On the bright side, Ja Morant means a Conley trade and some short term scuffling by the Grizz.
Conley would be a good acquisition for the Celtics if Kyrexit. He doesn't dominate the ball, and has been making other Grizzlies better for a decade.

They rather have a cost controlled Tatum and more draft picks to surround Zion.
This is the perfect opportunity for the Pelicans to reset, and build young around Zion.

What does AD do?
Suit up in green on opening night!

This night went from potential disaster to a nearly perfect outcome for the Celtics including the Memphis pick not conveying. Zion does nothing to make AD want to stay in NO if anything adding a 19-yr old would make it even less likely.

It gets you seven years of either Barrett or Calvert to go along with everything else the Lakers have.

A bigger issue is that the Knicks can bundle Knox, DSJ, #3, and future picks which might be the best package of all. Williamson/Knox/Barrett is a pretty good alignment at the 2/3/4.
I think it’s close. Pels in great position with Zion in the fold and 3 big markets all vying for AD with real assets.

There is a downside to LA not winning the lottery. Would’ve been fun to see Magic scramble to get his old job back.

You just made me sad for a second the Lakers didn’t get Zion. Helluva parlor trick, David.

In hindsight Lakers getting 2 would have been fun with Lonzo’s dad.

Crazy super team proposal: Kyrie and Durant decide to team up with AD. Pels dump their expirings, sign Durant, trade Jrue to Boston for a signed Kyrie. Pels now have an AD, Durant, Kyrie, Zion core to build around. Not likely, but it’s the best way for Durant and Kyrie to play together and be on a contender.

I mean an unprotected ‘21 New York first is by far the most valuable trade asset there is, and they can add more picks to that.

Zion should go back to Duke. This is gonna be Mike Trout in Anaheim. He’ll be a human highlight reel on a bad team that no one watches.
Why does everyone think New Orleans is a bad landing spot for Zion?

He had no chance to land in LA, and only the slimmest chance to end up in NY. Dallas would have been the best situation among the non-longshots, but New Orleans doesn’t strike me as markedly worse than the others, and it’s probably the second-best city in the mix, after Chicago.

I mean, he could have wound up in Cleveland or Memphis.

Depends on what they can do in FA. That pick could either be great or meh. The Memphis pick has far more certainty.

3 goals heading into tonight:

#1 - ensure Philly didn’t luck into Zion.
#2 - ensure the #1 pick team couldn’t/wouldn’t trade for AD.
#3 avoid Memphis conveying.

Amazing night. Ensures Tatum is the major asset only heading for AD and we keep Memphis pick for future assets.

But, the bad side is Memphis getting to #2 gets them Barrett who might not necessarily land with a bottom 6 record.

You guys seem surprisingly confident that NO will still trade AD. That seems odd. If anything this greatly enhances the possibility that he stays there.

Reports are already out that AD still wants to be traded. He’s gone.

How do you figure?

It’s not at all clear to me that the Pels would prefer Tatum to #3 if the MEM pick isn’t included as a sweetener.

If I were them I would rather have the #4 than Tatum and wouldn't even think about it.
My man. I love you, but you're crazy.

Draft picks are question Mark's. #4 picks even more so.

Tatum will be, at worst, a 3rd fiddle. Can easily settle as second best player behind Zion. And may still be his 1B to Zions 1A.

You take that and run.

He was upset with them already--and now Zion is gonna be marketed like crazy. He's gone.

Call me green colored glasses, but I think Tatum is a more worthwhile asset than the #3 pick this year. Tatum has already proven that he can play at an elite level in the NBA. RJ Barrett never has, and for all we talk, players in college doing well in the NBA is not a given. There were quite a few busts just in recent memory.

NOL also has to weigh all the talk of Kyrie and KD going to NY, as well - so future NY draft picks aren't terribly worthwhile (in my opinion). To me, Tatum + Memphis pick is worth much more than #3 this year and a future NY pick.

Yeah, this is easy for Pelicans. You got Zion. You now trade AD for another package of youth and build around Zion, AD trade haul, and 2020 pick. This couldn’t have gone any better for them.

Easier for the GM to pull the trigger on an AD trade with Zion in the fold. Zion is already more marketable as the star of a franchise than AD was and Zion hasn’t played a game yet.

Why? AD wants to be on a legit contender, not a bottom-half-of-the-playoffs Western Conference also-ran, which is what they would be if he stayed with Zion.
