Self explanatory

This should be short-lived as we have about an hour or so before Gordon decides.

Green or gone?

For the sake of argument (I have no idea what he's thinking) Gordo opts in and signs a 3 years extension worth around $70 million, for a total value of $104 million over the next 4 years.

I voted for what I WANT to happen — stays with the Celts — he was back to being Utah Hayward before the bad bubble break.

I also think the Celtics NEED him as a third option (or second, depending on Kemba‘s knee/Kemba trade/Jaylen’s growth).

I worry, though, that there’s a S&T in the works. Being a sports pessimist, I wonder if Kemba is off to NY (thus, today’s salary purge) and Hayward off to Indiana for Turner (because he’s a big and his age is more compatible with the J’s timeline).

I think if he wanted to be here he's have opted in already. There may be some bad blood about how the ankle injury was handled. After the break they left the metal in his ankle and had to do surgery to remove it months later than it needed to be, and that set his rehab way back. I remember him blogging about it.

I hope I'm wrong but that's my gut on this.

Edit- BTW the option should be "opt-in then traded" with a second, "no opt-in, sign and trade" if he opts in it's a 1 year deal he's traded on, he has to not opt in and become a FA before he can do a S&T.
Declines to opt in, and then is traded at some point in the next few days in a S&T.

I think he decided some time ago that whether here or somewhere else he wants a long-term deal.

I may have this wrong, but if Gordon doesn't opt-in by 5pm, hes a FA, and the Celtics have no ability to trade him.

If there was bad blood, why is he rushing back to play in the playoffs and miss the birth of his child?

GH wants what every player wants - he wants a long-term contract with a contender. Problem is one may not exist right now. If I were him, I'd opt-in and get a (hopefully) injury-free year in and also hopefully CV will be behind us. But I'm sure he's not looking forward to going through another FA period.

Sign and trades are only for FAs. The Celtics can trade Gordon under 2 circumstances....
1. He opts in, and he is on a 1 year 34.1M deal that can be traded.
2. He doesn't, he becomes a FA. The Celtics having his Bird rights can go over the cap to sign him, including to sign him and trade him to a team that wouldn't have cap space to just sign him.

So if he want a long term deal and to go to a team other than the Knicks, Hawks or Hornets, his best move is to let the option expire, then talk contract with teams (incl. Boston) he's interested in, then ask the Celtics to trade him to one of those teams (which they will to get assets and maybe a TPE back).

According to Forsberg, GH can opt-out and a sign-and-trade can be worked out. https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/gordon-haywards-decision-will-set-celtics-offseason-motion

That sounds correct to me as GH can opt-out and resign with BOS so why wouldn't he be able to work a SnT?

In fact it has to. You can't sign a new contract if you are under contract. You could extend, but then the $ rules come into play, and he'd have to be paid way more than anyone wants him for.

Thank you for that primer. (Not snark — needed the explanation.)

He‘s gotta be opting out — that’s what the deadline extension was for, right? To see what the possibilities are, post-draft? There are buyers out there (which will be further clarified by free agency).

Now there's your worst case scenario if it materializes...
Yeah, though honestly, I thought the Hawks were scarier. Hawks are actually kinda good? And Gordon does not seem like a "I want to be in NYC" guy.

However, 2 option for teams that want him and can sign him does help his leverage.

The Knicks have been aggressive in their pursuit of Gordon Hayward all week, sources say Amid a growing belief leaguewide that Hayward will decline his $34 million player option for next season, New York may loom as Hayward's best option given all the Knicks' newfound cap space

Man, if GH goes to NYK for four years and what I guess would be a max deal, I'll say I've misjudged him.

Not that I begrudge him the $ but I guess I don't see what would be attractive about that situation or playing for Thibs.

Even if he wants to sign with a team that has cap space, you can offer them picks or something to do it as a S&T, right? The important thing is at least getting his salary space to spend.

Interesting. If they’ve been aggressive all week, but Hayward/his agent asked for a deadline extension, it seems like he’s not thrilled with that option and is searching for other suitors. As many of you have noted, he likely wants to go to a contender — NY is a loooooong way away.

Begs the question — NY or Atlanta, who becomes relevant sooner? Atlanta, right? But even their timeline doesn’t fit Hayward’s.

Atlanta might make the 8 seed this year

Your gut is that the Celtics are responsible for scar tissue in Hayward's ankle? Are you Felger or Mazz?

I voted High Wrist Sprain (because, it wouldn't seem too far off his string of luck). But I have a hard time seeing him sign a contract with the C's - wouldn't that have happened already? Or maybe if most of the wings (and matching conrtacts, if you can ifnd them) were shipped for Harden or similar he stays... But it feels like he is leaving.

Extensions and FA contracts have different rules. He has to be a FA before he signs any long-term deal

I can't tell if that's his guess or if he's heard something.
Mr. Burt has all of 3,800 followers (and change) on Twitter. Is there reason to believe he has any inside information?

Extensions don't have to be for more money.

No. And folks with hundreds of thousands of followers get crap info too. Was wondering about the info value of the post, so I asked.

What is attractive is the $$$.
The first $100M is super attractive I'm sure. But one of the great things about having much money is supposed to be freedom - you know, the freedom to go to your job every day and not hate it.

As I said, good for GH if he can get NYK or ATL to give him a max deal and he takes it. He'll be playing a lot of meaningless Bball for the next two or three or four years.
