I lost track--did the Celtics re-sign Theis, or is Poirier likely replacing him?

The Celtics own Early Bird Rights on Theis and gave him a qualifying offer which is worth $1.8 million. Poirier is being signed using the Minimum Exception. I believe both can be on the team.
Sure, they *can* be...I think folks want to do know *if* they'll be.

Last I heard on Theis, and I don't remember where, is that he wanted to go back to Europe. That may have been based on the rough locker room last year, so hopefully that's resolved and he would like to stay.

Poirier is the French TimeLord, except that Poirier is a grown man. Poirier and Theis are different players. I could see Theis spending time at the 4. Poirier will never be a 4.

Theis is essentially a four but those designations mean little these days.

Cool. He’s big and looks mean. The arm tattoos remind me of Steven Adams, who’s also big and looks mean and plays great defense.

If Theis wants to, I'd imagine he might be back just as salary filler, exact reason they kept Yabu around. If he wants playing time, he'll need to go back to Europe though.

Ainge's approach seems to be - hey everyone, we have an open starting job for center here on one of the premiere franchises in the NBA. Open competition, but entry limited to a few people who are willing to take less (plus a 2-year Euro vet and a sophomore draftee). If you've always thought you could be a quality starter, come make your case to get into the competition, and possibly make it big - because you'll get a chance to prove it.

I don't mind taking flyers on a bunch of these guys at all, not when the scouting says they could get at least to Baynes level production.

I think they will keep Theis if they can and do everything possible to trade Yabu. I think Theis will get plenty of playing time if he decides to stay.

Na, Yabu is staying to keep his salary slot imo.

Pourier is a rugged rebounder, particularly on the offensive glass. I think he's an effective Baynes replacement with better leaping ability. Really solid depth signing.

Here are some clip reels, he is an explosive leaper and can execute a PnR:
https://youtu.be/rQbWqbw3bzohttps://youtu.be/F-pmuCX5vhchttps://youtu.be/2lYP1ccwEzQ
Little thing from those highlights. He often blocks shots with his left hand. That's a great skill for a righty to have, as you can block more shots as a left-handed shot-blocker...just have a little more reach as most offensive players move to their right (your left).

Now I'm pretty pumped about a Pourier/Kanter/Time Lord three-headed monster in the middle.

Pourier looks more athletic than Baynes, bigger than Theis. A Pourier/Kanter/Time Lord seems like a competent, complementary trio. Enough varying skills to give CBS good match-up options.

The last video posted above, of his 2018-2019 highlights, is amazing. He seems to have really good hands and footwork around the basket and obviously has hops and looked like a very natural PnR big man. I also liked that that he was doing it against pretty big clubs; Real Madrid, Barcelona, CSKA Moscow, Panathiakos, those teams are significantly better than NCAA teams. I know they are just highlights, but damn.

Poirier didn't want to come over in the Spring because he didn't think he would start and did not intend to come to the US to sit on the bench. My guess is that he's been, maybe not promised, but led to believe there are plenty of minutes for him.

Why not? Theis can play the 4 or 5 and it looks like Poirier is athletic enough to do so as well. Versatile.
Can Theis really play the 4?

He and Baynes were on the floor for less than three minutes total last year.

I think the Celtics view him as just an undersized 5.

Think they'd really struggle to score with Theis at the 4 alongside an even slower 5.

Pro: EuroLeague rebounding leader last year.

Con: He's 25. Not a lot of physical upside at this point, though of course skills may improve now that he's facing better competition.

Looks like we might have a new leader in the clubhouse over Hayward for "player whose last name SoSH members will misspell most often." :)
Was the thread title changed. Because I swear I just be copied that. At least I copied something around here. Maybe one of those other posts.

I’m pumped. I mentioned in some thread that I would have liked for Danny to take a flyer on Poirier. There will be some adjustment to the NBA for sure but you can’t teach size and physicality which he has plenty of.

He's left-handed. His jump shot looks to be two-handed but he dunks and blocks lefty

I know he dunks lefty and blocks shots lefty (not always..he had some right handed blocks in there). But his jump shot looks right-handed. Ambidextrous guy? Either way...blocking shots lefty (either because you're lefty or because that's how you do it) is advantageous, so it's good.

Funny, in that first highlight video he took a total of two jump shots in the entire video (oddly, he seems to shoot those with his right hand dominant, but all the dunks are with the left).

Looks like strictly a rim-runner/shot-blocker type, so there will be some overlap of his skills with Time Lord's.

EDIT: Clearly we were thinking the same thing. :)

I think this is right. Theis is a smallball 5 who can be used to run a 5-out offense. None of his 10 most common 5-man units from last year have Horford, Baynes, or Williams. He did play more with Horford in his rookie year.

where the darn libs live
FWIW on the Boston Celtics subreddit:

"Hello from a EuroLeague fan. I'm watch him since his Paris-Levallois days. He spent his last two year at Baskonia and he became best solid center in EuroLeague. He is very good p&r man. Great pick, good-timing-roll and power finishing.

He is good defender. Solid and exertional. 6'11'' height is enough for challange his opponents.

But he can't shoot threes and very rare mid-range shoot.

I can get every question about him!"

This guy could be Janos's editor.

Great thread there, the comments go on for ages with the Q&A for this guy.

Q: How's his team defense and rim protection? Who would you say is his nba comp?
A: He is good rim-protector but not blocker. Everytime he plays hard. Not bad at passing. Let me tell you this: Lé Zaza Pachulia with good ethics.

ha. Janos's cousin from the Ukraine

Have we decided on Vincent Poirier's nom de plume?
1. VP
2. VinPo
3. Vinnie Pure
4. V-Man
The more pressing issue is a nickname for Grant Williams, since we already have a Williams on the roster in Time Lord and it could get confusing.

That's easy. Since he played college ball for the Vols, he's got to be Tennessee Williams.

Is he a decent rebounder? There’s gotta be a glass menagerie pun.

I’m just glad we got an exertional player finally.

Yea, the craftsmanship behind the use of "exertional" must not be forgotten. His highoight clips are honestly not encouraging - usually when a highlights package is nothing but alley oop dunks for a big guy its because he doesnt do anything else. Lets hope he's a good defender.

Come now. There were multiple blocks and one 15 foot shot in those clips.
