AP would be a great trade/release pick up candidate if any of the RBs get/continues to be hurt.

Although struggling this year, he rushed for 1,024 yards in 2018 to go along with 20 receptions on 26 targets.

We know BB loves to pick up once top-tier vets on their sunset years. Potatoes are obviously not going anywhere. HCoNEP has expressed admiration for the future HoF RB on numerous occasions. AP himself said he wanted to play for another 4 years just last year and would obviously like a chance to go to a Super Bowl.

AP would fit in well with McD's schemes and I would love to see him in a Pats uniform.
No thanks. AP seems toasted. He got off to a good start last year, but was mediocre at best for 7 of the last 9 games. (And that's just the on-field side of things).

I don't think we need to do the salary cap gymnastics required to add someone like AP when we have Harris as a healthy scratch.

Posted this in the game thread, but fits better here:

A Watson release puts the available cap room in the Sanu or Vernon Davis neighborhood.

Has there been talk from beat guys that Watson is being released?
I posted this in the Game Thread, but in the pre-game show on the radio yesterday Zolak was speculating that Watson was done, and they were certainly treating it as something he heard from someone in the organization.

So what would "Watson+" look like to get us to Diggs? or Another "high tier" wr (Green etc)?

Watson ERoberts and Ebner cuts? Does that free up anything meaningful?

They would not be cutting Roberts and Ebner. If anything happens, it'll be in the form of extensions that allows the Pats to spread the cap hit to future years. They may not want to do this since they have a ton of guys heading for FA this offseason.

After watching KC this year, while it would be nice to get Diggs, it seems pretty clear if we can ensure by year-end that the running game is functioning well and the defense/punting is in the vicinity of where it is now, this team should have a great shot to get to the Super Bowl again. Right now the line seems to be a pretty big issue still with a lot of hope that Wynn comes back and/or that Dante will be able to create some more miracles.

I am not enamored with Roberts (which I realize doesnt mean anything). And he has only played 23.6% of defensive snaps (But has played 46.5 of ST snaps so yea we would need to do some rejiggering of STs) So the coaches look at him as almost exclusively as depth.

As far as LB depth you have Collins, HT and KVN as your three. You then have Bentley as Depth and Calhoun can go to the outside and shift KVN or Collins back inside if you needed too. 5 Deep when you often play with only 2 (because of Big Nickel) is fine.

Roberts has a 2 Million dollar hit (2,025,000) with 25 k of dead money. So his cap to prod/usage seems off and a point of opportunity.

And Ebner hasnt played at all this year. (And wasnt he hurt for alot of Last year??)

Lose 3 Guys who have provided not a hell of a lot..... and gain what? 5 Million in cap space? Whats out there for 5 Million? Maybe theres no options worth it. But seems like a relatively painless way to gather 5ish million of cap space.

I agree that to the extent the Pats trade for someone, it should be an offensive lineman (and/or a blocking TE). Pretty much throughout the BB/Brady era it’s been the case that the Pats can be extremely successful with a mediocre WR corps if their line is sturdy, and that the Pats routinely struggle if their line isn’t sturdy, even with a good receiving corps.

I thought some of the knocks on AP was that he fumbles a lot and was a poor pass blocker. Not sure those things would lend themselves well to a NE team.

Just looking at the last few years. His final full season in Minnesota (2015) he had 7 fumbles on 327 carries. In 2017 between Arizona and New Orleans he had 3 fumbles on 156 carries. Last year he was a bit better with 3 in 251 carries. Can't quite find fumble rates for RBs in general.

Ebner has played this year. In the 3 games he was active for he played more than 70% of ST snaps, including nearly 90% of them against the Jets.

I don't know if this is true. In 2013 they had a pretty good OL of Solder / Mankins / Wendell / Connolly / (Vollmer & Cannon) but the O struggled amidst a bevy of receiver (TE, RB, and WR) injuries. 2006 boasted basically the same Light / Mankins / Koppen / Neal / Kaczur lineup that 2007 did (Kaczur missed 7 games in 2006, but Neal missed 8 in 2007), but they scored 200 more points when they upgraded the receivers.

Mea Culpa, I saw the 0s for Defense and Offense and thought it was the ST Column.

You are not enamored, but the team and the players are, as he was voted a captain this year.

OJ Howard is an interesting name from Miguel's list. He's making a little over $1M in TB and they are sitting 3rd in their division at 2-3. I'm not sure Arians is ready to throw in the towel just yet, but Howard hasn't been targeted much this year and Arians' offense traditionally hasn't featured the TE much. He's a decent blocker (not great inline), but would offer an athletic pass-catching option for TB12.

I'd also be interested in their backup TE, Cameron Brate, but he's got a $7M cap hit, which is far too expensive for what he'd offer.

Agreed. Howard is the guy from that list that makes a ton of sense apart from the WR wet dreams. Fills both a short term and long-term need, low cap hit, and seems to be on the outs with Arians. Not sure if a 3 gets it done though.

yeah but we may never have a better chance to trade for Fitz.

or another chance period, as he may well retire after this year.

