That's a good pickup for the Sixers. They just improved and I say that as a Horford fan.
It's a nice trade in a vacuum, I guess. They'll be better next year, but the context matters. They took a successful team and turned it into a dumpster fire by dealing Butler, paying Harris and using their cap space on Horford. They just gave up a 1st to get off of a dude they threw $109 million at just one year ago, and got back a 33 year old guard who Lakers fans were ready to drive to the airport most of last season.

I feel like it's a good move for them to begin to climb their way out of the hole they dug for themselves, but man, this is some self-inflicted harm and I love to see it.

They must be making this a three-way deal with the Lakers Schroeder acquisition combined with this deal.

Green+Ferguson isn't enough salary to match Horford, and Green wouldn't be able to be aggregated right away.

Edit: I guess they might have just enough room to fit Horford under the cap for just Green, then send Ferguson to Philly separately, but they'd have to renounce Gallinari and Noel to do so. Not sure of the math there with so much happening, a three way deal would still make more sense I think.

Not to mention all their draft pick snafus, including Fultz. They still have a solid roster thanks to Embiid/Simmons picks but they really could be a juggernaut right now with some better moves over the past couple of years.

Embiid-Tatum-Simmons would be unbelievable. Still some spacing issues on offense, but would be insane on defense.

Part of the value of bringing in a new guy to run the show. Much easier for Morey, than Brand, to look at those prior moves as what they are - sunk costs.

Honestly Fultz wasn't even a snafu, he was a weird freak occurance. He was generally considered the clear #1 in that draft.

It was a far more defensible pick than Okafor, who screamed bust.

I don't think many NBA people were screaming bust on Okafor. He was widely considered to be a top 3 pick that year and that's where he landed. Additionally, Porzingis was rumored to want nothing to do with Philly so that took another option off the table. And the pickings after those 2 were...rough.

This. It's not like there were a bunch of studs selected after Okafor that they overlooked. It's basically Devin Booker and that's it, and nine other teams whiffed on Booker too.

Danny Green is not that good (anymore)
If you were just doing a cursory look at his stats, its easy to see how you come to that conclusion. And its inescapable that he isn't the same player at age 33 that he was in his prime with the Spurs. However as a guy who knows his role, can credibly defend most opposing players on switches and hit from beyond the arc at league average or better and is a more natural fit on the 76ers roster than Horford, Green was a good get.

We have covered the 76ers failings at length here and they are clearly numerous enough to cost a lot of people jobs. That said, in isolation, this trade was a win for them on paper.

I don’t think it’s a stats-based argument, at least traditional stats, as they’re not to far off his career averages. It’s that he’s lost a lot of his lateral quickness and was a bad on-ball defender because of it. Still a smart team defender, but he is imminently cookable guarding the point of attack.

There is no disagreement here about any of this. My only point is that Green is less cookable than Horford and fits the 76ers better, even with his diminished quickness and advanced age. Horford's contract was a mistake, trading it away and paying a pick to do so sucks and the 76ers really fumbled the process. But this transaction helps reverse some of that damage.

BTW, the chatter on Thompson is an ACL though we are smack in the middle of peak NBA fake news.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a very good move by Philly to get off of Al. A healthy Kemba remains a tough matchup for the Sixers, though.

So Detroit just acquired Ariza. Houston picked up his $12.8mm contract as part of the deal with Portland but only $1.8mm of that is guaranteed. I wonder if Detroit buys him out and where he winds up. He is old and not nearly what he once was but can probably contribute modest minutes to a contender. He seems like a Bucks candidate but I suspect all of the eligible suspects will kick the tires on him.

Ariza will have to have his contract fully guaranteed to make the Covington trade work.

Keep cashing them checks Trevor

Adrian Wojnarowski
@wojespn

22s

Sacramento Kings forward Bogdan Bogdanovic plans to enter restricted free agency on Friday at 6 PM ET, sources tell ESPN.
I wonder if this is just ass covering. Milwaukee technically wasn't allowed to have any contact with Bogdanovic, or even tell Sacramento what they were willing to pay him, yet.

I'd still expect him to end up in Milwaukee when it's legal.

Thank you - I know Houston picked up the entire deal but thought the guaranteed money didn't change. Keep getting them checks indeed...
