The 2019-2020 season is upon us. I know there is a lot of excitement right now, mostly due to a 10 win season last year, the emergence of Sam Ehlinger as an actually quarterback, and the bowl win over Georgia.

Like most, I’m most concerned about the defense, especially in the Big 12 where offense reigns supreme. Very few returning starters, and lots of untested talent. I see this unit as one that struggles early but improves as they gain experience. Of course, week 2 is against LSU and week 5 is the RRR, so they’ll have to gel quickly.

On offense, I just hope big Sam has the weapons around him. Last year, there were times that they were over-reliant on the Texas QB, especially his running ability. Not sure how much they can allow him to keep taking that beating without getting hurt.

There are some tough games on the calendar. Besides the LSU and OU game, at Iowa State and at TCU will be tough tests, and games in Morgantown and Waco will be tricky.

I’m hoping for at least 9 wins, along with a fight for the Big 12 Championship Game. That would require no slip ups and a win over LSU, OU, TCU or ISU. A return to national relevance is great. Tons of question marks for sure, but if things break right Texas could where we all want them to be. What say the rest of you Longhorn fans?

I don't know if it'll help you feel better, but the RRR gave is the 6th game and 7th week of the season (La Tech, LSU, Rice, Ok St, BYE, WVU, OU), not week 5.

I might be too close and have lost any hope of perspective, but I see a 10-2 type season. I think they lose one of LSU/Ou and a random WTF type game (@TCU and home for OK St make me the most nervous).

Texas is one more year away from having the kind of depth they really need. If they have good injury luck in key areas this year, they can make a run at the playoff. If Ellinger goes down, it'll be a real struggle, but most teams would say that for QB1. I think Texas is vulnerable at RB depth, LB depth, and quality OL depth (losing Cosmi or Shackleford would be devastating). On the flip side, WR and DB are crazy deep (though youth at CB is a concern). I think the DL is deep, but the best talent is young and will need another year to be high level (though Coburn might get there a year early - he's a stud).

Bottom line - I'm a believer that Herman is the real deal. When coaches who are the real deal take over programs, the progression tends to be:
Year 1 - improvement from the year that got the previous coach fired, lots of roster turnover and poor depth. Usually 500ish.
Year 2 - jump in wins, but most games are close. Recruiting is on the upswing and culture is taking room.
Year 3 - start blowing doors off people, competing for conference, but not quite at the top level
Year 4 and beyond - hit your stride, sustained excellence.

Herman has followed that pattern so far, and the team pretty clearly over achieved last year. Herman lucked out that he came in the same year as freshman Ellinger, who was solid to Texas regardless of coaching change. I'll be disappointed if Texas doesn't blow out a lot of schools this season. I expect they will (subject to the injury caveats).

If Texas can win the conference and flirt with the playoff, I think they are primed to really have a killer 2021 year recruiting. The state of Texas has a bumper crop of elite players and UT has already gotten a lot of high quality commits. They will put a choke hold on the state with a big season and really prime themselves for a sustained run.

Having typed all this, I imagine this means Ellinger hurts his shoulder, they play a walk on at RB due to attrition, the CB's aren't ready for prime time and they play the Texas Bowl. :eyeroll:

Herman really is building it the right way. Line depth concerns me this year, maybe moreso than secondary depth, but Hand is working miracles.

I think defense takes a while to gel, the LSU game should be a good snapshot of what we have this season.

I see a repeat type of performance from last year, but the wins more comfortable. The offense should put up points in spades - Ehlinger is legit.

Do they even have any healthy RBs on the roster? The growing list of injuries is a real concern, particularly with the aforementioned depth questions. Nevertheless, I only vaguely remember the last time we went into a season with even a shred of excitement and expectation so this year is clearly a major improvement.

As long as Ehlinger stays healthy (big caveat, unfortunately), they should be competitive in every game. Funny how this time last year I wasn't sold on him. And I've never been more happy to have been so wrong.

Ingram's injury doesn't seem like it's a big longterm issue, right?

Not that I'm aware of. In fact, it seems he's expected to play against LaTech. But they're awfully thin at that position right now and with him slightly banged up already, they're going to want to pull him early if they get a decent enough lead.

