down.
Not true. The old Garden closed its doors for good in 1995. And if I recall correctly, there was a Foxwoods sign in it before it closed.

While details are important, for someone (like me) that went to Bs games at the old Garden, which I loved and through which (among other venues) I learned to absolutely despise the Habs, that labor of love is touching regardless. Being a fan of that form of table hockey, I'd love to play on his creation, if only to send a puck reeling into Ken Dryden's mask.

I disagree. They are struggling to score. They've scored 40 real goals this season (subtracting the 2 the league gave them for shootout wins), only 21 of those have come at 5x5. The 21 5x5 gpa;s is the 4th lowest total in the league putting them in company with Dallas, Buffalo and New Jersey who have lost large chunks of the season to COVID. Marchand and Bergeron have been on the ice for 10 of the goals for, so roughly half the offensive production has come from 1 line. Anders Bjork is actually 4th on the team behind Marchand, Bergeron and Pastrnak having been on the ice for 6 goals for in his 14 games. Good for Bjork, but a bad sign for everyone else The middle two lines aren't doing anything. Krejci's been on the ice for 4 goals for. Ritchie has 10 points, 7 of which have come on the power play. It's wonderful to have an elite PP (which it has been until the last 3-4 games) but it's hard to win in the playoffs relying on a power play. Whistles tend to get swallowed up that time of year. They are 10-2-2 because they had the elite PP and they are elite defensively, having only given up 21 5x5 goals themselves. They just have to get the offensive side of the ledger up.

They need to get something going at 5x5 so Bruce is trying things. They'll always have 63-37-88 in their back pocket and I'm sure they'll be right back together in a few games. The Krejci line hasn't been settled all year due to injury. They seem to like Ritchie there but the RW is a bit of a merry-go-round. They brought Smith in with the idea of playing him with Coyle. We haven't really seen a ton of that due to the various injuries on the right side. Dropping him back down leaves a vacancy for Krejci. Bruce has said a bunch of times that Krejci prefers a right shot RW, so that limits their options. Pasta goes down to fill that spot which then leaves DeBrusk without a home. It's either him or Bjork on the big line. They went DeBrusk.

Another issue on the goal scoring front is the defense. They have contributed 3 goals thus far. 1 from McAvoy, 2 from Carlo. The defense has 24 points on the season, 11 of which belong to McAvoy. Nobody else has more than 3. At some point they're going to need more from the back end. With the kids, the plan was always to take care of their own end first and then as they play and gain experience try to build in more offense. We'll see how that goes. They also haven't had Grzelyck for the bulk of the season,. He's not an offensive maven but he's their 2nd best defenseman and is mobile and adept at pushing the puck up ice and distributing. Getting him back, whenever that happens, should help too. Right now any offense from the back end comes from McAvoy. Lauzon and Zboril show flashes here and there but by and large they're sitting back making safe plays.

I just used it an an excuse to comb over hundreds of old pictures of the Garden, which was an awesome wormhole for this morning :)
Glad to help.

Back in the 70's, my Dad has a friend who was the local butcher. Every Saturday morning, he and I would go to this guy's shop to pick up all our meats for the week. We would sit in the back for an hour while he carved meats. He would always give me a slice or two of whatever deli meats we were getting that week to munch on right there. Anyway, this guy was a die-hard Bruins fan and season-ticket holder. He would grill me every week on Bruins trivia. Between him and my Dad, I learned the names and numbers of every retired Bruin. He would give us a pair of his tickets every year. His seats were directly behind the goal about 30 rows up. My vague memory is that I lays hoped a puck would make it over the screen, but I don't know if that would have been possible.

You must mean the plexiglass. I don't think screens were added in NHL areas until after the death of Brittanie Cecil in 2002.

Maybe? My foggy recollection was that there was a screen, sort of like behind home plate, that went from the top of the Plexiglas, up and back some 20 rows or so. My memory from childhood was that some puck would end up behind us but never near us.

As usual with cshea, I agree with all of this. Looking to the playoffs, we need to be better at 5x5 scoring and can't be consistently playing from behind. I really don't think the goal scoring issue with the D will be fixed with the the current group, they need to be augmented at the deadline by a scoring D. Grz is injury prone and Lauzon, Zboril and Miller are making safe plays which is fine for them.

