in a signing day update, the only of Daz's recruits to decomit, Joyner a DE from Conn signed with Minn
so today we signed a WR who decomitted from Minn, Justin Belidoa so right now we are only waiting on 2 for Feb signing day. Both big local tackles with NFL bloodlines, Pyne from Milford and Trapillo fron Norwell/BC High are both in

There was a lot to be said for declining the bowl invite once they decided to fire Daz. These shitty bowl games aren’t money-makers for the schools; the main benefit is the extra month of practice, and I question the value of that with a staff that’s mostly not coming back and presumably dividing their attention between bowl prep and searching for jobs.

That makes sense, but when was the last time that happened? I feel as if Notre Dame refused a 2nd tier (not a third or 4th, like this one) about a decade ago, but it was probably earlier than that
I did a quick Google search. Mizzou declined a bid 4 years ago in the midst of a coaching change following a 5-7 season.

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/mizzou-will-get-bowl-invitation/
The only other non-ND examples I found involved some kind of team disciplinary situation or schools trying to stave off NCAA sanctions by preemptively punishing themselves, so you’re correct that it would’ve been exceedingly unusual for BC to forgo a bowl bid.

It's not fair to the kids to turn it down. Nothing to do with the coaching situation. The kids earned it.

These kids gave one of the most pathetic efforts I’ve ever seen. If you want another game, great. Then act like it. They completely mailed it in. I get they’re not that talented but, holy shit, that was pathetic.

Better get to work, Hafley. Your team has no talent or fire.

Agree with BSF. Clearly those kids quit and there was a division on the team consisting of Daz followers and Daz haters. Brian White called the plays and pulled a Daz 2.0. Can’t get rid of that coaching staff fast enough.

If I’m Hafley I have a meeting next week and play that game tape and tell them every job on the 2 deep is up for grabs. And everyone will be playing from this point forward for a spot on the 2 deep. That was an embarrassment and shows there are bigger problems with the football program than the replacement of a coach will resolve.

Yup. There is clearly a talent issue but these kids consist of guys who were either playing their last game and/or were playing in front of their next head coach. And they looked about as disinterested as you can look. The weather was awful. The crowd nonexistent. We get all that. But that was a great test to see who’s in and who’s out. And they all basically failed. I hope Hafley cleans house. Wouldn’t be sad at all to see 20-30 of these scrubs leave and filled with 5th year seniors. And then Hafley starts getting his guys in there.

Yesterday was absolute rock bottom before the beginning of the Hafley Era. Looking forward to him cleaning house and starting the rebuild.

Thinking they hire the rest of the staff pretty soon. There's some Scott Turner rumors but that's wishful thinking IMO.

as one of the wags in a text chain I'm in with a number of diehards, Hi Bernie, said yesterday 'this is the fitting end of the Spazdzio Error'

we've heard that there was a division in the locker room, and as shown in the mosh pit video it was Daz and the OL vs the rest of the team. none of the plays that they practiced the past three weeks were run, Brian White in his fairwell performance as a BC coach, intriem OC went right to the RRPP playbook. It looked like many of the player were trying not to get hurt.
it made AJ's move to opt out of the game the right one, White would've gotten him fucking killed

The transfer door is WIDE open, come on down!!!

Brian White is such a loser. Carte blanche to do whatever he wanted and he stays conservative. Some football coaches really are gym teacher morons.

He had one game to make an impression. Do you think installing a modern offense in 15 practices with players who have known nothing but Daz’s power-run offense since high school would yield good results? Me neither.

Even with the preseason to prepare and a couple tune-up games against overmatched opponents, I’m expecting some serious bumps in the road on offense next season.

Who cares about results? It was about showing a different mentality. It was a listless performance that obviously won’t matter one bit but still weak nonetheless.

There will absolutely be some serious bumps in the road. Daz left a crap roster. It is devoid of talent and athleticism. Hafley has his work cut out for him.

Looks like Anthony Campanile is going to be the DC, I'm happy with that. Another young guy who is a good recruiter.

You’d expect young men to play this violent game as hard as they can for a coach who’s trying to “show a different mentality” rather than, you know, trying to win the game? I wouldn’t.

Implementing a new system at the beginning of next season with a permanent coach is a whole other matter.

You realize that their next coach was in the stadium watching, right? They weren’t playing for White. This was their first chance to impress the new boss. We can just agree to disagree on this. Ryan Day once called a fake punt against UNC, something that was completely out of character. A lot of teams let loose in bowl games. BC didn’t. I find it weak. You don’t. That’s fine.

Bailey did nothing to disprove him being a change of pace guy versus a feature back. One carry for 11 yards. 7 others for 17 yards.

