I hope everyone is having a great ... I dunno. Holiday season?

Whatever the hell you celebrate. Have a happy one. This year has been insanely difficult and this forum and you freaks have been a big part of keeping my sanity.
I hope that you are having a good one, too.

Today I got two emails.

My cat adoption is going through. Yay.

Someone in my apartment building has Covid. Boo.

I yelled, a lot.

This is not a house purchase or a child, but I adopted a cat. His name is Malcolm. I've been told it takes him a week to get comfy.

Kitty!

Yep, give him some room. His whole life just got turned upside down, put in a blender, and lit on fire. Let him come to you and lots of treats when he does. Little feliway never hurts either.

I'm going to be getting a cat in the Spring. I'm super allergic usually, so I'm hopeful that constantly exposing myself to the allergen desensitizes me to the point where I can breath in a couple of weeks.

That's a thing, right? Right?!

Allegra D 12 hour. We have a dog, 3 cats, and I work in an old and extremely dusty municipal office and barely notice my allergies when I’m taking it regularly.

I already do the Allegra 24 hour (non-decongestant) and it's the only thing keeping me from devolving into a total sneezing disaster.

Visit an allergist and get tested and then get scheduled booster shots (if you haven't already). I'm a few months in and it seems to be helping.

How often do you have to go in for them to be effective? Every 6 months or so?

For me, it's once a week for 6ish months, then you skip a week, skip two weeks, skip 3 weeks, and then go monthly, for how long I'm not sure. Once you move to monthly it's supposed to be fully effective. They slowly increase your dose each time to help your body adjust. Sometimes it itches for a few hours but otherwise it's been totally fine.

Hmmm. I’ll have to look into an allergist.

My girlfriend desperately wants a cat. I do too but I’m dreading not being able to smell ever again.

Fortunately my house is virtually all wood floors. The only rooms carpeted are a music room/studio (where the cat will be strictly forbidden) and the bedroom.

I've lived with 4 cats before and was present when they were brought home from adoption all 4 times. However, I had never done the search/adoption process myself before. The foster parent and shelter were super communicative in the 4 days between approval and pick up on things I could do to prepare my place (same litter, food, treats). He is super vocal (a big reason I selected him) and he's done a good job of letting me know when he wants to interact and when he just wants to chill out.

One more picture.

Ah, you've been through it before? My bad, I misread what you wrote. Carry on.

Kitty! Is he all black? Black cats are the best.

@slidingsideways is allergic as well and takes some kind of regimen I can ask her about that seems to mostly keep it under control.

The foster parent guessed that he is the child of a black American Shorthair and a "blue" British shorthair. So, a very dark grey with a dime-sized white tuft on his upper chest/lower neck.

I take generic Allegra in the morning but my game changer is Singulair (prescription; generic is montelukast). It's technically an asthma medication, but it also lowers the body's total IgE level, the antibody we produce in response to allergens, which is like turning down the volume on all of my allergies. Full disclosure: Singulair has a warning for psychiatric side effects; I haven't had any side effects other than some drowsiness at first. I also use Zaditor eye drops (over the counter, generic is ketotifen) and Benadryl for sudden reactions.

I volunteer with cats. Some cats cause more of an allergic reaction than others. I haven't found a pattern -- not long hair vs short hair, nothing.

Haunted, have you and your girlfriend thought about fostering? You could give a cat some time away from the shelter (to raise her kittens to adoption age [8 weeks], to recover from surgery or illness, or sometimes cats are just stressed in shelters and need time out in a home) and tinker with some allergy meds and see how you feel. The foster cats would be temporary, so you could test-drive having a cat in your home before actually adopting one.

That's not a bad idea actually. Not sure they'd let non-owners foster, but we could explore.

I've tried Singulair and I believe that one gave me either headaches or rotten nausea (it was years ago, I can't remember specifically).

I’m finally moving on Friday.

My back is not doing so hot. Even ignoring the cervical spine issues.

A common side effect is memory loss.
