Tough job in the hands of the committee this year. As of right now I would argue that only KU and Baylor truly deserve #1 seeds, but of course there need to be four of them. If Gonzaga and SDSU win out they will likely get the other two, but neither of those are a given. I think teams like Duke, Dayton, and Maryland still have a shot if they win out. But it's... complicated.

Baylor, Zags and SD State all went down on Saturday with the Aztecs being far and away the worst loss of the 3 at home to a blah UNLV team. To me, the 1-seeds seem clear at this point (as of 2/24 anyway) after the SD State loss. Kansas and Baylor are obvious locks while I have Gonzaga in too as there is no shame losing on the road to a really, really good BYU team.......but everyone is taking lightly the fact that Dayton has not lost a game in regulation this year with the two OT losses to Kansas and a solid Colorado team.

1. Kansas (really impressive slaughter of OK State tonight in tough letdown spot)

2. Baylor

3. Gonzaga

4. Dayton

Awful. Coach Sutton is an icon.
I don’t get the Internet regret when public figures die long after they left the arena. The only folks who should really care are family and friends, former teammates and coaches. But for those of us who never knew Eddie Sutton, he left us when he stopped coaching. He lived a full life, died at 84. How is that awful? But maybe he’s your uncle. In that case, my condolences.

Fond memories of the Three Basketeers (Moncrief, Brewer and Delph at Arkansas) and Big Country (Bryant Reeves at OSU)!

Somehow, at Kentucky, inherited a mess and left a different mess. That's a place you would have thought he'd have won big.

Not trying to pick a fight, but are you thinking of Nolan Richardson? He was a Texas HS and JC coaching legend, before following Sutton to Arkansas. Sutton coached at a lot of places but i didnt think he had much of a texas connection.

No, I’m not. I mean coach connections. His students are all over the state.

I hated Olsen, Miles Simon, and that entire team in 97. Big fan of Wayne Turner after meeting him in Chestnut Hill (while he was at Beaver), so rooted for Kentucky/Pitino in the final (/ducks). And then you wonder if he would have stayed at KY if he won which wouldd not have brought all that pain to the Celtics.

Olsen was a good guy though. Jason Terry and others owe him a ton of $ for development.

Fell down a Youtube rabbit hole and watched the 1983-84 Big East championship between Syracuse and Georgetown. Got me thinking about that year in college hoops. Here's the All-American 1st team that year:

Patrick Ewing
Michael Jordan
Hakeem Olajuwon
Wayman Tisdale
Sam Perkins
(Chris Mullin was 2nd team All-American)

Here's what these guys would go on to do:

Ewing: HOF, 11x all-star, 7x all-NBA, 3x all-defense, ROY, 2 olympic gold medals
Jordan: HOF, 14x all-star, 11x all-NBA, 5x MVP, ROY, 9x all-defense, 10x scoring champ, GOAT, 2 olympic gold medals
Olajuwon: HOF, 12x all-star, 12x all-NBA, 9x all-defense, MVP, 1 olympic gold medal
Tisdale: No awards, but had a 13-year NBA career averaging 15.3 points, 6.1 rebounds on 50.5% shooting; twice scored 20+ ppg, 1 olympic gold medal
Perkins: No awards, but had an 18-year NBA career averaging 11.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1 olympic gold medal

I'm trying to think of an All-American team that had a better overall resumé than these guys. I'm not even counting Mullin, who ended up being a 5x all-star, 2x olympic gold medalist, and HOFer.

Here's the game I referred to:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WutCtBQsSe0

Note how much the game has changed. Go to the 7:01 mark to watch this sequence. Pearl drives and gets rejected by Ewing. Michael Jackson of Georgetown gets the ball on a one-on-one fast break opportunity and basically does a sort of Eurostep (before that actually was a thing) and gets called for a travel. Just two steps, with just a little side movement. Refs call a travel. Announcers (Len Berman and Bill Raftery) note the travel and don't question it. Jackson doesn't argue the call. Neither does John Thompson (RIP big guy). They all simply accept that this is a travel, but watch it. It's not even close to a travel by today's standards.

It's just a completely different game today.

The level of play in college basketball was just so much better in the late 80s and early 90s than it is now. Back when COVID cancelled the NCAA Tournament, I spent way too much time watching some tournament games from that era. One of my personal favorites is UNLV vs Georgia Tech from the 1990 Final Four.

Watching Kenny Anderson alone is worth the time (I was so crushed when he didn't go to Syracuse), but you throw in all of the talent on those teams -- Dennis Scott, Brian Oliver, Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Anderson Hunt (who I loved when he was at UNLV), Greg Anthony...It's a fun game.

Only year I can come close with is 1968- Kareem, Elvin Hayes, Pete Maravich, Wes Unseld ...and the 5th guy, Larry Miller, played 7 years in the ABA. Second team notables were Bob Lanier, Calvin Murphy, Lucius Allen and JoJo White.
