Looks like we're getting The Clapper calling the plays with Kellen Moore being promoted to OC and Jon Kitna coming in to coach QBs.

I don't know when Jerrah lost his nuts about coaching changes, but it's quite something to behold. You have a chance to get a fresh outlook on the offense and just shuffle the chairs around.
he does not change because Garret lets jones do anything he wants as we have seen with jimmy and bill looking back on it

jerry shouild had kept jimmy for 94 then fired him or traded him to Car for their 1st and 2nd in 95
this way dallas wouild had got 3 in a row
switzer wouild been in play in 95
then if jerry got a re-do after barry he wouild went with butch davis the miami hurrcanes coach
then after 3 years of 8-8 aikman leaves after 02 bill p comes in utill 2006 jerry still picks wade for 2007 as dallas beats NYG in 2007 but loses to NE in SB 42
then jerry still hire garrest after 2009

Is there any precedent for an NFL player retiring, sitting out a full year, then coming back as an active player?

I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to jump into that pool of injury and fatigue after tasting gentler waters.
its 50-50 on if wittien makes the roster unless they use him for RZ 3rd downs only

Watching the Cowboys become the NFL's most gutless team in free agency has been quite the transformation

There's a huge bill coming due next offseason. If anything, it's quite refreshing to see them practice some restraint for once. Heaven knows we've seen our share of Brandon Carr type contracts that just don't work out and the last thing we need is for a key homegrown player to walk because of a bad free agent contract.

Nice trade by Dallas getting Robert Quinn from Miami for a 2020 6th round pick today. He isn't what he was when he was in his early 20s, but he's still a productive pass rusher and has started 30 of the last 32 games he played in for the Rams and Dolphins, which is big when you've been counting on flakes like Gregory and Irving on the d-line.

Not sure what to the think of the Cowboys' draft this year. Obviously no first-rounder due to the Amari Cooper trade (which has clearly and surprisingly been a good return)...

My thoughts:

- I really liked that they continue to focus on the lines. McGovern could be a steal in the 3rd round and with Frederick coming back, Dallas might have the deepest and most talented O-line in the league...certainly top 3. The Cowboys have been killing it on their line picks the past 6-7 years, with the exception of maybe Gregory (who can't stay on the field).

- Hill in the 2nd round has good talent but many thought he had question marks from an attitude/consistency standpoint so was projected more for early/mid 3rd. But Marinelli seems to get every one of their D-linemen to play their asses off so I come away liking the pick. This guy could be an animal if Marinelli motivates him.

- Didn't like that they waited until 6th round to address safety, but they seem a lot happier with Woods and Heath than the experts do. So maybe they know better.

-Interesting that they grabbed two RBs. Maybe they plan on giving Zeke a few more breathers on 3rd down and longs? They did ride him hard last year.

Heath is terrible. He's perfectly capable for filling in due to an injury but he's long past the point of being overexposed. I understand not wanting to invest massive amounts of resources for that position but they've gone completely the other way, trying to address it as cheaply as possible with journeymen free agents and late round draft picks.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but to me it seems like an early signal that they would not sign him to the long-term contract he will most likely be seeking next off-season. Not with Prescott and Cooper needing new deals at the same time.

Isn’t one of them a hybrid back-wr and return man? Pollard is a Swiss Army knife
If he is, then I feel better about that pick, since that would spell the end of the likes of Tavon Austin and Ryan Switzer.

Also, and in my defense, I did mention to my brother that he'd better be a special teams stud if he had any hopes of making the roster. If he is a good return man, then that would be a huge point in his favor. The team has been sorely lacking in that area since the departure of Duane Harris.

Zeke is a non-report for camp after another offseason where he could have easily gotten suspended. I think my understanding/patience with him is over.

There was an incident where he knocked down a security guard at an event in Las Vegas this summer and had to have another meeting with Goodell.

Does anyone here think he's even worth $30mm/year?
I think there is an argument to be made that he is depending on how you project him. He’s entering his prime and has been to the Pro Bowl twice in 3 years while being very durable. He’s not a good enough pure passer for my liking but I think you can win a SB with him.

The problem for the Cowboys, which every team faces, is the decision between overpaying the guy they have or entering the QB purgatory that is very difficult to get out of. Jerry is in a tough spot here and I bet he caves. It’s much easier to play hard ball with a RB than your franchise QB.

Yep.

It’s easy when you’re paying the truly exceptional QB, and not so much when you hit the middle market of NFL starters. Finding Dak isn’t easy even if he shouldn’t be paid like Russell Wilson.

