I routinely play the front tees at my course (yes, the one's ALL the way up). This is loads of fun and you'd be surprised that you can still bogey and double from those tees if your <100 game isn't dialed in.

A couple weeks ago the Sunday group I play with started a game on Sundays where we alternated the front tees (5500 yards) with the back tees (7200 yards) every other hole. The yardage comes out to the same as our blue/white combo tees. That was a blast.

I fully support changing tees and playing around with different setups.
Along these same lines, I don't belong to a club so I'm not willing to pay full price to play the forward tees, but there's a par 3 course right down the street from me that I play during my lunch break on a lot of days that I can't get out to a full round. It's fantastic for hitting 2-3 balls from 70-170 yards and then getting in a lot of real-world chipping and putting practice. It's also fun as hell.

All square on the 14 tee. I think both Kiz and the Foreplay crew are -1. Kiz missed a couple birdies on the front and the ForePlay group is playing good team scramble golf.

I followed along for like 5 holes, was pretty fun to watch.
The full video dropped this afternoon. Pretty awesome content.

Haha I was in the background multiple times. When Frankie almost hit Kiz with his practice green on the 8th tee, Kiz looked right at me and my gf and made a face and made us laugh. Good stuff.

So we went to the trackman sim last night. I dunno. It didn't go as planned. I mean I wasn't swinging well, but something about my swing wasn't translating to hitting off the mat.

For example, I hit 10 9-irons that averaged like 136 carry. Today I had 146 in from the fairway and I hit a pitching wedge which landed by the hole and rolled out about 3 yards. No wind, swung normally, etc... No point in doing a gapping session if its not going to carry over to the course.

Definitely a good watch. The match was square for most of the time. I expected Kiz to be in a little more trouble but also hit a couple long putts. Riggs swing is still disgusting but he's gotten a lot better since he's been at Pinehurst and Frankie's wedge game is almost too horrible for me to comprehend

It's probably not the Trackman. The ball and mat are big variables especially with the shorter clubs

Riggs clearly was fighting it. He only hit like half the tee shots and passed on a bunch of irons. His chipping was outstanding though - that one he hit on the 14th hole is way way harder than it looked.

I don't know if it shows on the video, but Frankie and Lurch were absolutely roasting their drivers on their good ones. I know Kiz isn't "long" by tour standards but he's obviously moving it out there and they were right with them. Of course, Kiz did it on every hole and they...didn't.

Also - Kiz's tee shot into 9 and approaches into 8 and 11 are so so good. He's got 200 yards into literal 5 square yard landing areas and he was sticking them there. I was stunned watching them.

Oh I thought Riggs was great. He hit a lot of clutch shots. He passed on some of his tee shots cuz he just doesn't have the distance. You could tell by the sounds Frankie was making and the ball flight Lurch had that they were getting it out there. Riggs best drives are probably 25 yards behind a good Frankie/Lurch one

Frankie looks like he has some serious swing speed. The wedges have to be borderline yips at this point because someone with a swing as decent as his shouldn’t be so unconscionably bad with their wedges. I absolutely love Trent. Dude is clearly just thrilled to be out there playing no matter how much he sucks. Reminds me of me.

Borderline? He can't be in public without someone shouting "butter knives" at him

It can totally be the trackman too. Were you hitting with the little metallic dots on the ball and lined up properly? I'd not, trackman has a real hard time seeing things right indoors. Of course, mats can mess things up too. I trust my garmin watch more than anything else for distance tracking, but that's mostly because I don't know where to hit on a trackman outdoors where it really shines.

That foreplay video with Kizner was great, @Zomp. If there are any others that are like that, please point me in the right direction.

Edit: I'm about halfway through the first time they played earlier this year. That's pretty good,t oo.

I played again this morning, with the temperature in the high 40s and the wind blowing at 20-30 miles per hour: rather different than my previous two post-lockdown rounds! But I started birdie-par-birdie-birdie, my best ever start at Dunbar, and on the front nine I hit three drives of more than 300 yards, a combination of good hitting and strong winds and firm turf. (I'm almost certain I've never hit three drives that far in any one round in my life; I had a 6-iron into the par-5 1st, and on the 4th - a par 4 of around 330 yards - I was able to putt my approach shot.) Of course, I gagged on the 5th and made double-bogey, didn't have another birdie the rest of the round, struggled coming back into the wind and wound up barely breaking 80, but I almost felt like a pro for a few holes there at the start of the round, and it was freaking awesome.

