With the Seahawks losing and Browns winning, the Seahawks pick is now set at 23.

I’ll have to check but I think this means in the first 3 rds, Jets will have picks:

2,23,34,66,86(I will double check this).

Jamal Adams is a good player but I view this trade as a win for the Jets. I thinks Seattle fans are happy with Jamal so win/win I guess.

It’s official. This is as happy as I’ve been with a hire since Parcells though I always root for whomever is hired. Have to see who he picks to be OC.
Who on the 49ers staff might be looking for a step up?

As one of the resident niners fans, this is a great hire.

We love Saleh, players love him and he is incredibly smart and works really hard.

He also starts each thanksgiving morning with a slice of pumpkin pie when he wakes up — which is a winners move.

I’m trying to stay even keeled but the pumpkin pie thing has me thinking about the Lombardi trophy.

This has the potential to be the best group of coaches the AFCE has had in quite some time

Shula/Parcells/Levy overlapped for a bit, right?

funny that current crop is all defense guys
Which is why the calls that they had to hire an offensive guy were overblown. The Pats, Bills, Dolphins, Titans, Steelers and Seahawks all have defensive coaches and the Ravens hired a special teams coach. Just hire good coaches, draft good players and things will take care of themselves.

I guess it depends how we rate that iteration of Carroll. That’s a good top 4.

Its Belichick and a bunch of potential right now.
McDermott has made the playoffs 3/4 years with a franchise that missed them the prior 17. I’d say he’s pretty established now.

He is good but Parcells(3), Levy(4), Carroll(2), Shula(5) each made multiple Super Bowls. McD has won 1 playoff game so far?

So how hard do we want to grade this and how we are evaluating? What’s Rudy’s curve ;) ?

Well yeah, he’s obviously not there yet but I think he’s firmly established in the top 10.

Breaking the current discussion into a new thread.

Congrats @luckiestman — agree with you that Saleh is the Jets’ best coaching hire this century.

The assumption was that Saleh would bring Lafleur wherever he landed as his OC. I’d let him do it, but Joe Douglas might want a first-time coach who comes from the defensive side to hire a more seasoned OC.

There are now 4 defensive minded head coaches in the AFC East. I like that.

Bringing LaFleur with him, have to wonder if they’re going to try and resurrect Sam Darnold and give him one last shot in that Shanahan style offense. His skill set fits that scheme pretty well.

Schefter thinks so.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Thursday night on “SportsCenter” that he believes Sam Darnold will remain the Jets’ quarterback in 2021 under new head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, both of whom came over from the San Francisco 49ers.

“I would be surprised if Sam Darnold were not the starting quarterback on opening day,” Schefter said.

It seems to make sense. If he’s a flop, you’ll be in a position to draft a QB. If he shows life, there’s no need to draft one.

I don’t think Fields or Wilson are so good that you can’t possibly pass on them and keep Darnold. I think they’re both projects much like Darnold is/was.

Here's a story on the Thanksgiving morning tradition:

I think DeMarco Ryan will step in nicely for the niners D coordinator role, but I miss Saleh already.

Lafleur is also thought very highly of in the organization. Shanahan wouldn't let him be interviewed by other organizations the last couple years (back when you could do that). But it's always tough to tell what offense is coming from Shanny himself vs. the staff. The D was all Saleh.

I don’t look forward to the depiction of this guy in the NY sports media as tough guy folk hero a la Cowher or Ryan, especially if they win 8-9 games in the first year or two. I can foresee the ‘THIS IS A REAL FOOTBAW COACH’ and ‘WE PHYSICAL THEY FINESSE/OFF THE BUS WE HIT THE GROUND RUNNING’ stuff now.

You have to admit that the NY Mean Mug Competition between Judge and Saleh will be fascinating to watch.

What on earth happened during his Lions interview, that’s what I wanna know.
Call me crazy, but I think the Jets have a MUCH more appealing team than the Lions. The Jets have a fair amount of talent. The Lions have a lot of big contracts and a major QB problem.

Pretty remarkable and heartening that the hiring of a Muslim-American coach by a NY team has caused so little stir.

I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable NFL fan, and this is the first time I've ever heard it mentioned that Saleh is a Muslim. (Point being, I suspect this is not common knowledge - or certainly not commonly reported - but it might become a more prominent aspect of his hiring as second-day and third-day stories about the hiring start being written.)

Don’t think it will be a big deal. This is the 3rd minority* coach the Jets have had since 2001.

*I have a tough time with a Lebanese guy counting towards Rooney rule. I have Lebanese people, albeit Christian, in my family and it was never considered as anything other than a different ethnicity similar to other brands we have like Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Irish, Polish.

It depends on how you want to look at it. Looking at talent, what talent do you see on offense for the Jets? The WR corps is young, but other than Mims it doesn't really do much for me. The RBs behind Gore are interesting, but not more than that. I think Darnold is terrible, but I admit I could be wrong about that. Becton had a good rookie year, but the rest of the OL doesn't seem noteworthy.

On defense, no one in the secondary stands out--Marcus Maye is pretty active, but is already 27. I'll grant you that Neville Hewitt is pretty good, but he's also 27. Quinnen Williams had a great year for a young player.

From any statistical perspective, the Jets were terrible this year. Their scoring offense was dead last by a significant margin. The defense was bottom 10 in scoring and yards.

The Jets do have a ton of cap space going into this offseason, but the Lions are middle of the pack and aren't in cap hell like the Saints.

The Lions D is terrible and needs a lot of work, but the offense is alright. I don't like Stafford much but he's still a viable QB for a team that wants to compete. Swift showed tons of promise this year. Hock looks like a really good TE. The WRs are bad though. Not sure if the OL is any good, but FWIW they allowed just about the same amount of sacks.

On D, Akwara is legit and Tracy Walker looks good. The rest is pretty bad. It's also remarkable how many former Pats are on the squad, even knowing about Patricia.

tl;dr: I think both teams are terrible, although I think the Detroit offense has some pieces. The Jets have a ton of cap space though, so if the GM has a good plan then the Jets should be able to put together some talent. That said, the Lions are a more talented team at this moment and aren't in cap hell. If they can get the defense to the middle of the pack and find a WR, they could be good.

I think the "mindedness" (defense or offense) of the head coach hire is overstated. I think we've all seen enough really good coordinators who turn out to be much less successful head coaches to realize that HC is an entirely different beast. BB or Pete Carroll or Andy Reid have the ability to lead and organize an entire team. Josh Allen has blossomed under McDermott. Goff seems to be stagnating under McVay.

True. Whiteness is often in the eye of the existing white beholders.