"Worth" is all relative anyway. He's probably adding about that much in value so if it were a truly free market without a salary cap he's "worth" that much. Even within the strictures of the cap, would you rather overpay to get about $25m of performance from him, or take a shot at getting the Case Keenums of the world at $7.5m?

Talk about dramatically overestimating one’s bargaining position... the Cowboys have Dak at $2 million for this year, and can then franchise him at ~$27 million and ~$32 million, so 3 years and ~$61 million all in. Assuming 3 real years on the deal, $30 million per/$90 million total seems pretty generous of Dallas.

For a good, but not great QB, that hasn’t demonstrated the ability to carry a team, that feels like a lot. $40 million is just lunacy. I mean, I’m not sure you could build a Super Bowl contender around Rodgers or Brady or Mahomes at a $40 million number...

Now 3 x $20mm seems perfectly reasonable to me. Not sure why Dallas just doesn't go that route, unless there is a threat of him possibly holding out.

Honestly I think I would take my chances rather than pay an average QB $30mm/year.

He also runs the ball a decent amount. 75 carries last year so the risk of injury is real. I would bet he comes to his senses soon. Would be a little surprised if this drags out.

Just popping in to mention you guys have a Boise State OC and 6 former (Boise) Broncos on your roster (Wilson, Crawford, D-Law, LVE, Iloka & Thompson). That is nuts, but I guess, go Cowboys?!

Especially when that RB is a constant headache. I'm kind of done with Elliott and hope they let him walk, using the savings of his ridiculous contract demands to pay Prescott and Cooper. They could get much more bang for their buck that way than trying to thread the needle with all three.

That may come as a surprise to anyone who's read my well-documented criticism of Prescott but I've just lost all faith in Elliott. They're better off going all-in with the former than the latter.

I think this is a reasonable position. Zeke is a good player, obviously, but the OL is strong and you simply can’t afford to pay him along with Dak and Cooper. The offense looked much better with Amari in there so he would definitely be a bigger priority for me. There are a lot of good RBs out there now so not even sure what Zeke trade market would be.

If the Bell holdout from last year is any indication, I'd guess there isn't any trade market for a RB with his contract demands and the Goodell guillotine hanging over his head.

Agreed with you and Bosoxen on this. I think you have to pay Dak either way unless maybe he's a total shitshow in 2019....though I don't expect him to be. So that basically leaves room for Cooper or Zeke and I'm signing Cooper without hesitation. He was basically a top 3 WR in the NFL after the trade to Dallas last year. He probably won them the division.

Zeke is crazy talented, but in today's NFL he just doesn't bring enough value to justify paying him over Cooper. Plus at some point, you can't keep worrying about off field bullshit that seems to be a constant issue with Zeke.

Was just coming here to post about that. That smacks to me as a subtle FU to Elliott. And I'm ok with that.

Jaylen embodies everything that Elliot should strive to be....dude worked his ass off to come back and not only be relevant, but be one of the better LBs in the league and of course, is very low key with no hints of issues off the field. Elliot has amazing god-given talent, but doesn't seem too interested in trying to maximize it deep into his 20s.

So basically Charles Robinson is simply repeating what the Cowboys tell him, without atrributing it to the Cowboys, but instead to "reporting." Thanks for the tips, Jerry.

L'ael Collins got a 5-year contract extension this morning and supposedly Zeke is flying back and they're hoping to get a deal done today or tomorrow per Schefter.

The amount of leaking---from whichever side and likely both/all---is in such contrast to the way other teams do buiness. When was the last time you saw this kind of reporting on, say, a Ravens or Patriots FA?

The most publicity I can recall around a Patriots FA signing was when Brady refused to practice or something over one of his Receivers.

Do we assume it’s the team most responsible for the leaks? It feels like a lot of teams, the leaks from a player would be enough to cut them. Zeke is pretty good though...

You're making this up, right? Is there a joke I'm missing?

The team is responsible insofar as the team is the only constant. There have been Patriots players who have publicly grumbled about their contracts - Vince Wilfork reportedly demanded his release and ripped his nameplate off his locker. Logan Mankins accused the Patriots (specifically, Robert Kraft) of negotiating in bad faith. In both cases, the team didn't give the story any air, and in both cases they were able to move past it and work out a deal eventually.

As far as players, Brady does a good job keeping his negotiations under wraps. But not all players will. But because the team stays quiet from their end, these stories don't get the kind of legs this Zeke deal has.

Something I think about sometimes that fits with this idea: I have no idea what Belichick's contract looks like. How many years, what the terms of his pay is, when they last time he re-upped, anything.

Jerry loves making a show of it...esp if he feels like he's getting pushed around a bit.

On the flip side though, the Collins and Jaylen Smith deals got done totally under the radar...nobody reported about anything on either deal until it was done.
