Papi has been my hero since I was 6 years old. I was horrified when I got a text from a friend asking if I’d seen that he’d been shot but thank God he appears to be ok. Get well soon Papi you have a nation behind you

A through and through bullet wound from posterior to anterior that exited the abdomen and missed his spine and major organs/vessels is both wonderful and astonishing. So thankful this wasn't much worse. Get well Papi!

That seems very fortunate - I mean, as fortunate as you can be for being shot in the back at a bar.

I’m no doctor, but there’s a lot of important stuff in your torso between your back and your gut. Incredible nothing was hit.

“Please don’t let me die, I’m a good man” will now rival “This is our fucking city” for my favorite Papi quote.

The guy in the videos and photos may have been the driver and seeing some tweets that say the actual shooter was caught.

Translation: Eddy Vladimir Feliz García, arrested for the assault against David Ortiz, is 25 years old and has police records for drug matters. According to the preliminary data, it is the person who was driving the engine in which the gunman arrived at Ortiz. More details tomorrow in #lacosacomoes

Here he is getting a few bottles smashed over his head:

The account who posted that also has García as the driver.

This would be a strange turn of events. The next tweet says “second scum” with a police file photo of García, so one presumes the cop is the first:

Im glad the shooter survived the mob. I want to know in what world someone from the DR would want to hurt him and why. Like is there anyone more beloved by his/her home nation as much at Papi? I'm obviously saying that due to the circumstances and the sadness I'm feeling, but I couldn't come up with someone on his level. Even, as some have pointed out the possible gang connection, if it was for street cred, Papi has done so much for that country and brought its people so much joy I would hope even gang leaders would make him off limits.

I was living in Colorado when the marathon bombings happened, I have a friend who was hurt badly. I remember just watching the news in disbelief, dead inside, knowing that I've been in that spot, I could have been there that day. But Papi's just 30 second speech, which still makes me tear up even today, the "this jersey we wear today doesn't say Red Sox, it says Boston" and obviously "this is our FUCKING city" carry more weight than any other speech in my life. It was from the heart, it was real, and it made him transcend baseball. He wasn't talking as a player, a celebrity, wasn't worried about what people thought about the word he used, he was one of us. He is one of us and will always be and is the last person that deserved this shit. Get well big guy, you aren't done bringing us joy

Awful story.

That said, Marciano is likely right and we have few facts right now about the shooter, their motive or even if the guy pictured above/reported to be the gunman elsewhere was actually the person who pulled the trigger. From my end, all you can hope for is for Ortiz and the other victim to fully recover.

It is possible to be loved too much - you become a target. Papi should visit DR quietly, and frequently. But please let him move to Boston.

That is his city.

Just...trying to wrap my head around the idea that someone would put a hit on David Ortiz. What the hell.

The second victim is TV host Joel Lopéz. Also with them was rapper Secreto (El Bibieron). There is some chatter on the web that the hit was meant for him, but that could be sourced from wild speculation - people assuming the rapper must be involved somehow.

That video is chilling - if the shooter had any idea what he was doing Papi would be dead. The fact that he actually thought he might get away on the back of a scooter (or small motorbike) is even more reason to think this was an inexperienced punk with some kind of a score to settle or bones to make. If I had to guess (and this is a complete guess - completely speculative) this might be some low level dealer who Papi ran off his street or neighborhood ("get that shit outta here - this is a good place - we don't need scum like you around") who vowed to get him back, heard he was out at his local with a few friends and decided he was going to get brave. Now I'd say he better be ready to exit this planet.

No, you're right, I think all the random, almost entirely made up by people who are by no means experts in detective work, speculation is great for this thread and great for Papi. Please, carry on.

Back in real life, Im glad to see that he's stable. Lucky, blessed, whatever anyone wants to call it, I'm thankful right now. Stay strong Papi.

Wouldn't have helped him in this case. He never saw it coming. Too bad his body guards weren't on the job (Apparently).

