I bought a used 55" OLED (LG 55EC9300) real cheap because of some burn-in. Under normal viewing, it manifests as a yellow tint in the center of the screen, but it's not that bad. When running test patterns, there's a pretty clear SyFy logo among other artifacts.

The picture quality and contrast is still great and has me sure I'll buy another now that they have better controls around preventing burn-in.
Well, buying a new one came sooner than expected when the 5 year old accidentally punched the screen with a PS4 controller that she was unplugging from the charging cable.

Yikes. Looks like all the really good deals are over. The $1,200 and $1,400 models are now $200 more expensive and shipping times are a couple weeks out. There are a couple of 65" open box ones at Microcenter if you're local and the extra size works for you.

Wall mounting might be the way to go. Even if it's at the same height as the TV stand, being an extra foot further back from flying 5 year old hands might come in handy.

Yup, we're looking at wall mount options now. Considering going all the way to the GX for the extra reinforcement around the screen. Figure the cost difference between the CX and GX is somewhat offset by the fact I'd be buying a decent wall mount.

We only paid $350 for the TV and sound bar when we bought it, glad this is the one that got broken...

FWIW, was chatting up an uber-knowlegable sales guy at Best Buy Magnolia in Holyoke last weekend who ran through the entire LG OLED history with me including processor development, contracts with Sony, etc. He said unequivocally the best time to shop for a screen is mid-late January ahead of the Super Bowl - "even better than Black Friday"

Excellent, I can stall that long with my 32" Vizio.

Hopefully they announced something sweet and the GX gets cheap.

Not sure if anyone can help, but my LG CX no longer is working with airplay. It just spins on the phone/tablet and then says it can’t connect to LG webOS. The TV internet works fine - plays Netflix 4K videos without a hitch. Airplay through my Apple TV 4K works fine. But not the TV. I turned off and back on Airplay the thr Tv but can’t find anything else that might be an issue.

Any ideas?

I wonder if a recent firmware update caused you issues? We've had a bunch of remote issues recently, losing tv channel changing options and volume up/down for sour soundbar on the C9.

The way I've temporarily fixed that is to remove the remote connection and the setting it up again. Works for varying times, but my issues started happening on the last 3 months or so. I don't know airplay, but maybe try to remove the connection and the set it again (unless that's what you said you did, my reading comprehension wasn't totally clear)

The only other thing I could think would be a factory reset to see if that fixes it. But that gives you a bunch of other pain for re-setting up the TV again, so might not be worthwhile

Here’s Costco’s "Big Game" promotion which started today. There’s a few good deals, but no great deals. It’s also focused on the high-end.

I'm holding out to see what Best Buy will be pricing the LG OLED 65 CX or GX in the next week to 10 days.

If the CX drops to $1799 or the GX to $1999, I may have to drop the hammer.

I'm watching CX 65 too. It just dropped 2199 to 1999 at BestBuy today. Anyone with thoughts on whether that's as good as it will get in next two weeks?

Interesting. They're not going to sell a lot of BX at 1999 if the CX is the same price. And not seeing any "Big Sale for the Big Game" language, so thinking there's a lower floor once the conference championships are decided. But if push comes to shove, I'll pay 1999 for the CX.

Edit: "Go Big for the Big Game" graphic is in the rotation after all - so maybe this is as good as it gets? The BB dude I talked to a couple weeks ago made me think the discounts would be deeper.

Edit2: Same prices at B&H and Crutchfield, but with free shipping (BB charges $80). Crutchfield's offer end tonight.

Best Buy dropped another $100 from where they've been on the GX, $1899 and $2499 for the 55 and 65.

BuyDig has a 65GX bundle for $2496 with $250 in Visa gift cards and a pair of LG wireless earbuds.

I pulled the trigger tonight. 1949 for the 65" CX at BB's "member price".

