Are there are 2 ways or old Red Claws that can be added? Random dude from the local Y? I honestly don't know the setup this year.

8 really is starting to border on not a real basketball game. An injury and/or foul truoble is going to turn this into a joke.

I know there are financial implications and it's just the regular season, but I think 9 or 10 player minimums would have been more reasonable.

It would be nice...though i dont expect it...if the officials let them play a bit tonight in that vain...

A ton of teams run 8 man playoff rotations. For a few games, there's nothing problematic about suiting up that many. No margin for error though. They're going to have to talk with DT about taking stupid fouls too.

Did anyone see the article in the Globe? It looks like Edwards, Grant, Time Lord and Thompson shared a car together. The only one to wear a mask was ... Edwards, who we're not even sure is a real NBA player. But anyway, that must be why he's cleared. Brad's got to get on these guys about wearing masks.

They should all be fined for being shitheads. We'll never get through a season without players taking it seriously.

Having a game in which only 8 men end up playing is totally reasonable, happens all the time.

But only having 8 available is going to be a problem, like you said, no margin for error. You can't prospectively know pre-game when 8 is going to be a issue.

If the NBA has a lot of games with 8 available, eventually there will be a few that get silly. Maybe they won't get any games with less than 5 players, but having a game decided by 5 guards or entirely by the end of the bench definitely could happen.

For sure we will see some silly.

Someone will drop 30 or 40 in one of these games who has no business doing so in the NBA under normal circumstances. Non zero chance that we end up with a game or two this season where someone gets to keep playing with eight fouls.

Obviously not for tonight, but are there any options to bolster the lineup moving forward for the next couple of games? Bibbs maybe?
Celts have the max 17 players under contract, if they brought 1 in they would have to waive 1.

Not sure what the quarantine rules if any are when you sign a new player how long until they can actually play, but I know there's normally an injury exemption rule that lets you add an extra player to the roster if you have too many players injured. That should really be a thing this year when you have too many players out for quarantine.

I don't think that's the case in the NBA. The only true exception is the Disabled Player Exception, which does not apply here.

Apropos of nothing but our college team dressed 6 players one game, the 6th was a football player added once his season was over. If there would have been a line I’d guess we’d have been 6-point underdogs full strength.......we won by 25. Long term it’s obviously unsustainable but nothing wrong with dressing 7-8 guys for one game.

I'm thinking of the hardship exception, which I'm not even sure if it's still a thing, but normally required players to be out 2+ weeks. But if it is still a thing they really should have changed the rule this year to allow for adding extra players at any time if you were missing 4+ due to covid.

Random question: if you had say 4 great guys---but only 4--- AD, Lebron, Giannis, and Jayson Tatum vs a regular team....not a great team not a bad team. Say, the Pacers (or, if you prefer, maybe Dallas or the Grizzlies to show a bit of range in the oppsition) at full-strength. What would that look like?

You not only are outmanned 4-5 and also have to run all four guys for 48 minutes while the other team had its regular rotation. But your four are pretty amazing.

Your D is either a 2x2 or a triangle with one guy roaming outside, right? You're going to be absolutely dominant offensively even if they can double the ball or put a guy under the hoop. Your rebounding is going to be fine. Fatigue is an issue---the Pacers should press all game. They presumably spread you out and get a lot of good looks outside, but can they be more efficient overall than you can? Not sure.

I'd bet on the 4.

The NBA did relax some of the restrictions on two-way players for this reason.

Which helps, but we're now at at least 3 cases now where teams were missing over 50% of their roster for at least 1 game, so it isn't enough

I think the significant majority of the time 8 will be no big deal. But as I said before, you won't know prospectively how things will go. If the NBA is going to play dozens of these games, eventually they will have some go sideways. An injury and 1-2 guys in foul trouble would get interesting.

I guess they figure it's just the regular season and they dont want to cancel games, I get it. Will be entertaining to see a team play a 4th quarter with 3 PG, 2 centers, and zero bench I suppose.

NBA rules always let you keep five players on the court. If the five players on the court are the only ones available, then on a player's sixth (or higher) foul, the opposing team gets a (team) technical free throw in addition to the normal result of the foul, but the player remains in the game. (NBA Rule 3.I.b). This came into play on February 5, 2014: the Lakers dressed eight players, but Chris Kaman fouled out and Jordan Farmer and Nick Young got injured during the game. When Robert Sacre picked up his sixth foul, the Cavaliers got a technical free throw as well as the two shots for the shooting foul. Sacre managed not to pick up a seventh foul. (If one of the remaining five Lakers had been injured, Kaman could have entered the game at the cost of a technical free throw.)

Steve Blake had a triple-double in that game: 11 points, 10 rebounds, 15 assists. And 3 turnovers short of a quadruple-double.

In this circumstance, I assume the 2 T's gets you ejected rule no longer applies?

Great question. First , the technical fouls for the 6th and subsequent personal foul are team technicals and technicals assessed against the player. But Rule 3.I is silent about disqualification due to technical fouls. I would guess that if literal push came to literal shove, we *might* see a foul shot for a player's second technical and then a foul shot for the team technical to keep him in the game.

But I think that the officials would try to bring back only players who were disqualified through personal fouls. In that Cavaliers-Lakers game, if Sacre had incurred two technicals, I think the practical solution would be to bring Kaman back into the game, since his only disqualification was for having six personal fouls.

Where were people getting the 9 games from anyway?

Looks like he'll miss 4, 6 at most. Even if the game wasn't postponed, it was looking like 5 with a max of 7.

When I told me Dad that our lineup would have been Tacko and a punch of point guards, he told me that it would have looked like a mother goose and all of her chicks.

Would it have made sense to " kick the can down the road".

Say a player gets 2 Techs...... he can keep playing but at some point down the road he will be suspended an entire game. I mean the whole point of a (2nd) tech is to keep a player in line. I sure as hell think that no player is going to keep committing techs if it means an Entire game lost down the road.

Neither here nor there i guess too late to institute anything new now.

We'll just have a back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back stretch when they come back.

I really liked the bubble as a fan. Games every other day.

Do they just tack on the games at the end? Sldie them in the middle (please, no) or shorten length of season in terms of games played?

Hopefully, regardless, they bite the bullet, and set up a bubble or 2 or 4. I doubt it though.

My guess is that they will lengthen the end of the regular season; they probably already have some sort of plan in place since the schedule only runs through March 4 right now. Teams that didn't miss many games will probably only play like, twice a week over the last few weeks of the season. Start the playoffs a little bit later, NBA probably would like that anyway.

Assuming everyone emerges from this without any adverse health issues, this will result in fewer games that Kemba will miss as well.
Potentially although if our schedule is jam packed in the 2nd half, there is probably going to be considerable load management for Kemba.

My wild-eyed speculation is they go 2-3-2 for the playoffs, so there is less travel

I expect them to either get everyone vaccinated or go back to a bubble for the postseason.
I don't think so on the latter. Many teams (Heat, Jazz, Mavs, Spurs, Grizz, Suns etc) are going to want the ticket and concession revenue if it's possible to open by then.