Besides David doesn't strike me as a gun carrying type of guy. Let the pros handle security.
The pros really helped him in this situation. He’s got little kids, too.

Is Papi Batman now?

Prayers up for Ortiz. The man is a treasure, and a good human being. Hopefully he recovers quickly.

Just catching up on this. Holy cow. Miraculous that he didn’t die. And like everyone else here, I’m wondering why anyone would want David Ortiz dead. Even Yankee fans don’t want that. I’m just stunned. Praying for his swift and full recovery. And for a full accounting of justice. I can ask for that too, right?

Radio reporting they had to remove his gall bladder, some intestines, and he has a bit of liver damage
So reports of no organ damage were wrong? Can't say I'm surprised that in this "gotta be first" world of news reporting, the story keeps changing. As long as there's no change in the story that Papi will make a full recovery, the other details are irrelevant.

I want to see David up and about and back at Fenway before I worry about the perpetrators getting their just due.

As usual when something shocking happens, SoSH has been the best news source. Its good that folks here have been conservative and restrained in their posting.

Get well and stay safe, big man.

Not a lot of words for waking up to this today.

It’s not good, but it could have been so much worse, so (I guess) I’m grateful for small miracles.

Get well Papi.

Thank god he's in stable shape. I woke up to a notification about this on my phone and immediately feared the worst...so glad it seems he'll be OK. Also selfishly glad that I wasn't around last night when this was all a developing story.

If we should have learned one thing from the Marathon shooting, it's not to take social media's first report of who the shooter is or what they look like. Or their second. Or anything that's not official, really.

This makes more sense, it's really hard to get shot in the back and exit the abdomen without something being hit and damaged, there isn't a lot of just empty space in there. Despite what TV / Movies show us.

Sounds like a legit place he got to thankfully.

Fingers crossed we get more good news later today.

Any doctors around to explain how this will impact him going forward, if true? I'm sick.
Depends on the extent of the damage and what they actually had to do / and how much intestine they had to remove. Sounds like he got shot in the right back area and it exited in his RUQ area (based upon described injuries). All speculative based upon limited reports

Gallbladder - no big deal

Liver damage - very vague, liver tends to bleed moreso so if they got it controlled, likely minimal effects long term. If the liver had real concern, like it had been shattered, I think the statement would have been more forceful.

Small intestine - you have a lot of intestine. Depending on caliber of bullet and how it injured the bowel, they likely need to resect 10-20cm (this is not much overall). Depending on damage they may have done a diverting ileostomy (a stoma of the small intestine to keep gut stuff away from a healing bowel anastamosis) which are typically reversible once patient heals. Unless it hit his duodenum (top portion small intestine) and caused some pancreatic damage as well.

Not mentioned would be any damage to other things in the area, such as right kidney or if it got part of the lung / chest cavity (shot from standing at a downward angle).

Just woke up to this news. Thanks so much for the reports, especially the interpretations from the ER doc and others who understand what the medical announcements mean.
Ortiz is a special talent with the personality to back it up. I'm so happy he'll be well again.

I'm so very glad he is going to survive. The idea that David Ortiz may have to wear a ostomy bag or have some other sort of debilitation for the rest of his life is infuriating. I am hoping for a full recovery.

Thank you. Hoping for the best. We don’t know how recovery will go but sounds like he made out about as well as we could have hoped given how close the guy was.

The cradle of the game.
This whole thing is just unthinkable. I mean, how could anyone hate David that much? Feels a lot like the attempt on Pope John Paul’s life back in 1981.

A lot of times ostomies after GSW can be reversed. They can be temporary, as @opes points out. Post trauma it is to allow the area they put back together to heal properly. Last thing you want is that anastamosis breaking down and having GI contents leak into the belly that can make one extremely sick.
It is unlikely he would need one long term.

Again, this is purely something that COULD happen after GSW w bowel resection, as someone asked about injuries long term.