RB depth is, indeed, scary. Ingram had a bone bruise and has been back to a full participant at practice for the last week or so. Whittington has a nagging groin injury related to a high school injury. It flares up time to time, but he has been a full participant at practice. Both Ingram and Whittington have had no contact jerseys in practice the last week, as the staff doesn't want to take any chances. Young and Kirko are out for several more weeks - Kirko should be back around Okie St or WVU. Young may be more mid-season. Things were so bad that they took the 3rd string QB who was going to redshirt (Roshon Johnson) and have moved him to 3rd string RB, even though he never played the position in high school (though he was a running QB).

They are in a weird spot this week. After back to back losses to Maryland to open the season, and a young defense with many new starters, the Texas offense really needs to make a statement. At the same time, with RB depth so terrible and a massive game with LSU the following week, they really need to minimize hits to Ellinger and the 2 RB's. Last year everyone was frustrated when Texas would take the air out of the ball in the second half once they had a lead, which led closer scores and a feeling they were just holding on. This year they should be able to keep their foot on the accelerator - and all things being equal I think they would - but with the RB depth issues being what they are, they may feel the need to slow down the pace and grind out the clock if they get a second half lead.

When a new coach takes over after a change that’s long overdue, sometimes years 2 and 3 are a bit of a step back, as the upperclassmen are recruits from the death throes of the old regime. I don’t think the situation Herman inherited was as bad as, say, what Jim Harbaugh inherited at Michigan, but I do think it will take Herman a few years to build the line strength that all your perennial contenders have. That said, I fully agree that Herman is the real deal, and I’m really happy for the diehard Longhorn fans who have suffered with this team for the past decade or so.

With the announcement that Whittington is out for around six weeks, the running back depth chart now consists of Keaontay Ingram, a converted QB, and a converted LB (both freshmen). It would be a massive understatement to say the situation is not ideal.

At least the cornerbacks didn't look over matched against an inferior opponent, right? RIGHT??? But seriously, I consider it a minor miracle that the line opened up with the Horns as only a 4-point dog.

Yea it’s scarily thin. RoJo however I think can be a pretty good option, he’s built like a RB moreso than a traditional QB and ran a TON in high school.

I'm not so much worried about his ability to run the ball but all the other stuff a running back should do, like protection schemes and actually doing the dirty work of blocking. Last thing we need is for Ehlinger to get killed because one of the running backs pressed into duty missed a blocking assignment.

that was the one thing I was pleasantly surprised with Johnson's play on Saturday night. He showed the ability to pick up some blitzes from the RB spot. For a guy who is new to the position (a massive qualified, to be sure), I think he is actually well suited to be a quick study on that aspect due to the fact that 1) he was an early enrollee and 2) as a QB, he'd be tasked with reading coverages and identifying blitzes. He's already been working on that in his QB development, so doing it from the RB position is, in some ways, much easier.

Sure, you're probably right. But he is still a freshman, so he isn't that experienced. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Go figure, I thought the inexperience on defense would be the biggest concern heading into the LSU game. That is not the case in reality; at least for me.

Might have been the worst special teams game in Texas’ history (yes I am not forgetting Charlie’s 3 blocked FG edition in Stillwater), and I think half the starting D is now injured.

But they hung on to beat Okie Light finally.

Yes that was as brutal a victory as you will see. Good thing we have a week off to recover. The Sterns and Green injuries are particularly concerning. Without them the secondary is paper thin.

I saw Sterns at the UT soccer game today wearing a huge brace. From what I hear, I am skeptical about his return this season. Hoping for the best.

And Green will be out for a while with a dislocated shoulder. I hope Foster and Overshown are close because things are about to get dire; Oklahoma must be licking their chops to have at this MASH unit of a secondary. The offense will probably have to score 60 to have a chance to win.

Josh Thompson likely out for the year with a broken foot (8-10 weeks), Jalen Green out for a month with the dislocated shoulder. Still no word on Sterns.

That turned out to be a very costly win.

My guess is Sterns is out for the year too.

Good luck holding OU to less than 65. They can outscore everyone else on the schedule at least ....

That's pretty much where I'm at. They'll need to score 60+ to be competitive against Oklahoma. The rest of the schedule is workable, for the reason you stated.

anyone going?
GF and I went a couple of seasons ago, and man it was fucking miserable. They have painted the seat numbers closer together now so they can pack more people in, but the overall stadium design is still from the 1930s, plus there are eight million people at the State Fair. After melting in our seats for four hours (although that shouldn’t be an issue with an 11:00 am start this year), it literally took us more than an hour just to exit the damn Cotton Bowl there were so many damn people in there. Then it took us another hour to get to the DART train station, which resembled the Tokyo metro at rush hour. One of the worst game experiences I’ve ever had. So no, we are going to watch from the comfort of my apartment or the nearest bar.