Totally understand and agree mostly. While I usually lean towards the data, there is something about the eye test for a couple of these guys where I'm not as worried as the numbers are showing. I love the chemistry between Coyle and Smith, I think they should have had a couple more goals. There is also the fact that Pasta was out half the games, and that will obviously put a dent in goals scored. Though the D isn't scoring goals, they are much more active in the offensive zone than in the past and have made a couple plays that lead to goals by playing low if the situation presents. I do worry that outside of McAvoy there is no real goal scoring threat on the backend.

Why? We're basically back to May levels with much more opened up. I can totally see this happening, especially with do many less susceptible people now.

The virus is endemic at this point. Life will start to move on whether we want it to or not.
Because nothing like it has been approved in MA. You may want it to happen, but I don't see them actually permitting it in MA.

NYC is allowing sports venues to reopen at limited capacity starting February 23rd:

https://abc7ny.com/arenas-reopening-arena-capacity-new-york-covid-vaccine/10326563/
It's certainly conceivable that Baker is considering doing something similar for Boston, and that Cassidy got word of that; the B's have been in pretty regular communication with Baker on CoVid protocols in general.

Whether it actually happens in NY, how long it remains in effect, and whether it actually happens in Boston all remain to be seen. Things can change quickly with this virus. As for whether it should happen is probably a topic for V&N, but nobody is going to convince anybody to change their current opinions on that topic.

I have no issue with them doing it. I just don't believe they will get it done. Happy to be wrong.

Some injury stuff...

Zboril and Miller may join the main group tomorrow. Seems like there's somewhat of a chance one or both could be back for Thursday's game, but it is a back to back so who knows.

Grz skated on his own. He's behind Zboril and Miller but is coming along.

Krejci was not on the ice.

Have not heard much on Kase. I thought he had begun light skating a week ago but no updates since. I missed Sunday's game but apparently Lauzon was injured. Didn't see any updates on him just yet.

Zboril returned to practice t oday and should be able to play tomorrow. Grzelyck did not practice but is apparently close and will travel with them on the road trip. Miller will not travel. He practiced yesterday but his knee was sore today so they're being cautious. There was no official update on Krejci, so I'm assuming he will miss the road trip as well.

Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak
Ritchie - Coyle - Smith
Bjork - Studnicka - DeBrusk
Frederic - Kuraly - Wagner

Vaakanainen - McAvoy
Zboril - Carlo
Moore - Clifton

It's a little window into the future, at least for a few games. Vaakanainen getting some run with McAvoy, and Studnicka getting his first opportunity at center at the NHL level. They could lose Lauzon or Zboril to Seattle with Vaak stepping in, and up front Krejci is a UFA so the most logical replacement internally is Studnicka.

Great news all around. Cannot wait to get back to going to games. Wonder if they’ll have similar stipulations like the Rangers have. NY you need a negative Covid test result from a swab 72 hours prior to the game. So, for example, if I want to go to this Sunday’s game I’d need a swab for me and family today and have the results in hand for Sunday along with an ID to prove we are who we say we are, kids included.

So, basically like 2,000 people right?

I can’t wait to wear my dad’s Kelly Green jersey to a game again. Not sure I will go, but I’ve been staring at that thing for over a year wanting to wear it to a game in his honor, and maybe I will be able to do that this year.

From what I read here and there on the Internet, Tinordi is a big, slow bruiser who has played three times as many games in the AHL than in the NHL. A career of two-way contracts.

My worry about the signing is that it may indicate Miller is going to be out for a long time and Sweeney wanted a big body who shoots left-handed — any big body who shoots left-handed.

And I’m sure that the one that you are referring to would have been happy to be a healthy scratch anytime there are less than 2 injuries on that side of the defense.

Or the more likely scenario is that it would become a huge distraction for the team.

Tinordi is what he is; a veteran plug that they can throw out there on D when there are injuries on the left side. Skill wise he probably sucks as bad as John Moore, but at least he can clear the front of the net. And when everyone is back he’ll be back on waivers again.

I would never expect a guy that was the captain of the team for 14 years and future hall of famer to except that role.

