Learned only today that former Sox catcher Walt McKeel passed away this past January at age 46.

I remember his second ML game, against the White Sox, when he was brought in to catch Heathcliff Slocumb after the Red Sox tied the game in the top of the ninth, only to have Slocumb hit a batter and throw two wild pitches, the second of which brought home the winning run.

Last player to wear #45 before Pedro.

Kinsler has to be one of the my least-liked Red Sox players ever.

He says kids should watch American players to see how to play the game right, and then he does something like that. If a black or (especially) Latino player did that, they would be crucified.

Plus he cost them Ty Buttrey, who would look really nice on this team now.

Giving up a major league capable pitcher for Kinsler was an absolutely pantsing of DD. How was Kinsler worth anything more than a Single A lottery ticket?

31 K, 4BB, 2ER in 23.2 innings for Buttrey.

I didn't have a problem with targeting Kinsler, but forking over a guy who had clearly revived his prospect status after moving to the bullpen seems like an overpay for a 36 year old vet. Either way a championship was won, so it's not really worth belaboring. Nice get by the Angels. Tip of the cap.

They very likely don't win the WS without Kinsler, because they didn't have a capable 2B. He was by no means great, but he still solidified a massive gaping hole in that roster.

You don't sweat losing a reliever (even a good one) when the move was entirely justified and led to winning the whole thing.

Who did you want the Sox to get to play 2B then?

Chandler Shepherd picked up by Cubs and put into AA
I’m okay with the Kinsler deal even with the benefit of hindsight. Numbers were ugly but he had a couple of big hits in October and his error in Game 3 ended up not mattering. Best way of putting it is I would buy him a drink if I ran into him at a bar.

I didn't like the Kinsler trade at the time but they weren't going to hand the job over to an unproven Lin and they didn't really have any other choices. I think Williams Jerez has a decent chance to become a quality reliever too.

Jalen Beeks is having a pretty good year too, but that trade worked out pretty well for us. 11 g, 2.25 era, 32.0 ip, 1 HRA, 10bb/33k.

I'd buy him a drink on the condition that I, not the bartender, could give it to him... then I'd toss it 10 feet to his right.

Old friend Blake Swihart has has two outstanding OF assists over the last two days for the Dbacks. Today's resulted in Yaz's grandkid being thrown out after rounding first on his first big-league hit. Yesterday's pegged Pillar trying to stretch a double into a triple.

Joe Kelly has given up 4HR this season, which equals his HR given up total from ALL of last year.

And he was once again booed off the mound today.

Dodger fans are ready to run him out of town

His ERA is also 8+

His up to date ERA is 8.83 and he is responsible for a runner here still, he is unusable currently. Roberts brought him into a 8-3 game in the 8th, single, HR, single to the three batters he faced and the Mets are back in the ballgame (a fun game, Kershaw/DeGrom but both were only OK, three lead changes already and now the Mets coming back again).

Jose Iglesias is having a pretty good offensive year so far: 189 PA, .306/.339/.444. He already has 4 HRs, his career high is 6.

I was slightly disappointed when the Sox traded Margot as I thought he was going to be a very good player but he just hasn't hit at the MLB level. He's at .233/.261/.318 this year in 135 PA and .251/.296/.388 for his career in 1220 PA.

This is a really good article- old prospects Kalish and Anderson featured.
As a point of debate... respectively Kalish was always linked with Josh Reddick and Anderson linked with Rizzo. I can definitely go back to some old boards and some on here where I was adamant that Reddick and Anderson were the future and that Kalish and Anderson were not... but Theo really loved Anderson and Kalish... and to me it was definitely one of his failings.

Josh Reddick never would have played here, nor would we have wanted him to.
Huh? Why? He would have been nice to have in RF and in the lower half of a lineup.
I still think if Theo didn’t have his crushes on Crawford and Gonzalez, we could have had Rizzo, Reddick, Beltre at the heart of the order for a while.*
*you could also argue that ‘13 would not have happened if Theo made the right deals back then and that was one of my favorite teams

Hey hey hey, it's Matt Albers, pitching for the Brewers against the Pirates on FS1 and rocking Milwaukee's throwback uniforms. The pinstripes are not helping much, but there's only so much they can do.
Albers just put up a scoreless inning, so the score remains 10-10 after 10.

Padres to promote pitcher Logan Allen (of the Kimbrel trade) for a start tomorrow.
Updates on the other prospects in that trade:

Manuel Margot, the centerpiece of that trade, has seen his OPS drop steadily over the past 3 seasons from 0.721 to 0.591. Carlos Asuaje is in Korea after a 0.641 career OPS over parts of 3 MLB seasons. Javy Guerra has been on the DL while playing in high-A ball at age 23.

I guess Dombrowski wasn't so "Dumb" after all when it came to judging those prospects. Although Logan Allen is still young and throws hard, so he may still turn into a back half of a rotation starter or reliever.

Jose Iglesias is now with the Cincinnati Reds. His slash line reads as follows:

.302/.341/.431 for an OPS of .772, which is pretty good. He also has 5 HR in 67 games this season.

Buttrey's struggled a bit of late. Last 14 games: 6.00 era, 12.0 ip, 15 hits, 7bb/11k with 3 HRA.

His teammate and former Sox hand Noe Ramirez is having a good year to date too: 3.08 era in 38.0 IP with 12bb/45k. K rate of 29.0% and BB rate of 7.7%. Still giving up too many HR with 7 but he's having a much better career than I anticipated him having. Last 9 games: 14.2 ip, 8 hits, 0 er, 1bb/18k.

In 2 games this year (4/21, 5/23) he combined to go 3.1 IP, 7 hits, 9 er, 3bb/5k, 4 HRA. He's given up 4 er in his other 23 games. His line during those games: 1.03 era, 34.2 ip, 22 hits, 4 er, 9bb/40k. I'm sure you can do that with a lot of relievers though.

Travis Shaw has been awful this year, though he missed a month to injury.
In 203 PA, he is slashing .165/.276/.278 with 25bb/68k.
Since returning from injury: 49 PA, .171/.306/.268 with 8bb/18k.

He doesn't strike me as a guy who will age well at all but Kevin Youkilis didn't fall off until 32/33.

I think the Padres rushed Margot and he's never going to recover. Kind of a Wily Mo part deux.

Craig Kimbrel's second Cubs appearance comes in a blowout. He immediately surrenders a HR and a double off the top of the wall.

Chicago, meet non-save situation Kimbrel.

Edit: and now another HR (Josh Bell's third of the game, in fact).
