2019 Open Championship- Royal Portrush

Duval was never going to win this week, but he's a past winner of The Open Championship - I'm perfectly happy for one of his rewards being continual entry into The Open until he's 60, even if that means a marginal qualifier with a tiny (rather than non-existent) chance of winning is deprived of a place.

Then let him be an honorary entrant and let some marginal qualifier have the time of his life.

71 at +1 or better. It is likely going to move to +2 which helps Rory. Should get a birdie at 12, maybe an eagle.

Where do you draw the "honorary entrant" line between no-hoper David Duval and nearly-won-the-Open-at-59 Tom Watson?
I would do it based on recent results. I'll let someone else define Recent Results, as to if it should be Opens or all competitive rounds. He doesn't play much but since the 2015 Open, when he made the cut, all he has is missed cuts and withdrawns

Need 3 guys to leak oil coming in.

Down to 2 with a Kim bogey at 17. Benjamin Hebert is at +1 through 15, he could make a bogey coming in. Finding the 3rd guy is going to be the problem. Nobody at E out there. Callum Shinkwin is at -1 through 15, so he’d need to really have a disaster finish.

JB/Lowry
Fleetwood/Westwood
Smith/Harding
Rose/Koepka
Spieth/Putnam

Think that will be the last 5 pairs tomorrow. Lots of guys lurking, Finau, Rahm, Reed, Kuchar at -4, DJ at -3. This feels like a wide open tournament, even someone in the -1 group could go low tomorrow and get in the mix for Sunday.

Re - Duval - Sad to see, really. He was world no 1 and then he fell off a cliff.

Duval is excellent on the golf channel now. I hope he sticks around for the weekend coverage. He also was good after yesterday’s 91 saying that it’s his job as a pro to post the score no matter what.

He looked pretty hurt the few times they showed him today. He was wearing some kind of band on his left elbow, and was awkwardly getting the ball out of the hole. He was holding the putter under his armpit instead of leaning on it to bend down like most guys do.

I’m cool with pretty much anyone up there, but would have Lowry, Koepka, Spieth and Fleetwood as my top choices to root for. Probably have Koepka as the top choice, he fascinated me and the history angle is compelling.

I should root for JB but can’t do it and expect him to shoot a 90 today.

Actually what I’m most rooting for is wind. Bring me the wind. Let’s see gale force winds.
That’s on tap for tomorrow, along with a lashing rain.

And yes, I like Holmes, but nothing about him has me believing he’s up to holding on to the lead in conditions like that.

They aren’t showing too much of him, but JT could be a guy that makes a move. He is -2 through 6, -3 for the tournament. Got off to a slow start the first two rounds, playing the front in +3, but has played then back well at -4.

Spieth feels like Rose at Pebble. Scrambling will only get you so far, eventually the leaky tee shots will catch up to you.

Westy’s a great story and I’m pulling for him too, but I can’t help but cringe at the thought that he will miss a bunny at some critical juncture.