Moore is a million times better than Tinordi Kampfer too.

Don’t really get it. I know they are a little banged up but they don’t need another D. If it gets to that point, I’d prefer Ahcan. Maybe you’d catch lightning in a bottle. Tinordi is known hot garbage.

I bet he plays for the Briuns as much as Kampfer. He’s just a body that Bruce can point to to get the young kids to up their game. It’s more likely he ends up in Providence than playing meaningful minutes in the NHL.

Edit: I am not at all endorsing this move, and hope that Tinordi never sees the ice for the Boston Bruins. I was defending the move to not bring back Chara.

As an emergency bottom pairing defenseman for a game or 2 during this season of CoVid, Tinordi is fine. If it's anything more than that, then the Bruins have problems, but that would be true either with or without Tinordi.

Especially if they think Miller has reached the end of the line. With Lauzon also out for a few weeks, that has two of Moore, Clifton and Vaak. in the lineup every night. All three until Grz gets back. Skills aside, that's pretty thin numbers-wise.

Would be really disappointing if Miller is done, after battling so hard to come back, and play well when he was in there. The team line is still optimistic on the surface, but the fact that he already needs long stretches of load maintenance doesn't bode well for him being a reliable factor for the stretch run/playoffs.

I think best case is he plays 20 games and then needs 2 weeks off. That's a player that can be used. But I'm afraid it's more likely that next time back it's 10 games and then 3 weeks off and so on. It is too bad.

The Athletic's trade board for the upcoming trade deadline is out.

Deadline is 4/12. There's some chatter on how the pandemic will impact things. It could be pretty quiet, also could be more spread out than usual with teams doing business earlier due to quarantine hurdles (particularly Canadian teams).

I'm not too sure what the Bruins will be looking for, if anything. D would be nice but the market seems rather thin. The biggest D prize is Mattias Ekholm from Nashville. He'd be a great fit, is a LHD that could play with McAvoy or Carlo and is signed super cheap at $3.75 million through next season. The "through next season" part throws a wrench into things due to the expansion draft. If they acquired Ekholm and protected him, they'd have to expose one of Grzelyck or Carlo to Seattle. The alternative is paying a lesser acquisition cost and leaving Ekholm exposed. I don't think Nashville would take less, they'll find someone who would shell out and can protect him. So it'd be a great add on paper, but tough to pull off. Other D on the list are Goligoski, Montour and Jake Bean. Bean is more of a prospect than anything else so I don't think he'd interest the B's. Goligoski and Montour are veteran FA's so maybe they fit.

The biggest forward on the list is Jack Eichel. There seems to be enough smoke here that the speculation is real. He voiced frustration with the organization over the summer/fall. They added Hall, Staal, etc. and they still fucking suck. His no-move kicks in after next season so there is a pressure point for Buffalo to act, though I would think it's an off season deal. The Bruins get mentioned because he is a Boston kid but I don't see them being able to compete with NYR or LAK in terms of future assets. For the Bruins to get into the conversation, I think they'd need to put McAvoy or Pastrnak on the table. That's probably close value wise but I don't think it really makes sense for Boston. The only prayer the Bruins have is if Buffalo would take a pu pu platter of mid-level, established youngish roster guys like DeBrusk, Grzelyck, Carlo, Ritchie, Lauzon, Zboril, etc. 2-3 of those guys, plus Studnicka, prospects and picks?

As for the rest of the list, maybe he's my white whale, but I still think Hall would fit in nicely. In the summer, I wanted him as a long term play to use DeBrusk to fine a long term LHD, but now I would just like him for a playoff run. The speculation is that his acquisition cost would be cheap because he makes $8 million and has a full no-move. If it costs a 3rd and a mid-level prospect, sign me up. I guess the no-move could be problematic but given that all accounts are the Bruins went pretty far down toe road with him in the free agency, I'll operate under the assumption that he'd waive. for the Bruins. They have also been linked to Palmieri in the past. Sign me up for him too. Granlund is another name on the list that interests me a bit. We don't really know the extent of Krejci's injury, so having a guy like Granlund around as a veteran insurance policy at C wouldn't be the worst idea.