Oh, and fuck OU.

I went to the fair last year during the game, but didn't get inside the stadium. I had my grade school aged kids with me, and it was hot as hell, but I managed to catch a good chunk of the game (and pretty much the entire 4th quarter) in between doing fair stuff. I enjoyed the experience, and watching the game winning FG right outside the stadium was something I'll remember for a long time. We met up with my wife after the game and did fair stuff for the rest of the afternoon while she was coming down from the rush, so we didn't get caught in quite the same crush of humanity leaving.

This year supposedly someone is giving me tickets, though I won't be 100% convinced until they are in my hands. I'll be at the fair regardless.

That is precisely why I'll likely never go back to the game. The one time I went was pretty much exactly the same experience, with the only difference being that we had tailgated so we hung out in the parking lot for like 2 hours to let the traffic dissipate. Since I'm no longer in my 20s (or my 30s for that matter), that's just not going to be an option anymore. I'd much rather watch the game at home or at the bar than deal with that misery. I had a blast but being blind drunk for most of it might have had a thing or two to do with the experience.

Coincidentally, that's why also why I refuse to go to the Fair. The crowds are miserable and it's not really my scene anyway.
Oh, and fuck OU.
Also this.

True story: at the OU game as a student in 1987, we were getting curb stomped by the gooners (we were led by the magnificent none-other-than future husband of Mary Lou Retton, a certain Shannon Kelly), when my brother reached for his flask of Wild Turkey from his ropers. A stunning blonde co-ed in a green top sitting behind us asked if she could have a belt. Losing something like 44-3, we weren't paying much attention to the game so I struck up a conversation with her. She ended up giving us a ride home, and I got her number scribbled in lipstick on a piece of scrap paper from the floor of her shitbox VW Rabbit. We ended up forming an amazing romance over the next four months. But since I am an incurable idiot I ended up, for reasons that only a licensed therapist can explain, dumping her for someone else. That marriage ended catastrophically a few years ago, and I called the stunning blonde ex-GF out of the blue.

We are getting married next year, 33 years after we met at the OU game. I proposed at that game two years ago, in the same seats we sat in when we met.

So as much as I hate Oklahoma, I do have to thank them for introducing me to the most beautiful and extraordinary woman in the world.

But yeah, fuck OU.

Hey, any of you clowns actually live in or near Austin? I just booked a "golf" trip with 3 friends for 11/1-11/4. The 'Horns are on a bye, but apparently, that's Formula 1 Texas weekend in Austin, so it should be interesting. If any of you have any connections or know of any great golf courses down there, I'd be in your debt (i'll get you out up here at Andover for a round if you're ever in the area). We've got a call into Rob Oppenheim and should be able to get onto TPC San Antonio, but I know the guys really want to play Austin CC too...Any other thoughts?

And yes, I'm a little sorry for breaking up your thread. :)

Unfortunately, that's all I got. No insider info from me on the golf scene in Austin.

Yes the likelihood of our story working out is like one in a gazillion trillion. But it did.

But back to the main event. That loss is on Herman 100%. As bad as Orlando’s defense has been, they held their shit together pretty well today. But the offense - what the fuck? Nine sacks. 100 yards rushing, most of it on that one drive where Roschon scored. Just pitiful. Looked totally unprepared. Season basically over. Hope they sack up and don’t drop one to Baylor or Tech.

They’re losing @ ISU and maybe even vs Baylor.

They're not very good - should’ve seen it after the offense had no rhythm against a poor OSU team.

Herman needs to revitalize playcalling cause it’s horrible.

And maybe coach tackling? Just a thought.

Most of our starters on defense were out. Today was a perfect storm and we still won. Unless Urban Meyer or the like are coming I think we need to keep him. Without Sam tho I think we lose.

Well I've seen enough. It's time to clean house. This staff just isn't going to cut it. I don't even want to hear about the injuries on defense because the team overall has taken a major step backward this year. This team won't beat Kansas State at home (which sucks cause I'm supposed to go to that game) and they sure as fuck won't beat Baylor in Waco. Doubtful they beat Iowa State either which probably means they'll go into the Tech game needing to win to become bowl eligible. That's quite the indictment of a team that started top 10 and with playoff aspirations.

It’s not fixable with the coach. Deloss’s calculation to play hardball with and ultimately blow up the old conference is one of the worst examples of hubris that inherently puts UT at a competitive disadvantage indefinitely.

We were the Joneses.
