Uninspiring 72 from Brooks today. Not really a huge deal, and I know he's been hurt most of the year, but without the WGC 2 weeks ago he'd probably be missing the Playoffs.

The newest course at Bandon is Sheep Ranch, and it's phenomenal. Take a tour

https://envisage.golf/sheepranch/
down arrow activates the flyover, left/ right arrows move you from hole to hole

It's an insane place to play. I've played two of the courses, lost badly both times to the course.

here's the overview

https://www.bandondunesgolf.com/golf/golf-courses
There are five full courses, a 13-hole Par-3 course and an extreme putting course

If you're into history, here's the book on how they built it

Bones is so so so good on the course for Golf Channel.

Also the wind makes this so good. On the 15th hole, 162 yard par 3 dead into the fan. One guy goes 40 yards long one comes up 40 yards short, neither were anywhere close. Pretty basic shot with no wind, so hard with the wind.

What a way to end a match, anyone see that at the US am? All square on 18, one player in greenside bunker and the caddy touches the sand with his hand which results in a loss of hole penalty.....ouch

That was bizarre. I figured there was some new rule where a caddy could jump in a bunker. I can’t believe he tested the sand with his hand. Hell of a way to lose a big match. And it sounded it like he was denying he touched the sand. He dug a freakin hole.

That was so bad. Then he tried to lie about it too. he's apparently a player at Arkansas so he knows better.

My budding golfer son was watching that unfold with me. It was a great lesson in being honest and honorable on the course. He was a bit non plussed by the dad caddie’s reaction getting angry at the denial by the other caddy, but I explained to him why I thought the reaction was OK - the dad saw a clear violation, and the caddie flat out denied it. Really an unfortunate way to win the match, and the winning player felt bad about it. But them’s the rules. Maybe the rule is too harsh - YMMV on that, but it seemed to clearly be the right call based upon the rules.

Wow. Catching up on this - I was in that same bunker a few weeks ago, except I had the worst buried lie I’ve ever had in an already bad round. And my caddie never did anything close to that.

27 players within 2 shots.

SoSH favorite Rob Oppenheim is one of 7 guys tied for the lead. Coverage is streaming on the NBC Sports app right now.

I'm just watching the coverage on Sky Sports in the UK, and during one of the US commercial breaks they had a snippet of an interview with Ian Poulter - he just confessed (apparently for the first time) that on the Thursday night before the Ryder Cup at Medinah in 2012, he was playing table tennis and sprained his ankle. Never told anyone about it, just took some painkillers and the adrenaline was enough to get him through the week...with a sprained ankle. That's pretty amazing.

(Also, go Rob!)

Strafaci has a voodoo curse on the 18th hole.

The course was the star here.

There are others who have been there and know more about Bandon than I do, but my understanding is that Bandon doesn’t have the infrastructure to host anything larger than the US Am.

They aim high there, but I agree that gallery control would be an issue and outside of the resort itself Bandon is a REALLY small town, even for towns on the Oregon Coast. You're looking at over 100 miles to the nearest mid-size airports

This is correct. It's a nonstarter. And frankly the course isn't hard enough for the pros unless the wind is whipping.

However in COVID times it could absolutely hold other events. It's a fantastic match play venue. Would love to see a Solheim cup there, for example.

That would be a great Ryder Cup venue. Will it get a US Open?
Granted it's been 15 years since I was there, but there's nothing in the way of lodging nearby that would be able to handle a big tournament, nor do I think the infrastructure/roads could handle it; it's remote, most people that play it stay on site with the closest city is Eugene 2.5 hours away. Would be glad to be corrected by jercra or FL4WLESS as I know they've been there more recently, it'd be awesome to see.

Edit: Ah and while typing, TFP confirmed, forgot you'd gone there recently man.

Nothing to correct. They could potentially solve the lack of hotel rooms and restaurants with a few cruise ships docked off-shore (post-COVID, of course), but the surf an weather there can be absolutely brutal so you'd kind of have to be an insane person to agree to stay on one and be shuttled to shore and then bussed up to the resort. I also discussed this week doing some potentially creative things like setting up some "glamping" sites and camping sites all around Bandon Trails and making it more live concert/festival event than a golf event. That could be super, super fun and a really interesting scene, but again, the weather makes it impossible. There would tents flying all over and probably some pretty serious injuries from tree branches falling and such.

But, even if you could solve the hotel problem, the airport and rental car problems are bigger. I was looking at going to Bandon last week to play Sheep Ranch right before the US Am started (was out in PDX for a member/guest already) and you couldn't find a rental car anywhere in PDX, Eugene, Coos Bay or Bandon. Eugene airport couldn't remotely handle the amount of fans that would come for a US Open type event. PDX is 4.5 hours away. North Bend is a little tiny airport that mostly doesn't even handle commercial traffic except for a few months a year.

That was a long-winded way of saying it's a non-starter.

But, a PGA Tour level match play event would be amazing there. I want to see it in March though, not in August. It was way too easy out there for them this week. Whipping winds, pouring rain and cold temps is the way Bandon is supposed to be.

I think my wish-fulfillment would be the Ryder Cup — limited number of players — but once you're in Bandon, you're in Bandon. We're there the next three days and, even in the best conditions, the town would just be crushed.

It hosted the Curtis Cup (women's amateur teams) back in 2006. You could possibly try, as was suggested, the Solheim. Anything bigger would be a logistical nightmare.

I think Dan Hicks said it best during the final, as he and Justin Leonard were raving about the complex ... it's best seen as a Bucket List visit

Ancer, Hoffman, Leishman and Cam Champ in today's charity hit and giggle. They are playing Wolf format, something I had never heard of until I watched the NLU Wild World of Golf episode where they played it.

It was confusing as hell and I still don't really understand it but it seems fun.