Well, I'd hope so. The OLED should of higher quality compared to a QLED
The QLED branding by Samsung is really a stroke of genius to make it seem like they are similar, when they're not anywhere close. QLED is tweaked LCD (probably the pinnacle/best of LCD to be fair), with all the backlighting challenges that includes. OLED is individually lit pixels, a completely different level of image quality.

Of course, when/if QD-OLED becomes mainstream, good luck explaining that.

But Q is a higher letter of the alphabet than O, so it must be better!

Yes indeed, the person that came up with that branding should get a royalty on all the sets sold.

I've talked to a number of people who got a brand new Samsung QLED because OLED's are the standard out there or best performance. On top of that, it was like $400 than the LG one! My neighbor got the QLED and within two weeks was asking me if he should replace it already with the OLED.

One thing I can't figure out, is with the new BX, when the Nintendo Switch is plugged in it says "The Magic Remote is automatically configured for your Switch" or something. I can't tell if it actually does anything or not.

The magic remote and the cursor that pops up drives me crazy. And you can’t turn it off. When I first set mine up over a year ago, I somehow managed to turn the cursor off. But there must have been an update a few months ago, the cursor as back and google doesn‘t have a solution.

The lack of juicy Super Bowl deals is discouraging. So much so that I'm going on the offensive: Just made a $1799 offer for an LG 65 CX on Greentoe, which is reputable and offers free shipping from an authorized LG dealer according to the AVS Forum peeps. Some even report paying no sales tax.

We shall see.

I'm devastated. Just got home from grocery shopping and went to flick on the Arsenal/ManU game. My Samsung PN64F8500, one of the greatest TVs ever made, appears like it won't turn on. I just get a blinking red light. I will have to take it off the mount and try opening up the back to see if it's just a capacitor or something, but quick searches indicate it could be the panel.

This is our main living room TV, so well I love the TCL Roku TVs for a bedroom or workout room. I really want highest quality picture for sports and movies. I'm guessing OLED is the only thing that'll come close to the picture quality of plasma. What else do I need to know? Is it LG or bust?

So LG produces all the OLED screens currently available from other brands. Sony Bravia OLED seems to have a better processor than LG's own sets, which makes it better for movies and sports (seems to be the consensus in reviews and in my own observations, Sony is slightly more natural to me, though the improvement is not that huge). But it's lacking true HDMI 2.1, so it won't be as good as LG for the latest and greatest high end video games. Also, the build quality on the Sony seems to be a little better, and anecdotally I haven't heard about as many breakdowns on the Sony as I have on the LG. Lastly, LG CX will not output DTS audio (even if you pass it through a receiver), it will convert it to Dolby--not a huge deal, but for a lot of regular 1080p Blu Rays, they are encoded in lossless DTS rather than Dolby, so you won't get the exact audio mix as intended. Sony will allow all the audio formats to play. So the LG is more future proof when it comes to HDMI and is superior for high end gaming, but the Sony might offer some advantages too. Depends on what your needs are.

My beloved Panasonic plasma started to get a little finnicky a couple months ago, so I moved it into semi-retirement to prolong its life, and replaced my main set. I ended up going with the Sony A8H during Best Buy's BF sale, because I don't do any video games on the main set, don't really plan any video games in the house anyway except for the occasional NES/SNES retro.

I have a Sony OLED (A9G), was coming from a Pioneer Elite plasma (precursor to the Panasonic plasmas). Picture quality is phenomenal - I don't game on this TV, as stated above that would probably be the only worry for me. I believe the 2021 Sony models (not released yet, but supposedly "very soon") have full HDMI 2.1 ports.

The UI of the "Google TV" that comes with Sony is pretty nice, to me. I've played with the LG UI and it's solid enough, but I think I prefer the Sony. This is a pretty minor point one way or the other though.

It could be the capacitors. Apparently this is a common problem with older Samsung TVs. I had the issue with mine and when I opened it, I could see 2-3 caps were bulging. I replaced them all, and then the TV was good as new.