I agree with the previous posters- if you're not graduating you're auditioning and should be busting your ass to make a good impression. Not too many Eagles did.

Agreed. Hafley is a D minded coach so needs a young gun who can recruit and teach. This gives a sense of his plan as well to try to recruit the northeast.

Also rumor of a strong transfer local recruit as well.

I wonder how much of the D being so much worse this year had to do with Campanile leaving and how much was the loss of Denis and ZAllen and others.

Great move. Good continuity from 2 years ago while at the same time, obviously great change at the top.

I think it is really important to get someone like Campanile on staff, maybe a couple of guys (young, good recruiters). If Hafley is as successful as we all hope he is, he’s likely gone in 3-4 years, and it would be good to have a natural successor in place.

Having a couple days to think about it, the game was probably a good thing.

Remember the last game of the Gerry Faust era, ND getting humiliated by Miami and Jimmy Johnson; it seemed to serve the Irish well the next few seasons.

Kobay White to the transfer portal. Figure we’ll see a lot of these. Drain the swamp...although I actually liked him.

He'd be a grad transfer and therefore eligible in the fall? I think a lot of redshirt juniors in his position would be prone to do that. Especially with the quarterback situation at BC not in favor of any receiver having a big year.

I don’t see the players on hand as “the swamp.” Addazio didn’t put them in a position to succeed.

In the case of the players who are good enough to transfer to other P5 programs, I’d argue that the program needs them more than they need the program. A few departures are inevitable, and probably best for all concerned, but the Hafley era will be doomed from the outset if he doesn’t keep most of the 20 or so best returning players. Even the best coaching won’t coax more than 3 or 4 wins out of a team of 18 and 19 year olds, and even Nick Saban couldn’t convince elite recruits to join a 3-win team in Chestnut Hill. Hafley needs the incumbents (or most of them) to buy in.

Fortunately, I don’t think a mass exodus is terribly likely. Even if the players liked Daz, and I assume most did, the silent majority of them had to chafe at how he didn’t trust them to make plays on offense and cost them games with boneheaded decisions. A few guys will make the NFL, and I’m sure a few others mistakenly think they will, but for most of them, this will be their last football team, and they know it. They want to win more than anyone. And they can see as plainly as anyone that Daz didn’t put them in the best position to do that. Hafley is more likely to enjoy a honeymoon than to face a mass exodus.

There was absolutely zero team speed this year. While I agree with the Daz point, it was blatantly obvious that the team’s speed and athleticism, especially on D, was seriously insufficient.

Speed at skill positions is a relatively fixable problem; you can find transfers, or even run true freshmen out there if need be. It’s much harder to upgrade the offensive and defensive lines quickly — even elite 18 and 19 year olds will get their asses kicked by other teams’ unremarkable 22 and 23 year olds, and because so many of these guys redshirt their first year, transfers are harder to come by.

Fortunately, line play can be more easily coached up. So Hafley will be fine, but he does need to retain most of those players.

Even though the performance wasn’t great, not overly concerned with OL. I think there is some decent talent there. Don’t feel the same about DL. But the D is Hafley’s thing so he’ll figure it out. Next year is a transition year in any event. Even making bowl game would be nice accomplishment given where the QB situation and other roster issues currently stand.

Any word on OC? That’s the final piece to this puzzle.

Steve Trapilo's son is one of BC's top recruits and Milford's Kevin Pyne should anchor a decent OL in the near future. But the OL is not usually BC's biggest problem.

Sounds like Campinele is heading to Rutgers. But BC has hired both coordinators, Frank Cignetti Jr as OC and QB coach, and Tem Lukaba as DC.

Cignetti has a decent track record and Feldman thinks it's a great hire, but seems like a safe pick. Lukaba has coached in both college and the NFL, was the linebackers coach for the Bengals this season. He's young, and I'm reading some good things but i really know absolutely nothing about him. Coached under Schiano, Chip Kelly, and Kyle Shanahan.

Cignetti has coached Aaron Rodgers, Sam Bradford, and Eli Manning. He has tons of experience which will be nice. Now he needs to hire a younger staff.

Do we envision Cignetti running a more traditional pro style offense? If so, a dual threat QB is not a necessity. Am I setting the bar too low hoping for a Paul Peterson type for the next year or two?

Cignetti to me is part of the good old boys network run by his father - never sticks anywhere very long and was unemployed last year, no one wanted anything to do with him.

Lubaka would have felt like a good get if he had stayed at MSU and they had another great year....and I am sure Hafley is going to be the defacto DC anyways, so not as worried about it.

But I think there's a little shine off Hafley when he is supposedly an up and comer with visions of taking this job and turning it into a job with a legit stud program in the future and he gets coordinators in extremely low demand.