I finished my round in 2 hours and 40 minutes, which I mention because I was listening to the latest No Laying Up podcast about the biggest collapses in professional golf as I walked around the course. They were talking about the 1966 US Open at Olympic, in which Arnold Palmer led Billy Casper by 7 with 9 to play and lost (in a playoff), and they mentioned how fast the pace of play was in that tournament: in the third round, Jack Nicklaus and a 19-year-old Johnny Miller started the day on the edge of the Top 10, and they played their round in something like 3 hours and 25 minutes. And Charles Coody's group was first off the tee on Saturday: despite them playing faster than I did today, officials approached them six times during their round and told them to speed up, and after their round they had a 15-minute conference in the scorer's tent to determine whether they should be penalized for slow play. Different times! (Apparently they were playing with a "continuous putting" rule, whereby once you started putting on a hole you had to finish out - which seems crazy to me given how often you'd likely have to stand in your playing partners' line trying to finish out, but I guess it worked to speed things up.)

Golf simulator progression. The unit itself works fine for me. If I was a better golfer, it would probably drive me nuts. I can't hold a fairway with my driver. I'm not sure if that's because of the lack of reps on my end or lighting issues. I'm getting spotlights next week, so I should figure it out soon. I think there are a few things I can do as far as putting tape on my driver, so that it reads it better, but I haven't gone that far yet. I'm probably using it every other day, and my wife who hasn't golfed in the last ten years has fun with it. I think it'll be something fun when my kids get a little older, too. So far, I'm happy with the purchase. All of this was under $800 I think.
First iteration - hitting it into a wall. Standing on wood to level off. One of the first shots came off the wall hard and I caught myself in the neck.
31567

Second iteration: Got a screen, but didn't have anything to hang it on. Hung it on my pontoon boat and the shelf. FYI, bud light seltzers are not good.

31568

Third iteration, mat came, and I threw cardboard in the windows. It still wasn't level, so I put a piece of cardboard underneath the mat, and when I swung hard the mat moved.

31569

Most recent update, I got PVC to hang the screen from. I wasn't sure how it would handle the impact from the balls, but it works fine. I also got a piece of plywood, and cut out a hole in it for the optishot. No more moving on the mat.

31570

I have spotlights coming in the mail, and an extension chord that I will run along the ceiling. Still need to order some type of golf bag holder/stand for the laptop. And, I don't know how I'm going to hang the projector yet. I'll probably figure something out next week when I go back into the real world. I need to clean up a few areas, which I should do this weekend, so I can move the mat against the wall. My brother is a lefty, so I need to figure out how I'm going to get him on this.

Frankie and Tron from NLU should have a chip off. In fact, a NLU v. Fore Play match would probably be some good content, though not sure they would do it. NLU would have to give Fore Play shots, or even sit Soly out.

Shot a 42 this morning which included a triple bogey. Ugh. Really have to eliminate the blow up holes.

Oh, I’m happy with my score. Just wish I could turn a triple into a double, double into a bogey. That sort of thing.

I had a stressful morning even before I got to the first tee today. For one, the unlocking of tee times seven days hence at my club at 8 a.m. every morning is so frustrating: there's so much demand that the our club website is struggling to cope. I logged in and refreshed the page for next Monday's tee times right at 8:00, and at first the tee sheet seems totally empty, so I click on a time to make a booking...and hope that nobody else has clicked on the same time seconds before me. Nearly 60 seconds later, the site finally refreshes to tell me that nope, someone else beat me to the 9:20 a.m. time I wanted, but if I had clicked on the 9:10 time I would've been golden. So then I click on the 9:10 time, wait another 60 seconds, and find out that someone else has beat me to that time as well. And now half of the tee sheet is full. So I try and third time, and then a fourth, and it's only at the fifth attempt that I get a time at 2:20 in the afternoon...and I'm grateful to get that, even though the timing is awkward, because you're not allowed to book two tee times in any seven-day period, and if I can't get a time then my current Monday/Friday routine is out the window.

