Great for the Celtics, and Tatum.

It's weird that it gets reported this way.

He doesn't qualify for the 5/195 yet.

That's just the max he can get.

Theoretically, they could have spun the wheel this season and if Tatum doesn't make all-NBA again, he doesn't qualify for the 5 year / 30% Max deal, only the 25% Max deal, right?

With doing that guaranteed to piss him off, I'm not saying Ainge should have done that, just curious how much that inclusion on the all-NBA 3rd team cost Wyc (and our roster flexibility).

He doesn't qualify for the 5 year 30% max now. Deal is a 5 year 25% max, which becomes a 30% max if he makes all NBA(or MVP or DPOY) this year.

If Tatum isn't All-NBA next year, then he's not the player we think he can be, and the Celtics are screwed. Their only road to a championship is on the back of Tatum putting himself in the MVP conversation. Might as well bet on that outcome.

Great great news - I love what he and Jaylen bring to the team, both in talent and personalities. Now we just have to extend Hayward...wait

Well, not necessarily--because voters are stupid and things happen. But seeing how he got it this season, it should work out.

I mean, honestly just missing all-nba would probably be good for the Celtics if it's a snub. Save a bunch of money on the same caliber of player.

The contract doesn't begin until after next season. We still have 5 seasons before the option.

We have no idea what the CBA will look like in 5 years either. The max could be gone.
Also, if he wants out he'll be pushing for a trade before the option year even comes up

If he doesn't make all nba we can get rudy to investigate the voting and conclude he made All NBA 3rd total landscaping team.

No one should be disappointed about the player option. That is standard at this point in the nba for a max player.

He's got too much hype to be snubbed, especially considering he made the 3rd team this past season. Best chance is that he misses 20 games with an injury, it heals completely and he's fine before the playoffs, but a guy who misses that much time isn't making all-nba (unless they are a legit MVP candidate).

Jayson Tatum's 5-year max extension will pay him $163 million with an incentive structure that could see the deal escalate to up to $195.6 million for making first team All-NBA. Will start at $28.1m to 33.7m next season, going all the way to $37.1m to $44.5m in '25-'26.[/QUOTE]

Woj: Tatum's extension includes a player option after the fourth year of the deal in 2025, source tells ESPN.

Kemba will have an expiring contract when (Tatum BFF) Bradley Beal is an UFA. A S&T for Beal or another all star will be instrumental in prolonging this run.

Tatum’s mom said he thinks about his Cs legacy. This is another step. “He wants to not just say that he played here his whole career, but that he brought the city of Boston a couple of banners and his number is retired. I’m certain he would love that.”

Edit: could this family be any cuter? From the article:
Tatum and his mother, Brandy Cole, had a brief toast, and Tatum’s 3-year-old son, Deuce, was happy but did not quite know what the fuss was about. But he caught on rather quickly.

“We were trying to get him to say congrats,” Cole said by phone Sunday night. “And I said, ‘Tell daddy, ‘Show me the money.’ And he was like ‘Show me the money!’”

Regarding Tatum's player option year: it allows him to become a SuperMax (35%) player a year earlier than if he signed a guaranteed 5 year extension. 5% of $120 million (likely more) is not nothing, and that's assuming the max and super-max provisions are kept as they are in the next CBA.

Also interesting to note is that Donovan’s #45 is not retired by the Celtics.
I was pushing hard for Eric Fernsten, but it never gained momentum.

Hey, I'm thrilled to see this box checked and can count on rooting for a dynamic and delightful guy like Tatum for another 4 years.