Fitz would be perfect. Sounds like they have zero interest in trading him and he is unlikely to force the issue. Tons of useful guys on that list though. Too bad that Mike Brown is going to Mike Brown things with AJ.

Contract is still an issue, but with the Redskins making a change, perhaps their view on trading Williams does as well.

FWIW, a couple of decent reporters here now think he will be moved pretty quickly.

Edit. The game plan in Washington should be obvious. They ought to deal every non-youngin for whatever return they can get. Including Trent Williams, vets like Ryan Kerrigan, Josh Norman, their spare healthy non-rookie QB, and so forth.

Why do we think Eifert has any value? He signed as an UFA for a 1M base salary this past offseason.

And he hasn’t produced shit in four years.

does the six really get it done? I would think at that price other teams might be in as well.

His Jalen Ramsey trade is funny too as the Chiefs do not have a 2020 first-round pick, Seattle has that one.
No, the Seahawks got the Chiefs 2019 1st rounder and their 2020 2nd rounder.

If the Pats could add legit help at OL, WR, or TE, which spot would you guys prefer they get the help? They should be getting back Wynn and Harry to help with the OL and WR positions, so TE seems to me to be the spot. That said, if the Pats could doubly improve the OL to the point where it's similar to last year, with that defense, I think the skill positions would be perfectly fine.

Offensive Line, no questions. Four of Washington's 9 sacks on the season came against the Patriots and Brady was off against Buffalo. Add in the stagnation of the running game and bolstering the OL seems like an imperative, especially when you consider the injuries the OL has already suffered. Going on recent history I could not feel comfortable relying on Wynn without some injury insurance. Brady with a cleaner pocket and more time can make his WR and TE better.

Peter King (ducks) had a couple bullet points on potential Pats-Diggs trade. So no chance that’s happening.
Diggs is the kind of player that you throw in a 1st, 4th, and swap of another pick to bring in.

Not just the talent but fit*, age (25), health, contract (signed through 2023), and annual cap hit ($15m/yr with ever increasing team cap numbers).

I'd much rather aggressively try to make this happen rather than an older & injured vet like Green or Sanders.

* PFF calls for a Diggs-to-Pats Trade, citing the following:

"For a relatively small receiver, Diggs is one of the best in the game at catching contested targets, snagging 34 of them since the start of the 2017 season, the sixth-most in football. With his route running, moves after the catch and ability to win contested passes, Diggs could have elite production when paired with Brady"

i hope I am wrong but I still feel like is is way more likely he looks at a couple lower level guys with the hope that Harry gives us another tool later.

Do we really think there is an OT available who could step in an produce at the level we need? Conceptually, OT makes a lot of sense but I’m skeptical that we can get any material upgrades unless Washington gives in on Trent Williams.

I feel like WR is still the answer for me. Gordon can’t be relied on. Edelman is banged up already. Dorsett is more of a WR3/4. Harry is a complete unknown and Meyers is more of a project.

A guy like Diggs, Sanders, or AJ would really elevate the offense.

Any good centers that might be available, who are on the last year of their contract? I assume Andrews will be back next season healthy so there's no long-term need, but Karras just isn't great and if we could upgrade there, and get Wynn back, that would significantly improve the OL, IMO. Of course, it would help if Cannon played like he's capable of playing. Seems like he's really underperformed this season.

I feel like Sanders makes the most sense on a number of levels, but I also wonder-> what are we expecting from a 32 y/o Sanders? He's not a WR1 any more. I dont want to give up the pieces we would for a true WR1 if we bring in Sanders. if the price is good, Sanders is a good get

Sanders has had some good games this year...with Flacco as his QB. He’s past his prime due to age and injury but he can still help. I would think that he could be had for a mid round pick. Agree that he’s probably the most likely option if they make a move. Diggs and AJ are not happening.

I haven't heard any rumors on this front but a trade target that makes sense to me is Falcons TE Austin Hooper, who had a pretty good year last year and is really breaking out this season for a bad team but will be an UFA in the offseason. He is more of a receiving TE than a blocker, but some reports at least seem to suggest he's made enough strides in the blocking department to be passable as an every down type TE. The Falcons might see him as a building block but he's going to be an expensive one for a team that clearly needs a rebuild. I would probably offer our true 2nd rounder for him, with the thinking that you probably get a 3rd round comp pick for him if he leaves but that he might be a guy you want to franchise (TE tag is pretty reasonable) or extend.

IMO, you can improve the team more by adding a TE than by adding a WR, because the replacement guy is just a lot worse at the TE spot and there are fewer internal options that might improve at TE than at WR.

Sanders has looked much better coming back from injury than Eifert. I liked Eifert a couple years ago but he looks like dust now. TE seems to be more of a need than WR, but in terms of a pass catcher, and prior interest, Sanders is the most likely trade.

The problem with acquiring a center is the learning curve in the system, isn't it? Andrews' value wasn't necessarily in being a stout blocker, it was in setting protection, getting timing right with Brady, knowing where and when to help, knowing his secondary role on plays (he was always downfield doing something when a play gets extended), etc. There's just a tremendous amount of knowledge any acquire-ee would have to absorb before they'd start outperforming even Karras in the role.