Anyway, I then showered, dressed and drove to the club, arriving 12 minutes before my tee time...and discovered that I'd left the battery for my electric trolley at home. After quickly confirming that there weren't any spares I could borrow at the club, I made a split-second decision and sped home to collect it. Luckily Dunbar is a small town, and I don't live that far from the club, and after breaking every speed limit I could I made it back 2 minutes before my time, rushed to the tee, and promptly blocked my first drive into the 2nd fairway. But I still birdied the hole (a par 5) after laying up and stiffing a 9-iron, and I made it through 10 holes at -1 (with a second birdie and one bogey), but then I rather let myself down on the back and ultimately shot a 5-over 76. There was a light (10 mph) north wind, and although it was chilly, I think a really good score was there to be had...but in truth I wasn't swinging well, and my putter saved me a few times until then it didn't.

Join the club. (There is a certain type of player who doesn't live up to his potential because he's happy to plug along making bogeys and take no risks, but it doesn't sound like that's you.)
I don't play competitively or keep an official handicap (I use 18 Birdies to log my scores and stats) so my scores don't really bother me, but like anyone, I want to improve and get better.

The best way to get better is to play competitively and/or play with golfers better than you.

You need to challenge yourself to get better. I used to routinely play a Wednesday cash game with two of my buddies that are scratch golfers getting no strokes. I went from a 7 to a 2 in that timeframe.

Good call. Most of my rounds are of the casual variety, with the occasional work or some other charity type outing but even still those are more of a hit and giggle. As bad/mediocre as I am, most of the folks I play regularly with are worse.

If the budget allows, I’d love become a member somewhere in the next few years

I agree with this. I've started playing with my wife - teaching her how to play - and I find that suddenly I can't hit the ball worth a crap. I'm typically in the low-80s, but can't get out of my own way playing a round with her. It's like my score doesn't matter at all. She doesn't even recognize when I hit a good shot. She's so focused on what she's doing, it's like I'm out there playing all by myself as far as my score is concerned. And so consequently, my performance on the course is irrelevant. And my game is suffering.

I'm sure there's a multitude of lessons here. haha

But yes, playing any sport with people better than you, trying to elevate your game to be competitive with them, is the way to go. Whether it's golf or basketball or ping pong or chess (not sports, but the same idea).

Check into local men's leagues. There are usually weekend events and weekday 9 hole events. You'll meet new people to golf with and, if it's any good, you'll play multiple formats and generally have to play the ball into the hole and by legitimate rules. It's also more fun to play competitively.

I hate golf. 79 (jubilation) on Thursday, 94 on Saturday (depression and anger) . I hit the ball decently both days. Apparently, chipping and putting are important.
I once went 96-79 IN THE SAME DAY. Golf is fucking weird.

I can't play golf without something on the line anymore. I used to play by myself quite a bit to practice, but just can't do it anymore.

I play two weekly money games, men's league, state championships, club championships, and whatever other random tournaments I can enter.

So the age-old question: would you rather play well but end up with a bad score, or play poorly but get lucky and end up with a good score? (i.e., hit balls into the woods only to have them take lucky bounces back into the fairway, etc.)

It's a good question. I need some luck to break 80. I'm an old guy and don't hit it too far. I hit a couple of balls on my 79 day close to OB, but found them both and salvaged bogeys.
On Saturday, the 94 day, I hit a long drive (for me), a beautiful soaring 3 wood, and had 120 left to a long par 5. Normally that's a big 8 iron for me. Took it out and hit the 8 iron of my life, about 20 yards over the green, through a fence. Triple bogey after 3 solid shots.
I felt pretty good after the round, but yes, I like some luck. It does even out, but usually not in the same round.

I have the chipping yips. I practiced chipping this morning and didn't hit one bad one. We'll see Thursday on the course.

There are multiple squirrels running on a wheel in my head when I am playing lately.

It truly is a strange game. I love it, but it was almost kind of relaxing to take a few months off.

Play well with a bad score 10 times out of 10.

Playing Thursday and Saturday afternoons this week at Rutland(VT) CC. It's my hometown course and historically has some of the faster greens in New England. It plays less than 6000 yards from the white tees, but placement is so key there moreso than length.

Low score, no doubt. No matter how well you hit some shots, a high score means you hit too many bad ones, likely around and on the green.
And in a nutshell, this is why it's an age-old question.

My best round ever was just last summer - a 75 from the far back tees. Played just terrific all around, except my driving wasn't great. But in play. "Drive for show, putt for dough" is a truism, but the reality is, if you drive like crap, you simply cannot score. My one terrible drive was in some relatively thin woods. Found the ball, chipped out, and made bogey. On bad luck days, that ball is lost and now we're adding penalty strokes. And I putted like a madman that day.

