Matt Patricia did an interview with PMT a few years ago. He was such an obstinate asshole and poser. I imagine his players didn't love him for his faux Belichick style without the substance. That was a bad hire from the jump. I suspect Patricia will never be an NFL head coach again.

The Lions really are cursed. Their history is an exercise in abject futility. Even the Jets have made some Championship games in the last 30 years.

Foles' run that whole postseason was ridiculous.

vs Atl: 23-30 (76.7%), 246 yds, 0 td, 0 int, 100.1 rating
vs Min: 26-33 (78.8%), 352 yds, 3 td, 0 int, 141.4 rating
vs NE: 28-43 (65.1%), 373 yds, 3 td, 1 int, 106.1 rating
TOT: 77-106 (72.6%), 971 yds, 6 td, 1 int, 115.7 rating

And it wasn't like Foles had never done this before. In 2013 he was absurdly good: 203-317 (64.0%), 2,891 yds, 27 td, 2 int, 119.2 rating

So he was capable of putting it together. Which he...most definitely did, at just the right (for him and them) time.
Like that Flacco super bowl run. He was off the hook and got paid and then never came close again.

I have absolutely no idea how he won over the owners/football Ops guys during his initial interviews. He has come off as basically a gigantic asshole in almost every interview I’ve seen. People like that just can’t lead programs without the credibility that someone like Belichick acquired over two decades.

Give me a Brian Flores over Matt Patricia 7 days / week.

I think it's funny that you mention that Patricia may never be a head coach again and the NY Jets in the same post.

Having a dome team practice outside because you don’t think they’re tough while you pound Cheetos and Mountain Dew is Matt Patricia in a nutshell.

God damn he was such a poser. Bit Cat and PFT were joking around and Patricia was just tight lipped and obnoxious. He brought a total of zero humor. The tough guy act is ok, I guess, if you're winning. If you're at .300, you can't pull that nonsense.

You all can feel free to tell me I am being a homer and should just appreciate greatness or something, but what the fuck is this garbage from the Ringer (Patrick Mahomes is No Longer Just a Phenom. He's he GOAT in the Making), I do wonder what their editorial meetings are like, they really seem to love to go all-in on one team, it was the Eagles, now the Cheifs.

I mean come the fuck on, he has been in the league for 4 years. Has all world weapons around him and a great offensive coach, all while playing in a league that has made his position easier to play than ever before. I am not saying he is not great, but can we pump the breaks on "He is going to be the GOAT" or that the Cheifs somehow are already being talked about as a dynasty. We go through this every few years with a team that wins one SB, (Eagles, Seahawks, even the Rams before they lost), but this seems different...people just look at the Cheifs, there strings of fairly unimpressive shootout wins (when you are talking about greatness) and have crowned them already, shit there SB path was so easy because the Titans did all the hard work for them and they still should have lost to the Texans...Also, it should be required to talk about how many domestic abusers the Cheifs employ, great market inefficiency they found.

Mahomes can not be in the conversation as the GOAT until he has to play with a less than all-pro supporting cast. Talk to me again when his receivers are not open by 5 feet on almost every play and is running for his life. Looking at the Cheifs contract situation along, we will have a much better understanding of where the team and Mahomes stand in the history of the NFL in 3 years when the difficulty setting gets changed from easy to hard, till then let's see them beat a team that can play good pressman as the Pats have in there last 2 meetings.

Mahomes has a career passing rating above 110.

The highest rating of all time is Deshaun Watson at 103.6 Rodgers is at 103.1. Russell Wilson is at 102.

Mahomes is incredible. It might be a little early to call him the GOAT because Mahomes doesn't even have enough pass attempts to be on the career rating list. Still, his numbers are pretty impressive. But a smallish, but not small, sample size.

100% but let's pump the breaks on the GOAT talk...most of his throws are wide open...people love to say is is Brady or BB, there is far more of a legit question of it is Mahomes or Andy.

Mahomes has a cannon, he doesn't make a ton of mistakes, and he can run when necessary. His stats and team success back that up. They would have wont he Super Bowl in 2018 if that dude wasn't offsides. And he won it last year, coming back from big deficits in 3 playoff games.