I'm hoping this is the case. I got it off the mount, but haven't had time to open it up yet. Maybe after the kids are in bed. Would be thrilled if all it took was a half hour and $1.85 at You Do It.

Counter offer came back for $1899, which is decent I guess.

But then I started thinking... from a 14-foot viewing distance (and usually dark viewing conditions), would I really be seeing any of the gorgeousness of a 65" OLED? So decided to blow it all up and spring for a VAVA UST projector instead, max 150" diagonal.

Unfortunately none are obviously bulging. I checked the fuses and all have continuity. There was one solder joint that looked like it might be cracked, but I did my best soldering job on it and I'm still getting the same results. It's not quite clear to me how I an diagnose where the power board is failing.

Here's my other issue:

38438

Would it be ridiculous to put the CX 55" on top of Ye Old Cambridge SoundWorks Center Channel? It seems pretty sturdy, and the CX I think is only 50 pounds.

The speaker right now just barely doesn't block the screen if I don't slouch badly, but the CX is the same physical size as my current TV, but without the bezel now all screen, and with a somewhat shorter stand. And I really don't have anywhere else to put the speaker. Wall mounting's really not an option.

I looked for a riser online but can't find one with good dimensions.

I would recommend you attach the TV (old or new) to an adjustable VESA stand, replacing the fixed stock stand the tv comes with. I replaced the blade stand my Sony came with with this:

View: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XLMQ39D

And I set the TV height just high enough to fit my Klipsch center channel speaker without any obstruction.

I'm in the market for a new TV and seems a few people here have the LG CX. I am leaning towards that, and it seems to be the most highly rated TV. That said, the obvious issue is burn-in. I'm trying to gauge how likely of an issue this is to be (I generally vary my content---but for an issue like this, it's quite annoying pretty much every channel now keeps their logo in the corner of the screen all the time). I feel like I see this maybe being discussed as more of a huge concern (likely even from non-CX owners) than it actually is in practice.

Also wading through AVS Forums, I see a few other issues being discussed (which is the case with every TV discussed over there). I saw some comment that the 65" models are more problematic than other sizes but not sure how accurate that is. For obvious reasons, I would rather not deal with exchanges and the 'panel lottery' that often gets discussed over there. I know there's risk with any brand/model so just wondering if anyone's impression is that these are any more problematic than other sets.

Regarding the 'darkness' of this set and OLEDs generally, I don't think I'll particularly mind that as I find many TVs these days overly bright (to the point they strain the eyes).

Basically, LG CX owners--are you happy with your purchase? And what gave you comfort in buying in spite of burn-in concerns?

I noticed much more temporary image retention with my old plasma than my new OLED (I have the BX and not the CX, but they have identical panels). So far old emulated arcade games haven't been any issue at all. I found this site when I was researching the TV, which showed how difficult it was to actually burn an image into the TV.

Real Life OLED Burn-In Test on 6 TVs - RTINGS.com

The takeaway is that these are probably terrible for airports that run CNN 24/7, but are fine at home.

Thank you, very helpful. As I suspected, it seems to be more of a theoretical than actual issue (I understand it will happen with some sets but seems relatively unlikely). Safe to say you're happy with your BX? Do you find the PQ noticeably better than prior sets (you probably were starting with higher expectations coming from plasma).

I LOVE my CX 65 (note I am not a gamer - I know those who are have different needs maybe). I don't think burn in is really an issue for these new OLEDs unless you let it sit on the same thing for 20 hours a day for months and months and months at a time.

I have a 77" CX and I'm very happy with it. Some of the best advice I got was to not run all the test patterns out there and to sit back and enjoy the screen. Once you see an issue you can't unsee it and your eye keeps looking for it. No panel is perfect, so don't go looking for trouble.

Yes, that seems to be the case. AVS Forums are helpful but also will make you aware of problems you probably never would have noticed.

Thanks to you and canderson for the feedback.
