The Twins are 30-13 vs Chicago, Detroit and KC, and .500 vs the other playoff contenders. They don’t do anything exceptionally well except hit homeruns at a record pace. Their playoff failures are well known the last 20 years or so.

Once they run into good pitching in October, and they will face either NY or Houston in the Division Series, they’re probably toast.

great to see Carrasco pitch today.

the Rockies were swept at home by the Pirates. they are freefalling, they have no pitching again just like that.

I feel like the Twins could give the Yankees a long series, all jokes about their awful recent history against them aside. They mashed the Yanks at Target, just average pitching would have been enough. I think the Twins' pitching is at least average overall and the Yanks' stupidly hot minor leaguers are cooling off.

it also feels like after a couple years of "chalk" making it to the WS (1 seeds, and lets' face it, the Dodgers last year basically were more of a 1 seed than the upstart Brewers), we're due for some short sample size fuckery that is the playoffs.

Not sure about this, Berrios has been getting hammered and Perez has a 6.24 ERA since late May. I do agree that their lineup is great and could really wear out a pitching staff in a short series. Honestly I'm not really rooting for any specific opponent, whoever NY plays will be tough.

Their pitching sucks. The Yankees would score destroy them.

It's criminal they didn't add a starting pitcher at the deadline. If they win more than one game against the Astros or Yankees they should go ahead and throw a parade.

For all the shit DD has taken, I think he knew Kimbrel was done.
DD did offer the QO, so I don't believe he thought Kimbrel was done. If 3/45 was on the table then, I think Kimbrel might still be wearing a Red Sox uniform. And if he was, I expect he'd be pitching better than he has in Chicago. Can't really discount the fact that he didn't have a spring training.

I assumed he offered with the 99% probability he wouldn’t take it. Guess we will never know on that.

As for Kimbrel, we will definitely find out next spring. Because this Kimbrel looks exactly like the one from last October.

Absolutely false. Prior to yesterday (a non-save situation), he was unscored upon in 15 of his prior 17 appearances with a 2.30 ERA, 22 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, and 12 saves in 13 opportunities. He certainly appeared to have righted the ship.

Sox just aren't getting help. Orioles naturally lose in extras to Tampa.

Incidentally, the day the Trop gets imploded will be a good day for baseball.

Saw this in an MLB article on cool stats from this season:

1--Astros have issued 0 intentional walks.
2--The Angels may not have a pitcher reach 100 IP. That hasn't happened in the modern era. Trevor Cahill has a shot.
3--The Angels have no pitchers with 20 starts and probably won't have one.
4--Juan Soto has a chance to finish season with a career OPS+ of 145. Only Cobb, Mantle, and Ott have done that prior to their age 21 season with 1000 plate appearances.
5--Bryan Reynolds has a BABIP of .415. Only Ruth, Sisler, Hornsby, Cobb, and Heilman have had higher ones
6--#8 hitters in lineups are on pace for nearly 600 HRs. In 1992, cleanup hitters hit 607.
7--Bellinger has 44 HRs off of 44 different pitchers

Oh man, the Mets broke open the game against the Nats with 5 in the top of the 9th to go up 10-4.

Bottom of the 9th:

Robles 1B
Kendrick fly out
Turner 2B (10-5)
Cabrera 1B
Rendon 1B (10-6)
Soto 1B
Zimmerman 2B (10-8)
Suzuki HR (11-10 walkoff win, 7 in the 9th)

I said it before, but who woulda thunk Edwin Diaz would be what kept the Mets out of the playoffs?

I checked the AL Reliever of the Month earlier today because Chapman won it for the second time this year and I wanted to see who else had, and I saw that Diaz won this FOUR TIMES last season. This year he was really good for the first two months, but since then he has allowed 28 ERs in 29 innings, 10 home runs.

I know saves aren’t the best metric, but Diaz had a dominant if not all-time type season last year. I know the Mets defense is bad, but he’s really come off the rails as the season has progressed. No idea if it’s head stuff or overuse from last year or what, but I remember at the beginning of the season people were wondering why the Mets would acquire a dominant closer when they’d likely have too few leads to protect.

Moving the Line
Nats became the first team to allow 5+ runs in the top of the 9th but score even more runs in the bottom half to walk off since the Red Sox on 6/18/1961 against the Senators.

1) Unprecedented since IBBs were first recorded officially in 1955.
3) Also holds true for the 1884 Kansas City Cowboys of the Union Association, led by Ernie Hickman's 17, albeit in only 79 games.
5) If you include the 19th century, you also add Delahanty (x2), Burkett (x2), Force (.076 ISO!), Anson, Barnes (x3), Duffy, McVey, Meyerle (rookie and all-time mark at .480).

Predicting Mets moves is impossible, but they can't really trade him. They gave up so much for him just last winter, plus he is going to get a pretty big arb salary despite his terrible season because he had big save seasons the two years before.

Also he got removed from the closer role a month or so ago, Lugo is the closer but he pitched the 8th tonight when it was 5-4 and then the Mets scored 5 in the top of the inning so they took Lugo out, figuring it was safe. It wasn't.

So much for storybook endings. After the Indians took a 5-2 lead on the White Sox with a couple 2-out walks and a Roberto Perez home run, Carlos Carrasco gave up 4 runs with 2 out in the 8th to lose 6-5. It feels like Carrasco just ended Cleveland's season. They play too many good teams (whom they seldom beat) this month to be anything less than perfect against the dreck of the AL Central.

Last year Daniel Palka was one of the worst outfielders I've ever seen, and this year his bat has caught up with that level of incompetence. He's now 1-for-53 on the season (.019).

Useless Angels couldn't hold a 6-1 lead against Oakland. Oakland scored 7 in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th.

Seattle was up 5-0 in the 1st and 7-0 after 2 in Houston tonight, but it went to extra innings tied at 8, SEA was a strike away in the 11th up 9-8 but Tucker singled in the tying run, and then Brantley blasted a walkoff in the 13th, 11-9. Good job Mariners.

And last night the Astros got a run on a messed up pickoff with runners on the corners.

Rays win again, 5-3 over T.O. 9-1 in their last 10.

Glasnow back tomorrow. Will start/open and go 2-3 innings. Snell threw 1 inning in AAA in his first rehab start tonight.

the surge we were hoping the Red Sox to make has gone to the D-backs. now only 1.5 back of the Cubs for the 2nd WC spot.

the D-backs record is a game worse than the Red Sox, who are all but eliminated.

Houston with 16 runs through 6 innings against the Mariners. They also have 16 hits from 11 different batters, 10 of which are doubles. Yordan Alvarez has 3 of them. Gerritt Cole has allowed one hit, a home run, in 7 innings with 13 K's. Felix Hernandez's ERA climbs to 6.96.

Teams to score 20 runs and allow no more than 1 hit in the same game:

6/21/1871 - Boston Red Stockings vs. Fort Wayne Kekiongas (21-0 score, Al Spalding starting)
9/08/2019 - Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners (21-1 score, Gerrit Cole starting)

So, the first time since "major league" baseball was less than 2 months old.

That same Kekiongas team a few years earlier won a game 80-29, hitting 12 HRs. I’m fascinated by baseball between say 1866 and 1900.

Jack Flaherty has basically been prime Pedro for the second half of the season. Hitters have an OPS of .443 against him in 11 starts.

Big Astros/A's series starting tonight, the Astros are making a statement. Greinke vs. Fiers, it is 10-0 Astros in the 2nd and the Astros have six home runs already.