But I agree, we can pump the breaks. You cannot be a goat after 4 years. It takes more than a decade. But Mahomes can do it. Although I do not understand why you're holding the fact that he has good receivers against him. A case can be made that Mahomes makes them great.

Disagree strongly. Pre-Mahomes everyone would make fun of Reid for his clock management. That seems gone now with Mahomes. Wonder why?

There is zero chance than Reid would be considered a GOAT but there is potential for Mahomes.

Mahomes has everything he needs to be the GOAT. Smart. Disciplined. Tough as nails. Can make literally every throw in the book. Has composure. The right mentality. A winner. Can run well when he needs to, but is still a passer first and foremost.

What he doesn't have is time in the league to be put into that category yet. He will need to put up sick numbers for a long time, and he will need to win a bunch more Super Bowls. But he's got what it takes to get there and maybe knock Brady off his pedestal. Long way to go though.

Just for reference, here are their career numbers:

Mahomes: 978-1,473 (66.4%), 12,447 yds, 103 td, 20 int, 110.3 rating, 33-8 record, 1 MVP, 1 SB win
Brady: 6,657-10,421 (63.9%), 77,526 yds, 566 td, 188 int, 96.9 rating, 226-68 record, 3 MVP, 6 SB wins

So rate stats, Mahomes is better. But it's like him running a faster 100m than Brady, but the question is whether he can keep it up over a 10k race.

But make no mistake...I've never seen a QB make the game look easier than Mahomes. The guy is absolutely ridiculously good. Best QB talent I've ever seen in a player. Yes, even over Brady.

Wait, so hiring the guy who couldn’t stop Nick fucking Foles in the biggest game of the year was a bad idea? Who knew...
It's not just that they couldn't stop him. Afterward, Eagles players on O said that they knew exactly what the Patriots were going to do on D. Patricia put super high value on discipline and low value on being unpredictable to an offense.

Mahomes has the potential to be GOAT, for sure. But let's see how successful the team is once his rookie deal is over and his richest in NFL history contract kicks in and talent in some other places on the team goes down. Not that he won't still be really good; the Chiefs will probably be winning that division year after year as long as he's there. But I can absolutely see a Russell Wilson-type situation where the team is winning a championship and a play away from another one while he's on his rookie deal, then never sniffs the Super Bowl again once the big money kicks in and the team loses a lot of talent elsewhere.

Yep, I don't disagree. It will be different for KC when he's making $40m a year as opposed to $4m. And while in NE, Brady had a lot of room for improvement - clearly he got a LOT better from when he was on a cheap deal - how much better can Mahomes honestly get? He's already putting up historically great numbers. There's very little room for improvement for him.

But man the guy is unreal.

Eh, pretty much any NBA player or NFL player who is the best player at any given time gets some GOAT talk. Except maybe Steve Nash.

Didn’t take a rocket scientist to know this was the right call.

Fun fact: No full time coach ever fired by the Lions has been named an NFL head coach again.
I feel bad for Detroit because they have allowed coaches and GMs time to build but they almost all inevitably fail. They have talent on the roster too. They have the offensive personnel to be good!

100% but let's pump the breaks on the GOAT talk...most of his throws are wide open...people love to say is is Brady or BB, there is far more of a legit question of it is Mahomes or Andy.
This isn't personal to you but I don't think the question/discussion/debate of who is more responsible for greatness is appropriate. You need both strategy and execution. The game plan should be what based around what the QB and offense does best vs how to attack a defense. Everything is connected and the coach and the QB work in tandem but ultimately no matter how well a coach designs a game-plan the physical and mental execution are paramount. Personally I think being able to execute it physically and mentally is harder than coming up with a game-plan in a vacuum. But I don't get why people want to compare two different things when you need both.

Andy Reid has been and will continue to be a good head coach. He generally knows how to maximize the effectiveness of his personnel.

