I'm seeing some Mets fans hoping they didn't trade either of the prospects who ended up going out. welp.

From Topkin:
MORE #RAYS NEWS: They've traded Christian Arroyo along with Hunter Wood to #Indians for minor-league OF Ruben Cardenas and international signing money.
Cardenas, 21, is batting .284/.343/.475 w/ 10 HR, 54 RBI in 84 games at Class A Lake County

Vargas to the Phillies. More to come.

I guess the Mets don't mind dealing to their rivals...
Well, when they get such mindblowingly hot prospects as a 25 year old catcher hitting .195/.303/.335 in his second season at Double-A. Definitely worth giving up Vargas AND cash.

Oh, Mets.

Per Peter Gammons on the athletic, he believes the Yankees don't need to give up Deivi for Robbie. To me, that means Cashman is holding out just a little longer in case he can get a bigger fish with the other prospects.

• Yankees. It appears Arizona can do a Robby Ray trade without Deivi Garcia or Gleyber Torres, as the Jays have indicated in a Marcus Stroman deal. Ray may be a 16- to 18-out guy, but the Yankees have the bullpen, and strikeouts are a way to avoid band-box homers. Perhaps their people feel Minor or Boyd is superior to Paxton, perhaps not. And trying to get Trevor Bauer is a great idea, but, remember, Cleveland’s magic number is 1948 and they have the pitching to win in 2019 or 2020. As for Syndergaard, it’s clear the Mets keep trying to move on up from Queens, but the GPS keeps steering them back to the 1964 World’s Fair. You never know; they had people on the decision floor who wanted to trade Pete Alonso last winter.

Somewhat strange quote by the Phillies GM. Seems a bit back-handed to me. . . . .

"Jason Vargas is battle-tested and has been relatively effective for the better part of a decade now,'' Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said. "He gives his team a chance to win the game every time he takes the ball. I like the fact it's a different look. He's a soft-tossing lefty. We have a lot of hard-throwing righties. He's a good complement to our pitching staff.''

Ken Giles has been unavailable for two straight games, still dealing with elbow inflammation that sent him to the IL earlier this season. Hard to see anyone wanting to bite on him at this point.

I was going to say I don't see the appeal of Bradley for NY but if he is coming as a secondary piece along with Ray, I get it as he's been pretty dominant the past month, no runs allowed and 19 of 43 batters faced out struck out.

If they're dealing away Wheeler, do they then keep Thor?
The Mets are less logical than any other franchise and even more so in the Brodie era, but I'd think one wouldn't really affect the other. Wheeler is a FA this winter, they should move him no matter what. I also don't think they're getting the offers they hope/expect on Thor.

They should. Getting Stroman means Wheeler is even more expendable than he already was to begin with. A rotation of deGrom-Stroman-Syndergaard-Matz-5th guy is very good. They really shouldn't deal Diaz either if they are truly serious about trying to contend next year.
Unless they have someone who is going to be less expensive/under longer control coming in or coming up as part of the move. Then again...

...there is this fact. If an MLB team could embody schizophrenia, it would be the Mets.

The Diaz trade rumors really never made sense to me. As you point out, Stroman trade is to contend next year, so why are they trading their best relief asset who is under control when his value is at a low? My guess is that the Mets move Wheeler. They move Syndergaard if they get MLB players who can help next year.

I think the Diaz rumors are basically coming from a 'maybe he's not cut out for closing in NY' mindset. Which, to be fair, NY has had a history of closers that stuff-wise are good, but then tend to implode in playoff/serious pressure situations (Familia being the latest in a long line).

Otherwise, I do agree - obviously I'm a little biased, but I do think that the Mets are basically a competent bullpen away from being at least a serious wild-card contending team (which, coupled with top-tier starters, makes a dangerous playoff team), and they certainly have enough payroll flexibility to build a bullpen in the offseason. Now, you could have said that about 2019 as well, and they obviously didn't... but I don't think there's an obvious need for a complete teardown.

How does Familia fit that characterization? He gave up 1 run in 14 2/3 innings in their 2015 WS season. That doesn't seem like imploding in playoff pressure to me.

The Mets have bigger issues than their 25 man. They don't set their players up for success, too much turmoil day-to-day, and management issues from top to bottom. I will take them seriously when they earn it. 6 months ago they acquired Keon Broxton and DFAd him 3 months later. Acquired Cano and he's been a disaster. Acquired Diaz and are trading him already.

They don't just make unusual moves, they don't follow through with their plan. Trading for Stroman and sending Diaz away is insane to me.

Their team defense is horrendous, they ignored it before Brodie and they are still ignoring it (based on personnel). This is by far the biggest reason they 'underachieve' and why their pitchers are a good bet to improve if traded. Stroman is going to learn this pretty quickly.

I'll say this again since no report includes it for some reason. Bumgarner has a limited no trade and Houston and New York are on his list.

Doesn't really matter. All it is is something he can leverage into a contract extension or something else he wants.
Well, he could just say no, but he will hurt his offseason earning ability then unless he works out a long-term deal with SF as he'll have to turn down a qualifying offer and then there will be a pick attached.

Taylor Trammell is involved, I am scared of what possible long-term pieces CLE got from SD.
