Part of my post was tounge in cheek, I have no problems saying LeBron is an all time great.

When I watch LeBron, and I watch him quite a bit, the thing that honestly stands out the most to me is how frequently and how dramatically he complains about calls. That is probably me taking his brilliance as a player for granted, having become accustomed to his incredible playmaking and flawless fundamentals, but even by NBA standards his complaining is elite. Last night he made the game winner and instead of celebrating he immediately went to complain to the refs because he thought he was fouled.
I think people also discount the impact this has on the newer generation. A ton of the guys who grew up/right under lebron have the same garbage in their game (paul george for example).

A small thing, but I wonder if it would be possible for the broadcasters to project different court designs under the feet of the players, in a similar fashion to how the yellow first-down marker (and much else besides) is projected onto the field during NFL broadcasts. I like the simple court design being used in Orlando, but I don't like that it's going to be the same for every game, just as I don't like how March Madness now has the same sterile court design in every arena each year instead of allowing different venues to differentiate themselves. It'd be fun if, e.g., for a nominal Bucks home game like their tilt with the Celtics right now, the court had something on it to reflect that.

Seriously, I might be out on the NBA for the season after that Giannis replay nonsense tonight. There’s enough real shit to be upset these days without adding NBA officiating to the mix. The starless C’s aren’t going to get a fair shake against the Bucks, Lakers, or Clippers — why get invested?

You make a compelling point, my friend, and I'm feeling the same way.

Harden going nuclear right now: 23 points in 9 minutes in the first Q ... on 6 fga (6-6 fg, 9-9 ft).

Rox 42 Mavs 42 after one. I hope no one took the under.

Others have mentioned it, but it’s astounding how well the NBA has crafted the game presentation. It is a real delight to watch.

85-75 at the half Mavs, lol. Harden cooled down a bit after the Mavs started blitzing him like crazy as soon as he crossed halfcourt. To his credit, he didn't force anything, and the Rockets scored pretty easily on the resulting 4 on 3s. Unfortunately, they let the Mavs get all they could eat on O.

I'll co-sign "delight to watch," though the game did feature possibly my biggest scoring pet peeve when Harden swallowed the ball at the end of the half rather than ruin his FG% — which happens all the time and is totally stupid and avoidable. Counting heaves as 3FGA deprives fans of a play that is both conducive to winning and fun to watch. Just count it if it goes in, like beating out a successful sac bunt. Also, selfishly: Steph's all-time best 3FG% would be even higher if they didn't wrongly count all the buzzer heaves he takes as 3FGA.

Oh and another pet peeve: Harden has 4 fouls. Just get rid of the stupid foul-out rule and let people rack up fouls, so we can watch the stars and don't have to endure nonsense like all those Giannis non-calls.

The bucks logo and fiserv arena were projected on the court tonight in exactly this fashion

That's weird - I watched nearly the entire game, or at least had it on in the background the whole time, and never noticed this once. (I was watching the Boston feed with Gorman and Scal commentating...is it possible that this was only done on the ESPN broadcast?)

That was an utter travesty how they could replay that and come away with no call at all. The Celtics picked up fouls on more phantom contact than that, which was undeniably hard enough to double over Theis. I hope the sportswriters call out the refs today on that BS. I know all fans complain about the refs, but what happened there really was shameful and inexcusable.

Yeah on CSN it was New Balance logos until they realized that it projected onto white players skin as well as the court. I think it was gone in the second half.

Ah - yeah, I did see the New Balance logo. But somehow I thought that was on the court itself, not projected onto it.

(Come to think of it, I have no idea why Sky Sports in the UK chose to take the CSN feed instead of the ESPN feed. Very strange.)

When we did games at NextVR we worked with the telestrator company for about two years on trying to get the system to work on a basketball court the same as it does on a (green) field/course or pavement but the glare was a real challenge to overcome (making inconsistently perceived depth) and we were never able to get it quite right. They could do amazing things with tracking golf balls in flight, but a simple logo on a basketball court was surprisingly hard.

I thought they ended up calling it on Smart?

Actually, to be clear, there were two dubious calls. The one where Giannis raked his hand over Theis's groin hard enough to double over the big guy, I thought was a clear foul. I sort of assumed that was what mauf was referring to, but I may be wrong. That was such a clear foul that, you may have noticed, Giannis went over and sat down on the bench initially, I assume thinking he had fouled out.

The one on Smart, I could see calling that either way, honestly. That was a tough one. I'd lean toward a charge on Giannis, but I could see someone arguing that Smart was shuffling his feet late to get out of the restricted area, and Giannis was already off his feet.

Mauf said replay so I assumed he was taking about the Smart one. Didn’t see the other egregious call to know if it also involved replay.

It did involve the officials reviewing what Giannis did (on replay) to determine whether it constituted a "hostile act." Once they determined it didn't, they apparently concluded as well that it wasn't a foul either. I think Brad was scratching his head on that one.

The Heat up 15 on the Nuggets going into the 4th. They look great. I want no part of them in the playoffs

edit: Bol Bol with a beautiful half court assist

The Heat can really shoot, have a lot of capable wings and guys like Butler and Dragic who can create their own shot, and they are really well coached. They don’t have the top end talent of some other teams but they will be a tough out.

Is OKC the third best team in the West? Presti did such a good job and still has all those picks on the horizon.

Eh, I would say that franchise values were steadily increasing throughout the early 2000's. (Longer than 12 years ago).

From my half-assed research, in 2007 the NBA had a 930 million dollar TV contract, baseball had a 695 million dollar contract.

In 2009, while the World Series outdrew the NBA Finals, the regular season was very close and probably won by the NBA.

I won't bother to talk about the NHLs and NFLs #s they have been the clear #1 and #4 for quite some time (viewership and contracts).

That's not good at all. Hopefully it's just a low risk incident like Holmes crossing the bubble to grab a food delivery.

DDR with the most nonchalant last second possession ever and he still baited brooks into fouling him

edit: and the clock actually froze with a second left, not sure if he actually got fouled before it would have run out normally