Re: wide open throws
Brady threw to plenty of open guys for multiple reasons: because BB and Brady knew how to stress one defender forcing his hand to cover one of 2 guys, by using certain pre-determined play concepts designed to attack holes in different types of coverage and to add to that using movement pre-snap to help determine what the defense is going to run, route conversions are meant to get receivers more open and like all other teams the Patriots have a ton of different route conversions and breaks based on how the defender is playing the receiver, when they heavily used slot receivers against mismatched LBs and slower safeties in the 2000's, when they used 12 personnel to force mismatches when the defense went light or heavy, then when they used hurry-up to keep mismatches on the field and tire out the defense, and now they are trying to do that with bully-ball which would work in theory but their WRs and TEs leave a lot to be desired.
I wouldn't think less of Brady just because he enjoyed the benefits of the above-mentioned points as well as throwing to guys like Branch, Brown, Welker, Moss, Jules, Cooks, Gronk, Hernandez, Faulk, Vereen, White, etc.

I like how the Saturday to Sunday guys evaluate players by how they solve different problems on the field and which ones challenge them more. We know how Brady solves problems. He uses timing and anticipation, manipulating safeties with his eyes, having the answers to the test by knowing what the defense is going to do and being on the same wave-length with his receivers to exploit their weaknesses. Brady might not be a threat to run but he has great pocket presence and a quick release. He's never been a good out of structure guy. Mahomes has some overlapping skills in his problem solving toolset and some different ones. He makes pin-point accurate throws, has a cannon of an arm, can throw from multiple arm-angles/slots, is mobile and can not only throw on the run but scramble for yards.

I don't like the GOAT debate which is easy, Brady. I like talking about historical tiers. We've seen some historically elite QBs the last 20 years. Brees, Brady, P. Manning, Russ, Rodgers, and Russ and then to a lesser degree Big Ben and Rivers. Russ is still slaying today. If Seattle's offense had been more pass happy the last 4-5 years I think sportswriters would be talking about how Russ is on the GOAT path too. Mahomes current trajectory places him on the path to be a generational QB. 6-8 QBs every 20 years are in that category. Everyone 3-4 years we should see another great QB developing. Since Russ in 2012 only 3 QBs have been consistently excellent unless injured: Dak, Watson, and Mahomes. Lamar, Allen, and Murray might take that leap too or they could plateau or regress like Wentz and Goff. Could Tua, Burrow, or Herbert be next? If Mahomes sticks in his situation with his skillset, a consistently good set of players around him, and Reid as a HC unless he is injured he is going to get there. I don't see appreciating how good Mahomes is as being somehow disloyal to our guy, Brady, or cheapening his legacy of greatness. Mahomes obviously needs to continue being elite but he is already playing that way.

The Jets have made four, going 0-4 and none of them were close.

The Lions have made a grand total of one and they got demolished.

One championship game in the Super Bowl era, talk about futility.

Aside from the expansion Texans and Browns with none, I can't think of another team with only one trip to the championship game.

The Jets kept it close against Denver and Pittsburgh but fumbled away the Denver game and just couldn't finish the comeback against Pitt.

They got hosed in 1984 in the AFCCG vs the Dolphins, Shula purposely left the field uncovered the night before the game when a monsoon rolled in and drowned the field, slowing down the Jets tremendous pass rush and they lost that game.

We keep waiting for karmic justice and it never comes. Absolutely disgusting that this POS continues to be celebrated.
Yah. And it’s not unique to the NFL sadly. See people like Chapman (in baseball) and AB. Rooting for the laundry blinds people. Also. If you are talented the NFL (and sometimes MLB) and its assorted teams will give you numerous second chances even if you don’t deserve them.

Hell, the same thing happens in the entertainment and music industry.

Happens in corporate America too in many ways in any role where someone has direct impact on revenue/profit numbers. A lot of bad behavior and stuff gets overlooked if someone is bringing in the numbers.

Good point. And many times even if they are let go from their current employer another company would pick them up despite the backlash.

You wonder how well-known this might have been around the trade deadline. There seemed to be a lot of noise about him then; perhaps knowing/suspecting something might have dimmed those prospects
