Thoughts about media types who don't have their own threads

The fill ins on sports radio in this region are unbelievably embarrasing. I have caught moments of Patrick Gilroy on EEI today and Matt McCarthy on 98.5 yesterday (among others) and I don't know how to describe them other than embarrassing. Contrived yelling, hot takes, etc. It's sad this is what the up and coming generation of sports radio "personalities" have become. Absolutely no talent.
It's what they think they have to do to "succeed." Looking (or listening) around, it's hard to know if they are wrong.

Not necessarily, but she was one of hundreds who made the same assessment of the situation. Doesn't make it right, but that's how our media works these days. I think The Sun went beyond the story in their editorial for reasons I cannot imagine. When they quote the "popular" Kirk Minihan podcast as a source, though, I might be able to guess at their reasoning.

Perhaps both were wrong?

Therein lies the problem. That in the heat of the moment virtue signaling is the most important goal, who cares if later on it's proven incorrect.

Not sure Virtue Signaling was what she was doing.

Those boys were either being immature at best, or incredibly racist at worst.

Out of all the writers who wrote similar stories, The Sun chose one of the few female sports writers to editorialize about. AND to throw shade, with no support, on the SPLC.

Seems like an odd couple of targets to me.

Like I said before, I think they both are wrong.

Yes, I suppose both were wrong but I would like to think we hold the media to a higher standard than demanding for a dishonorable discharge of a someone in the military. She had 0 facts regarding the situation and had no idea what the guys intentions were. He could have indeed been flashing the the white power signal and I would agree with her if that was the case but she is just assuming that and I have problems with that. That is a big leap to assume that. Just my opinion.

So, your opinion is based on you don’t know?

Does that really make any sense to you or are you just talking?

Rob Parker says that he would take Eli over Brady 10 times out of 10. Infuriating that someone with a HOF vote (albeit for baseball) seriously believes this.
Did he say why? Because if he didn't, he's completely full of shit. BTW, even if he did explain why, he's still full of shit.

Can someone explain why WEEI seems to put Jermaine Wiggins on air so much? Does he pay for his airtime?

He has that awful combination of being dumb and NEVER SHUTTING THE HELL UP. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but he's just terrible to listen to on the radio.

So on a recent episode of the Lowe Post, Brian Windhorst casually mentioned that he lives in Omaha. That blows my mind, I figured he lived in LA or Cleveland or NY/CT area. He is on TV all the time, so must fly a ton (is Omaha a great place to catch flights??) and he is also one of the premier NBA writers in the country, yet he lives in a city without an NBA team? I really want to know why he lives there. It has to be his wife's hometown or something.

Google is your friend.
It was a hard sell. But this was my choice. When people ask me why are you there, I say, it’s my wife. She’s from there.
“But the reality is, this was my idea. I really liked it. I wanted to be here.”

I mean that is the logical answer, I just found it interesting. FWIW, I have been first in line when it comes to dumping on Windy before, but I find him to be a really interesting commentator on the game and is really plugged into the NBA. He is always great with Lowe, just two rational guys who know everything that is going on and mix in just enough humor/life stuff to liven it up.

I may have missed it, but has Milbury said anything about a co-worker like what Roenick said?
No I just think he sucks. Sorry I saw he got fired for saying something stupid but I didn't realize it was that stupid until after I posted. I shouldn't have related the 2

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
I turned WFAN on a bit before noon, and Maggie and Whomever were telling one "Chris Russo is so cheap, he....." story after another. Not sure what triggered it.

Apparently, he kept a notepad/small ledger with him at all times, and he noted every time he came up short in a transaction and would go knocking on doors at the end of every month to settle up. Not $20 or $50 or $100, but even $2.50 if everyone threw in money to get pizza and some guy was a bit short.

Other thing they pointed out is that he refused to acknowledge that he was making 5x or 10x what the other hosts or workers were making, and held people accountable for every dime.

Great story about Russo, thanks for sharing.

There's another kind of cheap which is taking every TV commercial opportunity you can. Chris Berman has never been shy about doing commercial spots and he's still doing them...

This book deal was just announced on Publishers Marketplace:

ESPN senior writer Seth Wickersham's IT'S BETTER TO BE FEARED, a revelatory account of the New England Patriots' dynasty, based on extensive and exclusive interviews over the past 20 years with key principals, including Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, and with current and former players, coaches, and front office personnel, to Dan Gerstle at Liveright, in an exclusive submission, by David Black at David Black Literary Agency (NA).

Actual interviews? Or just rehashing anonymous nonsense that he’s already published?

RIP The Cleveland Plain Dealer. The death of traditional newspapers that served up quality local news is a bad symptom.

In college, I dreamt of working at @susanbgoldberg's Plain Dealer. The destruction of that vital and once-great newspaper through negligence and union-busting and pure greed is unconscionable. https://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2020/04/07/plain-dealer-put-out-to-pasture-in-final-death-blow-remaining-reporters-given-impossible-choice …

Ben Volin with his weekly reminder of moronity:
Then we get to the Patriots, who are clearly rebuilding. They had several starters and core players leave: Jamie Collins, Van Noy, Duron Harmon, Stephen Gostkowski, James Develin, Nate Ebner, and, of course, Brady. Belichick did very little to replace them in free agency, signing mostly minimum-salary veterans. The Patriots instead focused on the draft, and came away with mostly defensive players last weekend, though they did take two tight ends in the third round.
Patriots had 10 draft picks.
4 defense
5 offense
1 kicker

I'm no math whiz, but 4 of 10 isn't "most."

So LeBron tweeted about a black man who was shot and killed by two white men, and Jason Whitlock decided to use that to fire off how LeBron was just trolling on Twitter to try and make himself look like a better person than Michael Jordan. It's amazing to me that Whitlock keeps getting work, and that at one point ESPN was going to build an entire sub-site built around his brand and leadership.

Jason Whitlock fired and black twitter is celebrating.
Marchand’s column indicates they were negotiating and couldn’t agree on a contract. Firing has its own connotation and it is typically outside of negotiations falling apart.

Albert Breer is such a douchecanoe. He publicly doubts Adam Jones's claims that racial slurs were directed at him at Fenway. Then he waits until NOW to write a column saying "Oh, I guess I had no fucking idea what I was talking about." Then he gets offended when Bomani Jones @s him with the Red Sox's statement today about racism at Fenway. If you want to prove that you've learned something and become less racially insensitive, just admit you were wrong and apologize.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
~2:45pm today on the FAN, Joe B proudly proclaimed w/r/t CV19: I'm no scientist, but my feeling is if you're gonna get it, then you're gonna get it. Thought to myself as I got out of the car: yeah, a sports talk host knows so much more than virologists and epidemiologists.

First two calls (which I missed) supposedly agreed with Joe. But the caller right after the 3pm break jumped all over him with: how can you say that on the radio with thousands of people listening to you, as it goes against everything the experts are saying?? Joe then explained that he's still wearing a mask everywhere, and social distancing, and not going out socializing, but it's just his opinion/belief if you're gonna get it, youre gonna get it. Caller responded with: why in the world would you wear a mask and social distance if you really believe that you're gonna get it if you're gonna get it? Joe just kept going on that he believes in fate, repeating that he wears a mask and distances. Caller pointed out that his two statements make NO sense when presented in tandem. Joe then came back with, in a rather smartass tone: so are you telling me that if I sat in my basement for 2-3 months and never came out, not even once, never saw anyone, I had no chance of getting it? Caller: YES, if you completely quarantined!!!
