I’m out. Why should anyone watch a single game in 2020? This makes them significantly worse.

Last I was this down on a team was 1992.
Because it’s baseball. It’s the Red Sox. And because they’re probably going to be pretty damned good.

Wait so ALL they are getting is Verdugo plus someone from another team? That other someone better be a top-50 prospect or this deal is atrocious.

I'll be interested to see the pieces involved, and whether we got any of the Dodgers' lower level prospects (as they have a number of really interesting guys in the lower levels of the minors).

I'm also completely fine with this move. Mookie is a phenomenal player. He is also a guy who is clearly motivated to get the largest contract possible, and I'm not sure I want to be the team on the hook for that. He generates a ton of value through his legs and defense, and I don't know how that'll age. Looking at his build, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who can pack on additional power to offset a reduction in his speed. The team has been hamstrung by poor drafting and poor signings, and for all the "billionaire" lamentations, they were never going to spend their way to organizational health. The team can still compete this year, and I'll watch them just as much as I would had they kept Mookie.

I’m saddened by this, I knew it was coming and I guess I understand it. But it just sucks. Watching baseball used to be fun, it’s not much that anymore.
Best of luck Mookie and David, you’ll be missed, the two of you.
In the MuddyChickens house, we have (had) a saying: “Everyday is mookie betts day!”. Not today. I’ll keep rooting for the laundry I suppose, but it’s becoming harder and harder.

I never thought I'd see the day where the Red Sox were getting rid of their best players in the prime of their careers. As others have noted, they put themselves in this position and it makes sense. But it doesn't make it any less of a bitter pill.

where I was last at
So the addition of Price resulted in no prospects coming back?

basically no return for Betts?

I can only hope saving a few million $ in taxes for a multi-billion FSG, is worth blowing a hole in your franchise

The hidden downside to this trade is that I'll now pay very little to baseball in 2020, and will probably fill that time by hanging out in V&N.

Lose/lose for everyone.

I agree that trading Mookie, while it sucks, has merit. But trading him and Price, while paying some of the freight for Price, and only getting two players in return? That seems... horrible, unless one of the two is a lot better than Verdugo.

What are the Twins getting in return for their prospect is what I'm confused about.

I once thought quite enthusiastically that I’d never live to see the Red Sox win the World Series. Then, in less than 15 years, I’ve witnessed the occurrence four times. Yeah, I think I’ll get past this okay.

This year likely wasn’t going to happen (WS) and letting Betts walk away for free would have been foolish. Meanwhile, Price’s time in Boston wasn’t go to end well.

I’m looking forward to the pause/re-set year and forthcoming rebuild.

The team can compete? Compete for what?

Passan also confirms Twins:

The Minnesota Twins are the third team in the blockbuster deal with the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers if it passes medical reviews as expected, sources tell @kileymcd and me.

Pitching from the Twins? What pitching? They're already short on pitching as it stands. Here's hoping Heyman has that one wrong, because it does not make sense.
They have good pitching prospects and a pretty loaded system, sounds like it would be a prospect.

It sounds like the LAD/LAA deal is a separate one, and the Twins are the third team in the LAD/BOS deal.

Dustin May better be coming here. This is horseshit if the Sox come out of this with Verdugo and a pitching prospect from the Twins.

Wife just said “Your summer just got a lot simpler.”

Perceptive.

I’m willing to wait and see but don’t see how this winds up being positive unless one count John Henry now being able to wipe his ass with the Benjamins he probably could have parted with at Fenway.
