Martin Maldonado from KC to the Cubs in exchange for Mike Montgomery, WIllson Contreras to the IL with a minor injury.

Royals & Cubs swapped Maldonaldo & Montgomery, respectively. Contreras to the IL necessitated the move for the Cubbies, apparently.

Montgomery is 30 and not that good lately but he has 2 years of control still. giving him up for a backup catcher rental seems like an overpay.

Just four days to go and absolutely nothing actually happening. There are a whole bunch of factors here:

1) So many teams with a realistic shot at the wild cards, especially in the NL. I'd say right now six teams in each league are definitely out of it, and not all of them are so gung-ho on selling.

2) We saw GMs are less willing to pay big free agent prices this past winter, and the same thing is I think the case right now, but the prices are in prospects instead of cash. Teams are more hesitant than ever to deal controllable talent for higher-priced, shorter control, non-optionable players.

3) There are more hopeful acquirers than there are talented available players, so the sellers are holding out for big prices.

4) The new single deadline of July 31, GMs aren't used to having to make final decisions so early in the season.

5) In the age of Twitter, no GMs want to be mocked for selling too low or giving up too much, and no GMs are currently in danger of losing their jobs (I've seen a few writers say this latter point).

It's going to be interesting to see how and when and who breaks this logjam, it can be a big mistake not to sell when you should, like the Tigers with Michael Fulmer when he was at peak value. Guys like Stroman and Giles and Shane Greene should get dealt as they'll be less valuable this offseason and all are only under contract through 2020, but we'll see who actually gets moved and if any acquiring GMs cave and pay big prices. The Mets are especially interesting, Wheeler is a FA and absolutely should go or be extended, and now they are talking a lot about moving Syndergaard and Edwin Diaz. Good luck explaining to the Mets fan base why you traded Diaz for so much less than you gave up for him just this past winter, but Mets gonna Mets.

Monday is an off day for a bunch of teams, I think we could see some big moves then if not before.

Or it just needed my post to get moving, Diekman to the A’s for two prospects.

So the two guys that KC got for Diekman aren't top 30 prospects, one is a 26 year old in AA. The few deals that have gotten done in recent weeks have all been like this, the selling team realizes there's not a huge market there and just pulls the trigger anyway.

With the elimination of the waiver trade deadline, I'm wondering if in the near future we'll see the July 31st deadline pushed back a week or two. That extra time might allow a few teams to more accurately assess whether the are actually buyers or sellers and it might also make a few more players available and from a fan's POV make the deadline a bit more exciting. The last part isn't the most important, but anything MLB can do to to keep fan interest....

"The expectation among executives with buying and selling teams is that the lion’s share of action won’t start until July 30 — and maybe even deadline day the 31st. Teams are girding themselves for waves of moves those days as they move off their rather entrenched positions."-Jeff Passan

In more Metsian news.....They are potentially interested in trading Syndergaard and using some of the prospects to acquire Stroman.

They are, excuse my french, the dumbest fucking team ever.

Their signatures aren't on the current contracts of either Chris Davis or Eric Hosmer, so I'm not sure how that can be true. But they certainly have a fighting chance at the podium.

Davis and Hosmer can at least suit up, the Mets have Cespedes and Lowrie making around $37M this year. It's possible that Brodie has had the worst nine months of any GM ever, although Preller's first year was pretty disastrous too and he turned it around soon after.

The Twins trade for Sergio Romo, whoo hoo.

Hahaha, the Mets just traded for Marcus Stroman, which presumably means they will move Syndergaard to the Padres.

Stroman deal doesn't involve Syndergaard and SD/NYM aren't close on a Thor deal either. Can't wait to see how the Mets have botched this one.

They must be close on Syndergaard and Wheeler. They're gonna say this is a move to be competitive next year but then why not wait until the offseason? Absolutely moronic to pay the price at a deadline for a top pitcher when youre out of contention.

Let's put it this way, if the Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, and Houston thought the price for Stroman wasn't right, what makes the Mets think they know better? Just insane to me.

Or Wheeler and maybe Vargas, then they have deGrom, Syndergaard, Stroman and Matz next year.

Pretty curious how much the Mets gave up to get TOR to pull the trigger a few days before the deadline.

No Mets players rumored yet, I am going to guess Dominic Smith and Anthony Kay, maybe one of their young SS prospects too.

Stroman was the one realistic guy I feared going to the Yankees. The guy killed Boston and loved rubbing it in.
Thank you Mets.

Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson.
I'm still betting Dominic Smith too, let's see.

The Yankees wouldn't include Deivi Garcia or Clint Frazier for Stroman, FWIW. I would have included Clint personally, but I am glad to not face him 19 times a season also.

I wonder if Brodie is trying to be the NL's Jerry Dipoto, looking to always have pitching to trade or keep depending on how his team plays. It doesn't really do anything for the Mets chances this season, but he can flip Vargas and Wheeler for prospects now and then can flip Stroman in the winter if he is wowed or next year's deadline if the Mets are bad, but if the Mets are good next season they still have a stacked rotation with DeGrom, possibly Syndergaard and now Stroman.

If that's his play I think it's pretty smart, as long as the Mets have DeGrom and Syndergaard they have a window where they ought to try to be competitive.

If the deal is just Kay and Richardson, I like that from a talent perspective for the Mets. They definitely need to move Wheeler at least now, though.

So that's the entire trade, Kay and Woods-Richardson for Stroman. Kay seems good but he is already 24, surprised the Blue Jays couldn't get more for Stroman.

If they're not going to include either of those two in potential trades then perhaps expectations should be lowered this deadline. Stroman seemed like a good fit for a number of reasons including he wanted to play for the Yankees, 67%+ ground ball pitcher, is a L.I guy and pitches in the division. Seemed like a sure thing considering some SP don't pan out in the Bronx.

Why the hell.wouldnt Cashman include Frazier in a Stroman deal. Is he obsessed with soundly beating every GM in a deal?

They wouldn't include either for Stroman, that doesn't mean they wouldn't include them for other players. Not sure how much it matters now, but Stroman was absolutely awful last season (5.54 ERA).

I picture locking Cashman and Danny Ainge in a room, as the air is slowing drained from it, and telling them the only way to save their lives is to make a deal that's fair to both sides