And then there are days like three weeks ago, when I couldn't make anything outside of 3 feet, and even within three feet I must have missed 5 putts. Just abysmal, and it all led to a 92. So, yeah.

My main rule of golf: never play alone. For me, golf is a social game. My favorite aspect is the banter with other players. I would never play a round by myself.

I generally agree, but one of the things I love the most is to go out by myself on a late afternoon and play in 2 hours hitting a few balls and practicing different things.

As mentioned above, I don't do it nearly as often anymore, but it was a big factor for a long time in progressing my game and providing some time to myself to enjoy nature.

For those who can walk do you play better walking or taking a cart? With me, I play better when I walk rather than ride. It helps me focus more on my next shot and am much more loose. All of my best rounds come when I walk. I tend to score better around the greens for some reason when I walk because it gives me time to think about how I want to play a chip or analyze an upcoming putt.

I adored playing by myself at my club last year. It's exercise, practice, and therapy all combined into one. I'd throw headphones, play as many balls as I want, and just...be. I wouldn't do it all the time, but when I did I would always appreciate it.

Walk 100%. I think Ive walked every round in 2020 but one and am fully converted. I'll occasionally take a cart depending on the course and weather but I now would much rather walk than ride.

Same. I'm in 2 men's clubs, the Golfweek Amateur Tour and a weekly money game. I go out as a single a lot when I get meetings cancelled but rarely play by myself. When I play by myself, it's always just a practice round while I wait for the groups in front of me. It's the best way to practice. I can get every lie and hit low shots, high shots, cuts draws, etc. all with no risk to a score I'm not even keeping. It's better than beating 200 balls at the range by a long shot. Especially for the short game.

And I always walk. It's the best way to gf but there are courses where it's not realistic for every round.

Absolutely this. I only ever take a cart if I play with friends and I hate it. I don't think walking makes me play better necessarily but I think it's way more enjoyable to be constantly moving than getting up, sitting down, getting up, sitting down. It's a more complete experience and the exercise benefit is fantastic. You don't realize how many calories you burn walking 18 and it's a lot.

1688 calories burned in this morning's round and there were very few hills and it was perfect weather. 1897 in yesterday afternoon's round. Walking is no joke good for you.

I've discovered that you appreciate the courses way more too.

I played Highfields back in May when courses first opened back up. For those who have played it, the 3rd hole is goes up over a rise Then down to the right. The cart path splits and runs down each side of the hole well off the fairway. I'd only ever played it in a cart, and this time I walked down the middle of the fairway, crested the hill, and thought to myself "damn this a beautiful hole."

Yep. It was a holy shit moment when I got my Fitbit last year and found out how much burn you get. Not that the Fitbit is 100% accurate, but it is hours of your heart rate being constantly elevated in the fat burn zone. I also carry which I don’t think makes too much of a difference in calorie burn vs. a push cart but I love being able to just walk across greens and toss my bag in the trunk at the end of the round. Most convenient way to golf.

I played the GW tour for years in cbus. The guy that ran it is now one of my best buds. I can tell you a lot of stories about the guy that owns the whole tour sometime when you come play my course again. He's a slimeball. My buddy made him a ton of money, it's effectively a pyramid scheme the way he has the money flow to him from the individual tours. My buddy worked his ass off to get a schedule full of private courses, grew the tour from 50-60 per event to 120 with a wait list.

I know more than I care to about that tour lol

Edit: I also have some crazy stories about the end of year trip to HH. We'd go every year, get a house that slept 8-10 and have a fucking blast.

I adored playing by myself at my club last year. It's exercise, practice, and therapy all combined into one. I'd throw headphones, play as many balls as I want, and just...be. I wouldn't do it all the time, but when I did I would always appreciate it.
At this point for me, this is my favorite way to play golf. It's about the only time I can really forget about the rest of the world. And practicing on the course is by far the most effective way for me to practice.

Walking, and it's not close. Though I'll hedge that and say the biggest problem with the cart is when I have to share it. Driving around to weird spots to get to the other player's ball and the constant forced chatter is a huge distraction and kills my ability to focus and get into a rhythm. Solo cart is quite a bit better. Carts are wonderful when it's 85+ and humid though.

Ditto. This year is a bit weird (understatement) but I love getting out of work, heading to the course, and either hitting the range for an hour or walking a solo 9 holes. It's a great way to decompress. Practice on the course beats the range too. Especially short game practice from tricky spots.
