Well, all the "ditch Kyrie and go with the kids" crowd is going to be happy. Ainge and company can still do some things but given the cap situation as well as the attributes of the current Celtics roster, they are going to struggle mightily. Welcome to a likely 2020s version of the post-LeBron Miami Heat...

Kyrie is definitely gone, and the Celtics are the fourth (?) best team in the East pending Kawhi's decision.

I'd let Al walk and start over with Tatum and Brown, I guess. Huge disappointment, and one that jeopardizes Danny's entire vision.

I'm disappointed, as I thought AD was worth the risk of Tatum/Smart/Memphis pick.

I will say there is a non-zero chance Tatum and Brown are being undersold as assets after dealing with that bizarro Kyrie year. That's all we can hope for at this point.

I'd put the Pacers over the Celtics as well.

Welcome to the treadmill.

Well, shit.

I trust Danny didn't think it was worth the risk. Let's face it, he was dealing with two malcontents in a very complex situation. If this season didn't happen and we still had a gung-ho Kyrie looking to recruit help, it would be one thing, but he just had too many forces working against him.

The only possible answer is that Danny knows Kyrie won’t re-sign anyways and refused to include Tatum.

Potentially Celtics could have a lot of cap space next summer now if Horford either opts in or they let him walk, unfortunately with Davis seemingly off the table there isn't anyone I'd be exactly happy to see them sign to a max deal. 2021 is a much more appealing class if the Cs get there with max space.

Love Jaylen and Tatum. Get them another piece, add Rondo and let's go to work.

This trade, Durant's achilles, and Thompson's ACL make it likely the Celtics won't be holding the record for most NBA titles much longer.

The Boston Celtics refused to make Jayson Tatum available in trade talks with New Orleans, league sources say, putting the Lakers in prime position to strike the deal that teams Anthony Davis with LeBron James

I'm optimistic. I think Tatum at least is still going to be an All-Star. Things can change quickly and you see who else comes available in the next year while giving the young guys a real chance to shine and blossom with a coach playing to their strengths and best development instead of trying to keep Kyrie happy.

I don’t think any of us are happy as such, we’re relieved that Boston didn’t bet the future on a rental. There are a lot of ways to go from here.

I mean I know Kawhi’s great and all, but do you really expect him to deliver Toronto another 16 titles before hanging them up?

Nice get from Griffin in terms of value, though I wonder what they do with the Lonzo/Ingram/Jrue trio. None of those guys are even average 3pt shooters, and I doubt Zion will be either. Now maybe this is a tank year anyway, but long term those 4 cannot play together

I wanted AD, but as I said elsewhere--I was inclined to believe him when he said he was gone (and yes, Paul George stayed in OKC, whatever) so Danny rightly stayed firm.

Find another PG and let's go.

The rental thing was a concern but I think people vastly overrate the team's roster and what is actually available out there. I don't doubt that Ainge has a plan but with the cap, he is very limited room to maneuver. Unlike you, I don't see the "lots of ways to go from here" without lots of made-up fanfic, multi-team trades that may or may not be doable under the cap. I am not faulting Ainge for avoiding mortgaging the future but this was a big miss for Boston, period.

Credit to LeBron, Paul and the Lakers for using every advantage to get this done. In the end, they held all the cards

I'm guessing Jrue or Ball will be on the block. DAR too. It's unfortunate that Davis did not want to be a Celtic, but that has been clear ever since he demanded a trade.

At least now the draft and the Celtics' Summer league team will be much more interesting.

If the Lakers add Kemba or Kyrie, they're probably favored to win next year , right? Are Houston, Milwaukee, Philly, or Toronto/Clips (depending on where Kawahi goes) better?
So what your saying is that there's a lot still to happen?

Are the Lakers bigger favorites than the Warriors were this season?

Anthony Davis has never won a goddamn thing in his life. Lebron is old, and the organization is a tire fire. I'll take the field, all day long, over the Lakers.

Any word on the first round picks NO is getting besides #4 this year? Hopefully, they pushed them out several years. It would be nice to see them steal a couple lottery tickets from LA.

Yeah, I'm not so convinced about AD/LBJ/Kemba/Kuzma and 11 nobodies, I love AD but he is hurt every few weeks. LA couldn't afford to just wait for AD to hit free agency and waste another LeBron year, but they really emptied the cupboard here.

Pelicans got A LOT, arguably the 3 best young Lakers, 3 picks plus a bunch of swaps.

I don't love the fit, as mentioned in the other thread 4 of their likely starters next year vary from bad to trash at shooting 3s, but value was quite good.
Obviously the Lakers don't care today, but if somehow the Davis trade blows up and he walks after this year that's a crazy long time to not have control of your own 1st round pick

Two thoughts:

(1) there've been a couple of tweets indicating that AD intends to play out the year so he can sign as a FA rather than signing a long-term deal this off-season.
(2) I saw a tweet calling this an "extinction-level event" akin to the Nets trade for the Lakers, and I agree. This was a phenomenally bad trade for them unless their sole intention is to win one ring with LBJ and then go back to being terrible again. I have zero faith in AD as a guy who can hold up over the grind of a season, though I guess everyone will be subjecting their superstars to the Kawhi load management plan going forward, so we'll see.

It would depend on what they got in terms of vets taking discounts to get the LA and ring chasing double feature. I would worry about injuries though, really topheavy team with 1 guy who has had a history of injuries and one who has an insane amount of mileage

AD was the catch Danny was fishing for to complete the rebuild and he had the chips to get it done. Just sucks that for whatever reason he really did not want to come here. I’ll be happy to root for the young guys and watch their development but it definitely feels like the rebuild has failed. A championship isn’t coming for a while.

Laker's landing AD was predictable with Klutch/Bron firmly in control of the situation. I concur with DeJesus, credit to them.

Kyrie is probably happy with this result, it will give him one more reason to sh-t on the Celtic kids as he exits.

Danny has 20 other levers he can pull, I'm sure they have already formulated a game plan. I'll go against the grain and say they'll have a better record in 2020 then 2019 and contend for a title in 2021.

If the Heat Big 3 + nobodies could gel and win championships, then this lineup is a monster by comparison.

I do hope you're right though. Maybe we'll all look back at this moment and laugh when AD has a season-ending injury.
