Scouting Report: Tall lefty with a projectable frame. Fastball sits in the low-90s. Also mixes in a solid circle changeup. Downhill movement in delivery. Participated in spring training in 2012, but returned to Australia to finish high school.

In 37.0 innings so far between GCL and the Spinners, the lefty who celebrated his 19th birthday this summer has 49 strikeouts compared to only 7 walks.  In just 17 innings for Lowell he's sporting an absurd 19.00 K/BB ratio, born less than two weeks apart from fellow lefty and this year's big bonus seventh overall draft pick Trey Ball (who's pitched 4 innings thus far in Rookie League).
 
Last night he went 5 perfect innings for the Spinners striking out 6, including Yankees first round draft pick and recent Notre Dame grad Eric Jagielo.

McGrath has begun his first full season in pro-ball with Greenville, after a miserable first start last week (4 ER in just 2 IP) he rebounded last night (5/20) with a very impressive outing.
 
McGrath's start, 5/20 @ Asheville: 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 HR.  57 pitches/40 strikes. (Greenville wins 11-1, McGrath gets the win.)
 
Last year, at Lowell, McGrath's fastball sat in the high-80s.  The hope was that he had a "projectable frame" and that his velocity might improve as he matured, and since he won't turn 21 until this summer, there is still time.  No mention of his 2014 fastball from Speier.
 
There's disappointment over the slow progress of Trey Ball, the 8th overall pick in the 2012 draft, but there is an abundance of other high-ceiling pitching talent at both Greenville and Salem. As  I mentioned in the Simon Mercedes thread that once the "log-jam" of the mid-20s Pawsox rotation is broken, over the next 1 1/2 years, we'll see a lot of these younger arms rise to the top of the system.

Since 5/20 McGrath's had 3 GS: 14.2 IP, 8 ER, 10 BB, 10 K, 0 HR.
 
Not a very pretty line, but 6 of the 8 ER came in one start.  Looks like he's having some growing pains in his first year of full-season ball but that is to be expected, he's still so young.

McGrath went 6 innings tonight giving up a run on seven hits and a walk to go along with 6 Ks.  Nice to see him limiting the walks, he has a 4.8 BB/9 on the year.

Daniel McGrath has been pitching great for Portland this year, only allowing 4 ER in 14 starts since May 13th. He's 25 and his one appearance in Pawtucket did not go well, but I think the recent streak gets him a little credit. At least enough to bump a five yr old thread.

There's a minor league catch all thread on the main board. He got some love there. I'll give him some more here. In the 3rd inning last night, he gave up a HR. That ended his 48.1 IP scoreless streak he had going in AA.
