not the best PUP list to start.

really interested how the punting battle goes. Allen I think is a bit below average but had the game of his life in SB53. I'd say thank you and move on.

Most of the PUP guys get off in the first 2 weeks of training camp once they pass the conditioning test. Cajuste was said to be dealing with a torn quad when he was drafted and was expected to be sidelined 3-4 months from that point. Sony Michel missed minicamp practices as well; IIRC he had some sort of procedure on his knee during the offseason, but this one probably bears the most watching.

Correct on both Sony and Cajuste. Cajuste reportedly had surgery as well.

Really interested in the 2019 camp. Between Harry, JoeJuan, Winovich, Harris, and Wynn, you have a lot of potential impact guys who we haven't seen. And then you have the barely-seen guys like Duke Dawson, Bentley, etc. And I'm sure there will be a surprise or two, as always.

In the "barely seen" category, Braxton Berrios will be interesting as well.

I couldn't agree more -- this has me pretty fired up for camp/preseason (more than usual). It just feels like this is a transition period for this team, but that it could go very well and be the start of another pseudo-run with so much potential from young guys. Color me excited.

I keep wondering if Super Bowl LII was the start of the transition (back?) to the Pats being a team that wins mainly with defense and the running game. It's 2003/2004 all over again!

There are a lot of if's on defense, but they are of the "if <this> happens, we could be looking at a legendary defense" as opposed to ""if <this> happens, the defense might not SUCK."
  • If Bennett has anything left in the tank, . . .
  • If Winovich can be a sack machine, . . .
  • If the safeties can hold off Father Time, . . .
  • If JC can prove that his rookie season was just the start of something great, . . .
  • If JoeJuan can be the sort of tall cover weapon that BB has only ever had once before, . . .
Meanwhile on the other side of the forest, . . .
  • Who knows what sort of production TE can bring as a unit, . . .
  • Can someone, anyone, step up besides JE11, . . .
  • Is this the year that TB12 starts to act his age?
OTOH, on offense,
  • The O-Line could be a monster again.
  • The RB corps is deep and multi-talented.
  • Brady is Brady.

Since at least 2014 I feel like I go through the same progression every year:

Going into training camp: Hmm, there are some holes here and there but this team has the chance to be REALLY good.
Preseason: Damn, they had some unfortunate injuries and BB made some weird cuts/roster decisions. Hope those don't come back to bite them.
Weeks 1-5/8ish: Shit, they look average at best. Their holes are really being exposed, and the injuries to [insert player(s)] aren't helping either.
Weeks 5/8ish to playoffs: Wow, they are really starting to round into form. They got a few players back from injury and [insert random UDFA] came out of nowhere to help them.
Playoffs: Can't believe I ever doubted them. This team has the stuff to win it all if they catch a few lucky breaks.

Lather, rinse, repeat. (That's all a long way of saying - I'm squarely in the "looking at the rosters as they stand now, this team has the chance to (once again) be really good" if they can stay relatively healthy and come up with some new schemes on offense to mesh with their differently-situated offensive personnel.)

They really could use a veteran tackle, which they had for a few days before Veldheer retired. Cannon is always dinged and Wynn is an unknown. Trent Brown was a mauler in the run game for them, so it'll be interesting to see how that shakes out.

I am irrationally excited to see Damien Harris play. Given Michel's health, won't shock me to see Harris become the #1 guy when the season starts.

Not specifically related but I might be more excited than ever for football season in general and obviously watching this team take the field. We're done worrying about playing for the legacy stuff, the team looks stacked, and on a personal level the closing date for the house we are trying to buy is mid-September and I'm bursting at the seams thinking about finally just being done with it all and sitting down every Sunday to watch football in my own family room after months of constant stress. I'm jacked up.

You really think your wife will just let you watch football with all those unfinished house projects piling up? Oh Jed...

I always figured an Akido expert would be awesome for teaching DLs to hand fight.
Imagine trying to block Seagal!

There's the 'surprise camp retirement' of the summer....

Hopefully the only one.

This is very good. We should enjoy it because this run for the past 18 years has been fantabulous.

The evolution from season to season has been fascinating. Should we expect the Pats to follow up last years Super Bowl winning approach and be a heavy running offense with a suffocating defense? Or will they feature a vertical passing game despite few proven receiving assets with a bend but don’t break defense? Or something altogether different and morph from week to week depending on their opponent. I truly have no idea however it seems that they are sure to be highly competitive and thoroughly entertaining. I feel lucky to be a lifelong Pats fan and even though I loved the teams of the 70s, 80s and 90s there were no happy endings in those days.

Some notes from various beat writers at practice.
--No Michael Bennett or David Andrews out there.
--Etling is working at WR.
--Isaiah Wynn not yet getting in for team reps. Thuney played most of practice at LT.
--N'Keal Harry a big factor in red zone passing drills. Made some really good plays.
--Jerod Mayo calling the defensive plays.
--Brady had side sessions with Harry and Ben Watson.
--UDFA WR Jakobi Myers flashed today with a nice catch when playing with Brady.
--Chung coming off his surgery was in a red non-contact jersey. But him being out there already is good.
--Jon Jones intercepted Brady's first pass of the practice.
--Henry McKenna says Watson looked very good.
--The first unit LBs were KVN, Hightower, and Collins.

Bedard also noted that it is striking how much fitter Hightower looks, with it being notable on-field in how much better he looks covering TEs.

I managed to entirely forgot that Jamie Collins was back. I theoretically love that trio.

I'm rooting for Etling, I really like the kid, but he's not fast enough to be a straight up WR. I hope they are trying to figure out if he has a role as an X type player because i could see him being very good as a dual threat type.

Yeah, maybe they can use him to run "The Philly Special" on the Iggles in the Super Bowl rematch.
